Job Summary
Shift: 24hr Flex/Night Shift, 6:00pm-6:30am w/every other weekend
The Respiratory Therapist performs various technical duties to administer respiratory therapy treatments to assigned patients.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Clinical Manager, Respiratory Care and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Flex RT's will generally work 24 hours per week. However, based upon the hospital's patient care requirements as determined at the discretion of the flex RT's manager or designee, a flex RT may be required to flex her/his hours either up 12 hours or down 12 hours within a week.
Flex time RT's in a 24 hour position will receive health and dental benefits consistent with how regularly scheduled 36 hour RT's receive those benefits. Flex RT's will be paid each week based on how many hours worked and/or benefit time usage - although they are eligible to receive health and dental insurance benefits consistent with a 36-hour RT.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate degree or equivalent required
Respiratory Therapist license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required.
NRP from the American Academy of Pediatrics required within 3 months of hire or transfer into position.
Six months to one year of experience required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Set up, apply, and administer therapy as directed, using complete range of respiratory equipment. Control such factors as respiratory ratio, pressure, volume, percentage of oxygen and other gases, administer aerosol medications, continuously monitor patient's condition.
Perform pulmonary consultations and make recommendations for modes of therapy, frequency, medication, and duration as requested. Evaluate effectiveness of therapy by auscultation, laboratory tests, clinical observation, reporting significant changes to attending physicians and supervisors.
Perform basic bedside pulmonary testing. Perform advanced pulmonary function testing in the pulmonary function laboratory using highly technical and complex equipment to measure volumes, flows, diffusion rates, and metabolic oxygen requirements.
Perform techniques used in blood gas analysis. Oversee the training of all new personnel rotating through the Blood Gas Laboratory. Perform basic sleep studies.
Maintain required records, charts, etc. Record treatments given and as needed, prepare charges for submission to accounting. Assist in setting up and maintaining quality control standards and programs within the department.
Provide direction, assistance, and guidance to assigned personnel. Participate as an instructor in teaching basic respiratory therapy procedures and routines to other hospital staff who have occasion to handle respiratory equipment. Assist supervisory personnel in orientation and further training of new personnel.
Provide education to patients on disease processes, breathing, medications, and use of home respiratory therapy equipment when requested by physician or nursing.
Provide emergency assistance such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Assist in reconditioning and maintenance of routine therapy equipment. Maintain, calibrate, and repair highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, such as blood gas analyzers, computerized pulmonary function and gas analyzers.
Follow all organizational and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, environmental standards, and information management systems standards of use.
Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise and to fulfill all national and state CE requirements.

Provide education to patients, families and the general public to promote knowledge of disease process, therapies, self-help, cardiopulmonary wellness and disease prevention.
Initiates and maintains invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation according to physician order or protocol. Ensures patient - ventilator synchrony, maintains, monitors, measures and adjusts appropriately to assure proper function and to ascertain therapeutic effectiveness.
Administers pharmacologic, diagnostic and therapeutic agents related to respiratory care procedures necessary to implement treatment, disease prevention, pulmonary rehabilitation, or diagnostic regimen prescribed by a physician or protocol.
Assist physicians in patient assessment, response to therapies, and recommendations for changes in therapies.
Respond to all STAT situations involving Respiratory Care, requiring the need for airway management and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Maintains natural airways as well as the insertion and maintenance of artificial airways
Perform or assist with fiberoptic bronchoscopy, oximetry, VD/VT and O2 consumption, tracheobronchial suctioning, tracheostomy tube changes, intubations, bedside spirometry and EKG's, arterial puncture and analysis of blood using point of care.

Job Purpose
This position is responsible for delivering, setting up, and maintaining specialized respiratory and other equipment when necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide telehealth instruction to patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Provide onsite instruction to patients and/or caregivers as needed on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Provide virtual follow-ups for patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Perform on site follow-ups on patients when appropriate.
Prepare and maintain a record for each patient containing all pertinent information, care plans, physician prescriptions and follow-up documentation.
Consult with referring physician when appropriate regarding patient treatment, medical condition, and Plan of Care.
Participate in ongoing education and training sessions regarding respiratory patient care.
Interview and examine patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders as indicated by their individual care plan.
Monitor physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs as indicated.
Provide education to patients with oxygen, CPAP, BIPAP, and other respiratory equipment for complex respiratory diagnoses (excluding ventilators)

Suction
Perform testing and preventive maintenance on respiratory equipment in patients' residence.
Instruct patients, caregivers, physicians, and physicians' staff on the proper use of respiratory equipment and necessary cleaning requirements.
Serve as liaison between patient and other members of the health care team when required.
Consult with physicians to develop patient treatment plans.
Deliver/pick up equipment and/or supplies to patients' homes as necessary.
Contact physician and/or necessary health care team member regarding orders, complications and recommendations. Evaluate respiratory equipment for home use.
Participate in mandatory in-services and other trainings as scheduled.
Keep all financial and patient information confidential, in accordance with company mandate and HIPAA security standards.
Complete patient files and paperwork as per current policies.
Regular rotation for on-call services with expectation of answering any on-call within 15 minutes or less and responding physically to emergencies within the assigned service area as quickly as possible.
Basic Qualifications
21 years of age or older
Must be eligible to work in the United States and not require work authorization from us now or in the future
Valid US driver's license with no more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within the last 3 years
Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)-accredited respiratory therapy degree program with associate degree (AS, AAS) or a bachelor's degree (BS) and appropriate licensure.
Must be currently licensed and in good standing with the Licensure Board of Registration of the state of practice
Must possess RRT, RCP, CRTT credentials

The Respiratory Therapist performs various technical duties to administer respiratory therapy treatments to assigned patients.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Clinical Manager, Respiratory Care and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Flex RT's will generally work 24 hours per week. However, based upon the hospital's patient care requirements as determined at the discretion of the flex RT's manager or designee, a flex RT may be required to flex her/his hours either up 12 hours or down 12 hours within a week.
Flex time RT's in a 24 hour position will receive health and dental benefits consistent with how regularly scheduled 36 hour RT's receive those benefits. Flex RT's will be paid each week based on how many hours worked and/or benefit time usage - although they are eligible to receive health and dental insurance benefits consistent with a 36-hour RT.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Associate degree or equivalent required
* Respiratory Therapist license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required.
* NRP from the American Academy of Pediatrics required within 3 months of hire or transfer into position.
* Six months to one year of experience required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Set up, apply, and administer therapy as directed, using complete range of respiratory equipment. Control such factors as respiratory ratio, pressure, volume, percentage of oxygen and other gases, administer aerosol medications, continuously monitor patient's condition.
* Perform pulmonary consultations and make recommendations for modes of therapy, frequency, medication, and duration as requested. Evaluate effectiveness of therapy by auscultation, laboratory tests, clinical observation, reporting significant changes to attending physicians and supervisors.
* Perform basic bedside pulmonary testing. Perform advanced pulmonary function testing in the pulmonary function laboratory using highly technical and complex equipment to measure volumes, flows, diffusion rates, and metabolic oxygen requirements.
* Perform techniques used in blood gas analysis. Oversee the training of all new personnel rotating through the Blood Gas Laboratory. Perform basic sleep studies.
* Maintain required records, charts, etc. Record treatments given and as needed, prepare charges for submission to accounting. Assist in setting up and maintaining quality control standards and programs within the department.
* Provide direction, assistance, and guidance to assigned personnel. Participate as an instructor in teaching basic respiratory therapy procedures and routines to other hospital staff who have occasion to handle respiratory equipment. Assist supervisory personnel in orientation and further training of new personnel.
* Provide education to patients on disease processes, breathing, medications, and use of home respiratory therapy equipment when requested by physician or nursing.
* Provide emergency assistance such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
* Assist in reconditioning and maintenance of routine therapy equipment. Maintain, calibrate, and repair highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, such as blood gas analyzers, computerized pulmonary function and gas analyzers.
* Follow all organizational and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, environmental standards, and information management systems standards of use.
* Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise and to fulfill all national and state CE requirements.

Job Purpose
This position is responsible for delivering, setting up, and maintaining specialized respiratory and other equipment when necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide telehealth instruction to patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Provide onsite instruction to patients and/or caregivers as needed on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Provide virtual follow-ups for patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Perform on site follow-ups on patients when appropriate.
Prepare and maintain a record for each patient containing all pertinent information, care plans, physician prescriptions and follow-up documentation.
Consult with referring physician when appropriate regarding patient treatment, medical condition, and Plan of Care.
Participate in ongoing education and training sessions regarding respiratory patient care.
Interview and examine patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders as indicated by their individual care plan.
Monitor physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs as indicated.
Provide education to patients with oxygen, CPAP, BIPAP, and other respiratory equipment for complex respiratory diagnoses (excluding ventilators)
Perform and assist patients with the following equipment/therapy:
50 PSI Compressor
BiWaze Cough System
Luna G3 PAP and ResMed APAP
Luna 3B BPAP and ResMed BPAP
Mask Fitting
Oxygen Concentrators and Regulators
Pediatrics
ResMed ASV
ResMed Aircurve ST and Luna ST
ResMed ST-A (with iVAPs)
Suction
Perform testing and preventive maintenance on respiratory equipment in patients' residence.
Instruct patients, caregivers, physicians, and physicians' staff on the proper use of respiratory equipment and necessary cleaning requirements.
Serve as liaison between patient and other members of the health care team when required.
Consult with physicians to develop patient treatment plans.
Deliver/pick up equipment and/or supplies to patients' homes as necessary.
Contact physician and/or necessary health care team member regarding orders, complications and recommendations. Evaluate respiratory equipment for home use.
Participate in mandatory in-services and other trainings as scheduled.
Keep all financial and patient information confidential, in accordance with company mandate and HIPAA security standards.
Complete patient files and paperwork as per current policies.
Regular rotation for on-call services with expectation of answering any on-call within 15 minutes or less and responding physically to emergencies within the assigned service area as quickly as possible.
Basic Qualifications
21 years of age or older
Must be eligible to work in the United States and not require work authorization from us now or in the future
Valid US driver's license with no more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within the last 3 years
Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)-accredited respiratory therapy degree program with associate degree (AS, AAS) or a bachelor's degree (BS) and appropriate licensure.
Must be currently licensed and in good standing with the Licensure Board of Registration of the state of practice
Must possess RRT, RCP, CRTT credentials
Valid state (s) Respiratory Care license

Provides respiratory care according to established plan of care, including complex treatments, procedures and assessments requiring professional judgment and initiative, as well as routine respiratory therapy. Activities include such things as suctioning, administering prescribed medications during respiratory therapy, chest percussion, postural drainage, and incentive spirometry.
Schedule: 2 - 8 hour shifts and 1 twelve hour shift
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Provides clinical care in a manner consistent with patient focused care concepts.
Performs patient assessments using chart review, history, bedside spirometry, and clinical examination, using invasive or non invasive respiratory monitoring as indicated.
Demonstrates clinical problem solving by identifying/validating the problem, assisting with clinical pathway, and evaluating patient/family outcomes.
Uses appropriate respiratory and technical skills to deliver care to patients.
Monitors patients for any variance in the clinical component of the clinical pathway.
Routinely exercises sound judgment based on policies, procedures and accepted standards of care.
Applies clinical knowledge to complex patient care situations to resolve care issues, and establishes patient priorities for delivering care. Applies teaching and learning concepts to patients and families, evaluates patient and family progress, and initiates respiratory care education.

Qualifications
Educational / Minimum Requirements:
Completion of a two year AMA approved Associate or Bachelor's level program.
Minimum one year experience in respiratory care.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and Connecticut State License as Respiratory Care Practitioner.
BLS Certification at time of hire
ACLS/PALS within 6 months of hire.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Special Requirements:
Computer literacy and experience in entering and retrieving PC data. Must be available for call-in or other emergency duties.
Physical Requirements:
On feet for most of day with moderate lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, repetitive walking, stooping and bending throughout the work day.
Work Environment:
Regular exposure to a variety of patient elements including infectious and communicable diseases; occasional stress.
