* Provides referrals to other members of the school health team and outside resources in accordance with District guidelines and with appropriate consultations with parents and the licensed school nurse.
* Assists with vision, hearing and growth screenings following District and State guidelines as requested by the licensed school nurse or per parent/teacher request.
* Follows District and State protocols/procedures to ensure infection control practices are maintained.
* Follows communicable disease protocols/procedures including prevention, tracking and follow-up.
* Maintains accurate and complete health records for students and enters data in the Electronic Pupil Health Record.
* Participates as a member of the Site Emergency Response Team to prepare for and respond to emergency situations.
* Maintains student immunization records and practices according to Minnesota School Immunization Law and follows up with parents/guardians of students who are not in compliance.
* Maintains inventory of first aid supplies and equipment; re-orders supplies as needed.

Responsibilities
Responsible for all aspects of safety compliance for drivers
Provides behind the wheel and classroom instruction to district bus drivers and prospective bus drivers
Lead, design and implement initial and recurrent training programs for drivers, chaperones and crossing guards
Provides work direction to the district school bus driver trainers
Conducts a safety assembly for students in each elementary school. Trains and installs fifth grade school patrol members each fall.
Provides on going safety program for transportation employees, including the use of video, posters, workshops and individual employee conferences
Works with contractors in all aspects of their safety programs
Coordinates with school administration annual student safety assembly for each elementary school
Teaches state required course for beginning drivers which includes instruction in certification, vehicle components, first aide, emergency procedures, driving fundementals, defensive driving, discipline of student passenger, and community relations.
Investigates current and potential bus stop locations and makes recommendations based on safety and logistical considerations. Responds to parent requests regarding safety at bus stops
Takes proactive approach to school parking lot safety issues and collaborates with a diverse group of school administrators and drivers to effectively resolve school parking lot issues
Conducts accident investigations including interviewing parties involved, damage assessment, findings reports, observations and conclusions
Drives school bus routes when necessary

SUMMARY
Under general supervision, Licensed Practical Nurses provide basic public school nursing services in the examination and treatment of patients; as well as promote, maintain and restore good health at Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) facilities. Incumbents provide nursing care to students and participate in the health program for the general school population; including students with physically handicapping conditions. Additionally, incumbents administer medications to students by nebulizer, gastrostomy tube, or rectal valium; maintain current files of student emergency cards; assist with vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening of students; assist with daily routine care of students who have a physical handicap; and perform lab work to test blood sugar.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides nursing services within scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.
* Follows protocols, procedures and written care plans to administer medications and treatments; delivers first aid and episodic care under the delegation and guidance of the licensed school nurse.
* Utilizes physical assessment skills such as lung auscultation, monitoring of vital signs, and nursing observation skills to determine student health status and take appropriate action.
* Participates in plan-of-care for students with special or chronic health needs to include nursing care for medically fragile or technology dependent students.
* Provides ongoing observations and communication in regard to student's health condition and response to plan-of-care to the licensed school nurse, teacher and parent/guardian.
* Follows District and State protocols/procedures to ensure infection control practices are maintained.
* Follows communicable disease protocols/procedures including prevention, tracking and follow-up.
* Assists with vision, hearing and growth screenings following District and State guidelines as requested by the licensed school nurse or per parent/teacher request.
* Participates as a member of the Site Emergency Response Team to prepare for and respond to emergency situations.
* Maintains accurate and complete health records for students and enters data into the Electronic Pupil Health Record.
* Participates in special education time studies and appropriately logs IEP nursing services for reimbursement.
* Maintains inventory of first aid supplies and equipment; re-orders supplies as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program; AND two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment and school health clinic. Water Exercise Instructors motivate and teach students in water exercise courses according to current exercise standards and in accordance with the goals of the District 196 Community Education Aquatics Program.
Qualifications:
Water Exercise Instructors:
Must have the ability to relate to adults in a professional manner.
Must have strong leadership and public relations skills.
Must have sound decision-making skills.
Must have the ability to maintain self-control in stressful situations.
Are strongly recommended to have professional certifications in the area of exercise science (AEA, ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NDEITA, MEITA, and YMCA), CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications.
Responsibilities:
Water Exercise Instructors must:
Know, understand and follow all rules, policies and chain of command of the District 196 Community Education Aquatics Program.
Be responsible for safety of students.
Communicate with customers in a professional manner. Refer any unresolved issues to the Aquatic Coordinator.
Conduct classes in keeping with current exercise principles and in keeping with the needs of the participants.
Incorporate a variety of exercises and equipment in classes.
Arrive on deck 15 minutes prior to the start of the first class and have all necessary equipment ready before class.
Start and end classes on time.
Meet state health department requirements for being in the pool. If injuries or open wounds prevent entering the water a substitute will be necessary.
Notify the Aquatic Coordinator as to the reason for an absence and provide the name of the qualified staff person who will substitute.
Take ownership of substitute shifts. If unable to work once committed to a substitute shift, take responsibility to find another substitute.
Be responsible for maintenance and storage of equipment.
Maintain a professional appearance at all times. Swimsuits for females must be one piece and for males must be trunk style.
Have a full working knowledge of the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and assist when necessary.
Document all accidents and incidents immediately.
Notify the Aquatic Coordinator when a potentially serious problem is noticed.
Attend all instructor in-services. Notify the Aquatic Coordinator if unable to attend Make-up responsibilities must be completed in a timely fashion.
Provide the Aquatic Coordinator with Intent to Work information as requested.
Complete all required employment records, including time sheets, in an honest and timely manner.
Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Instructors are not permitted to recruit participants in the District 196 Community Education Aquatics Program for personal business purposes.
Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Water Exercise Instructors must be able to:
Observe all areas of the pool with clear vision.
Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.

Job Summary:
Support and promote a safe and healthy school environment
Assess, educate, refer and provide nursing care
Maintain positive collaborative relationships in the school community
Develop, implement and monitor Individual Health Plans (IHPs) and 504 Plans
Complete Health Assessment and Screening for Special Education Assessments
Collaborate with school, family and community agencies to support students with health conditions providing access to their education
Complete daily record keeping and medication administration via computer program
Support student education in self-management of health tasks
Delegate and train staff to support students in health tasks
Assist with the third party billing for qualified students
Provides health services to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning for students
Promote an optimal level of wellness of students and staff by providing preventive health services facilitating a healthy community
Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases
Abilities:
Collaborate with school personnel, students, family members and community agencies for student health support in school
Exercise professional judgment in making decisions

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, current Minnesota RN licensure, public health certificate
Licensed School Nurse (LSN) form Minnesota Department of Education/PELSB or ability to meet MDE requirements
Experience coordinating care for students with chronic health conditions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Three years of nursing experience preferred
Able to work independently in a fast-paced office
Understanding and knowledge of the following competencies:
Pediatric/adolescent nursing-child development
Public health/community health and mental health nursing
Crisis intervention and emergency management, including CPR certification
Infectious disease
Special Education services
Ability to perform skilled nursing care such as catheterization, suctioning, gastrostomy tube feedings, insulin administration and nebulizer treatments, etc.
Demonstrated experience and proficiency working with a culturally, ethnically, racially and socioeconomically diverse school community is preferred
