The successful candidate will act as a regular team member and occasionally as a project team leader (once properly trained) of product / process change activities and new product development projects that impact the Synthomer coatings business. Your primary responsibilities… Conduct laboratory work individually and as part of a team (coatings application team & overall Synthomer team including sales, technical service, production, product management and regulatory functions) that supports the objectives of the Synthomer coating business. Complete projects on time and deliver reports / presentations internally or externally as needed. Actively participate in customer interactions alongside sales and technical service staff as required. Collaboratively participate in teams tasked with implementing product / process changes and with the development of new products. Upon completion of training, there will be opportunities to lead innovation projects for regional or global market requirements. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Coatings Technology, or related field. Minimum 3 years' experience in Application / Technical Service with a background in the coatings industry. Prefer 5 or more years' related experience. Demonstrated experience with different types of coatings, the coating formulation process and the evaluation of coatings for a variety of applications. Capability of lab formulation including onsite formulation for different coating applications. Above average interpersonal skills, high-energy self-starter, collaborative team player and strong work ethic. Strong analytical skills, critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills. Solid written, oral and presentation communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision as part of a matrixed organization. Key Responsibilities Leads the development and delivery of new products and technologies from lab to production which meet all customer requirements. Coach and mentor colleagues on key scientific principles including experimental design Reviews lab records and advises on standard operating best practices and procedures. Writes clear and concise technology reports and updates. Engages colleagues on internal results for external communications and presentations to managers, as well as non-technical audiences such as customers. Proactively seeks opportunities to update stakeholders on projects and new technologies. Advocates for a safe, clean, uncluttered, work area at all times. Ensures all work is conducted in a safe and professional manner. Follows all safety principles and uses all required PPE in conducting work. Actively participates in the development of safety programs for the lab (Job Hazard Analysis, Audits, Waste Management.) Ensure all developed products meet analytical, application and functional performance as defined per customer requirements. Presents at approved meetings, seminars, and marketing opportunities. Practitioner level of knowledge in several key analytical techniques used in the development of products desired. Advances experience and a working knowledge of developing products which use or have special hazards or chemical incompatibilities (e.g. air sensitive, moisture sensitive, pyrophoric, high energy, toxic, high potency, etc.) desired Advanced experience working in glove boxes and under isolation schlenk conditions desired. Advocates for innovation and improvement at multiple levels. Location: Orrville, OH Work Arrangements: 50% onsite or more depending on business need In this role you will: * Develop robust processes for Uncrustables R&D, innovation, renovation, and technology initiatives. * Design, plan, coordinate and execute experiments from bench-top through manufacturing scale. Accountabilities can include creating test plans, commissioning and qualification plans, process flow diagrams, designing equipment and tooling, data analysis & interpretation, assessing process feasibility/capability, and scale-up risks/mitigations. * Lead a technical and cross-functional team to successfully commission & launch new innovation projects. * Lead technical team members to develop key tasks, timelines, and project plans for timely completion of goals. * Document technical findings and clearly articulate findings and recommendations through written and verbal summaries to the leadership team and cross-functionally. * Apply fundamental engineering principles in combination with a creative mindset & critical thinking to develop solutions. * Be a subject matter expert on R&D equipment design, operation, and troubleshooting. * Lead and support testing in PRL. * Identify and investigate new process technologies. * Identify and communicate process scale-up risks and mitigations. * Lead patent opportunities for technologies and processes. * Interface with equipment suppliers, service providers, manufacturing facilities and relevant business functions to achieve goals. * Drive decisions and recommendations based on data. * Provide coaching and function as a resource for junior engineers. * Become fluent and participate in JMS Key Element and Quality programs to support R&D. What we are looking for: Minimum Requirements: * Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Chemical/Mechanical/Food Engineering) * 5 + years experience in process development or operations technical support within CPG industry. * Able to function as a technical leader in process engineering in multifunctional teams. * Skilled in communicating difficult technical concepts and managing complex learning plans to convey technical information cross-functionally and to leadership. * Strong experience with process engineering and record of leveraging this experience to develop, qualify, and launch new process innovation and technologies. * Can plan and execute designed experiments (DOE) to generate relevant process data to identify and mitigate process and product risks. * Strong collaborative nature across functional teams to achieve shared goals. * Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously. * Experience with equipment and process troubleshooting. * Project management experience and strong personal leadership, able to work autonomously to plan, implement, monitor, and deliver objectives. * Proven success leading projects from benchtop to scale up and commercialization. * Ability to work a hybrid working schedule based on Company Core Weeks and business needs - with in office presence at or above 50% regularly; start times based on work needs may be before 8 AM (~25% of work days). * Approximately 20% travel; normally a minimum of 3-5 days consecutive per trip.
