This is a certified law enforcement position for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribal Police. It is essential for the University Police Officer to maintain high visibility on campus as a deterrent to crime. The employee is required to carry a firearm when on duty. The use of computers and various computer software may be necessary to complete many of the following tasks.
Essential Functions:
1. Patrol the University campus on foot, on bicycle or in a patrol car watching for activities that violate city ordinance, state statute, federal law or University policies. Intervene in illegal activity and restore order, investigate causative factors, determine and initiate the best course of action to resolve the problem(s). Make arrests when and where necessary.
Patrol campus streets, parking lots and driveways to ensure the proper flow of traffic and control parking on campus. Take appropriate enforcement action when illegally parked vehicles are located.
Check the security of all buildings on campus to ensure they are locked or unlocked as scheduled for each building and to ensure that buildings and contents are secure and all security measures are intact.
2. Following the established format for daily log reports and produce written reports detailing daily activities. Produce detailed offense reports of any crime reported on campus, supplemental investigative reports to record any information gathered as the result of an investigation, arrest reports for prosecution, and affidavits for charges as required by the state and District Attorney. Produce accident reports detailing accident investigations as required by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Produce information reports for any other activities on campus.
3. Establish professional contact with the University community: Provide directions to buildings, events, and classes. Unlock vehicles for vehicle owners who have locked their keys inside. Escort students who have concerns for their safety to campus locations. Jumpstart vehicles that will not start. Unlock buildings and classroom doors for students and faculty who are authorized to be inside. Present safety talks to groups and organizations as requested.
4. Attend in-service training to update knowledge and skill in police procedure, firearms proficiency, first aid, CPR, AED and legal issues, and remain in compliance with the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training requirement for no less than 40 hours of in-service training each year.
5. Attend briefings with the supervisor(s) to receive instructions, daily briefing information, legal updates, schedule changes, performance evaluations, and general work-related information.

Nature of Work:
Provides law enforcement and public safety services to the community, to include enforcement of criminal statutes and ordinances, making arrests as required, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, patrol activity, accident investigation, resolution of domestic and other disturbances, prosecution support, and non-criminal public safety services. An individual holding the position of police officer shall be responsible for the efficient performance of required duties in conformance with the Department rules, regulations and policies.
Entry-level officers shall generally be assigned as uniformed Patrol officers. A police officer is expected to perform duties with a high degree of independence and proper judgment. An officer must exercise authority consistent with the obligations in the International Association of Chiefs of Police Code of Ethics. They must remain accountable to superior officers and promptly obey legitimate orders. Officers holding the position of officer may also be required to carry out the duties and responsibilities of any of the following assignments with the agency:

JOB SUMMARY:
This is a full-time non-exempt position. Performs assigned duties to assure efficient and lawful operation of the Detention Center.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
The officers will process incoming and outgoing prisoners.
The officers will transport inmates to court, medical appointments, and other law enforcement facilities. Transport will be on foot, by auto or if necessary, by ambulance. The officers are also responsible for moving inmates to other assigned areas to meet with attorneys, law enforcement officers, and for religious services or Alcoholics Anonymous groups. Officers are responsible for applying appropriate restraints during transport and for maintaining proper supervision.
The officers will allow prisoners access to the telephone at specified times to make out-going calls. Prisoners will be allowed access to the Centers library including requested legal materials. This includes accepting written requests for legal assistance and delivering to the Clerk for distribution to attorneys.
Maintain a daily log of all activities within the Center including visits by the public, relatives of inmates, attorneys and Court Services personnel.
Maintain the safety of the staff and the residents of the facility. All incoming property will be searched for the presence of weapons and contraband. Inspect cells as necessary to search for weapons and contraband.
Supervise all inmate visitations from professionals or authorized visitors and conduct searches and log all incoming property intended for prisoners.
Contact medical personnel as needed following observation of prisoner health complaints. EMTs or an ambulance may be summoned for emergency situations. Appointments will be made for non-emergency situations. Assure proper medication for prisoner prescribed medications, disperse as directed and keep a log.
Distribute prisoner requested writing material and stamp according to policy. Pick up outgoing mail and deliver to the Clerk for mailing or pickup.
Maintain cleanliness and order in the facility. Collect trash following meals. Wash laundry from the facility and inmates personal laundry. Disperse personal hygiene items to the prisoners.
Maintain personal knowledge of all inmates and assure that they are accounted for and in their proper location.
Advise the Food Supervisor of the prisoner count and serve three meals each day. Note any special dietary needs of any prisoner.
Act as Deputy Clerk for the District Court by completing bond forms. Serve warrants as needed on prisoners in court or at the Center. Assist Deputies, Dispatchers and Juvenile Attenders with the fulfillment of their duties.
All other duties as assigned by the Sheriff.
INTERMITTENT DUTIES:
May be required to attend training sessions or seminars. Will be required to be attend Defensive tactics training and certifications in a minimum of two less lethal uses of force.
May be assigned additional duties on a temporary or emergency basis.
May be assigned as a shift leader.
May be required to participate for 2-3 years in the WorkWellKS training seminars and the Lyon County, Kansas Wellness Team roles as: Convener, Facilitator, Secretary, Communications/Promotion, Liaison to the Executive, Meaningful Employee Engager, Event Planner, Benefits Liaison, Data Liaison, and/or Facilities.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

These positions provide law enforcement and public safety services to the community to include enforcement of criminal statutes and ordinances, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, patrol activity, accident investigation, resolution of domestic and other disturbances, prosecution support, and non-criminal public safety services. These positions require good communication skills & passing of various law enforcement tests. Patrol schedule included 8-hour shifts on a rotating basis.

Beacon for Hope's Suicide in the Heartland: Stronger than the Storm is dedicated to saving lives through education, resources, support, and hope for those affected by suicide. The Suicide Prevention Community Engagement VISTA will work in the creation of innovative and engaging events and community outreach focused on at-risk populations. Utilization of current suicide prevention data and community factions will be used to create growth opportunities in areas of need where access to mental health resources are scarce or non-existent. The VISTA will develop resources that target specific, unique communities in 8 rural counties in Kansas. Member Duties : Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention is dedicated to ensure individuals of income eligible areas of Kansas receive suicide prevention, education, resources, and materials to help reduce the suicide rate. The Suicide Prevention Community Engagement VISTA will work directly with Beacon for Hope staff to create innovative events and outreach opportunities that target veterans and their families. The VISTA will collaborate with community factions, donors, key community leadership, and other VISTAs to create life-saving events focused on providing resources, education, and materials. Participation in community outreach events as well as community organized events to reach members of communities at risk is required. Ensuring all events and outreach activities are directly linked to Beacon for Hope's mission of connecting the community through education, resources, support, and hope is a vital piece of our project to ensure we reach at risk individuals in unique ways.

Police Officer Experience and Education
You must meet the minimum qualifications to be considered for the position:
U.S. Citizen
21 years of age by first day of Police Academy
High School diploma or GED

Desired qualifications: Prior law enforcement experience, college courses in criminal justice, and/or military experience.
Police Officer starting pay
Police Recruit (while attending 16-week Police Academy) - $60,150
Police Officer (successful completion of the Academy) - $66,013
Master Police Officer salary range
Top-out rate of pay is $101,853 annually after 10 years of completed service.
Lateral Police officer salary range
Lateral transfer police officers can receive all or partial credit for their previous years of service. The pay rate will be established based on comparable wages with the Lenexa Police Officers of the same tenure. Depending on qualifications, a lateral transfer's range of pay is $66,013 - $101,853.
The Lenexa Police Department accepts certified police officers from other cities, counties, and states through our lateral officer hire program. We define lateral officers as those who are currently certified as police officers in their jurisdiction. The certification must meet the training standards set forth by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). If accepted and hired, you will directly enter LPD's Field Training Program and can forego a Kansas Police Academy. If certified through another state, may be required to attend a 2-week reciprocity academy.
This position is also eligible to receive the following:
$1,300 annual ~ $50.00 per pay period secondary language stipend for those who pass a City of Lenexa proctored oral speaking proficiency test.
Shift differential - Evening shift $1.00 per hour and Night shift $1.50 per hour.
Tuition reimbursement $4,500 annual; $25,000 total lifetime reimbursement

Qualified applicants must be able to pass a written aptitude test, oral board interview, polygraph, a physical fitness test, an extensive background investigation, pre-employment drug screen and physical exams, and a psychological evaluation.

The City of Leawood offers career development opportunities in which the employee could increase their experience, training, and pay. The position is eligible to receive merit-based pay increases every year. Employees also receive a Time in Service Bonus every three years of employment on their anniversary date equal to 5% of their annual salary.
Certified police officer applicants
hired within one year from graduation of a reciprocity eligible academy may qualify for academy tuition reimbursement up to $7000. Qualifying applicants must not have been previously sponsored or otherwise employed or compensated as an employee of any local, state or federal law enforcement agency. Eligible recipients must remain a member of the department in good standing and will receive up to $3000 upon the successful completion of the Leawood Police Training Program, up to another $2000 upon the completion of the employee's introductory period of twelve (12) months from the date of hire, and up to another $2000 at the end of two (2) years of service as a Leawood Police Officer. Tuition expenses previously covered by awarded grants or scholarships are not eligible for reimbursement.
Summary of the Position: Police Officer provides law enforcement and public safety services to the community to include the enforcement of state and local laws, statutes and ordinances, criminal and crash investigation, crime prevention, and traffic enforcement. Areas of assignment include patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, DARE/SRO and administration.
General Overview of Responsibilities:
Responsible for the enforcement of federal, state and local laws, including traffic ordinances.
Assists in the investigation of crimes using state and federal established practices, procedures and techniques.
Assists the police department in educating the public on the City's Code, ordinances and state statutes.
Protects the lives and property of Leawood residents by participating in preventive, proactive patrol by vehicle, bicycle and on foot, including surveillance of high crime/incident areas, after-hours patrol of businesses, and house watches.
Investigates vehicular crashes including directing traffic at crashes, coordinating removal of disabled vehicles and dispatching emergency medical personnel if applicable.
Administers first aid and emergency medical care to individuals requiring medical assistance when needed until emergency medical personnel arrive on scene.
Assists in the investigation of missing persons, civil matters and noise disturbances.
Retrieves pertinent information from emergency and non-emergency calls.
Responsible for the proper care and use of assigned patrol vehicle, department equipment and weaponry.
Participates in community outreach initiatives and programs sponsored or facilitated by the police department.
Performs non-criminal public safety services to the community.
Minimum Requirements: Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Must successfully obtain and retain certification as a Kansas Law Enforcement Officer. Must successfully complete a Leawood Police Department Officer Training Program. Must maintain an acceptable discipline, accident, and safety record. Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record per the City's drivers
