University Police Communications and Security Specialists provide communications, security, and public safety services within a 24/7 operation in the University Police Departments at the campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY). Their primary responsibility is to function as the initial point of contact between the police and the public, performing dispatching activities, and using various databases, online systems, and multiple video sources. The positions are classified only at SUNY campuses and are subject to the Security Guard Act of 1993. Incumbents must obtain a Security Guard Photo ID from the New York State Department of State within 90 days of appointment. Illustrative Tasks Functions under the direction of the University Police Department shift supervisor, typically a University Police Officer 2, or University Police Communications and Security Specialist 2. Incumbents are given directions regarding assignments, briefing on current problems at the beginning of the shift, and instruction in job-related law enforcement techniques. Controls base, fixed or mobile communication systems: * Maintains status and control over all mobile radio units in service. * Monitors all equipment in the dispatch area and reports all departures from required procedures to the appropriate supervisor. * Reports emergency situations to supervisory personnel, including the inability to establish communications with a mobile unit. Physical Security Officer I:
Provides superior service to members, employees, and guests creating a welcoming environment and personalized interactions while paying attention to behaviors, recognizable features, and potentially suspicious notes through situational awareness.
Monitors security cameras, alarm systems, and access control systems to detect and respond to threats, unauthorized access, or security incidents.
Responds to alarms, security concerns, and requests for assistance, taking appropriate action, including coordination with law enforcement or emergency responders as needed.
Maintains and enforces access control procedures, including verifying visitor credentials, issuing badges, and regulating building entry, including denying access and escorting those off premises when appropriate.
Provides a first level of emergency response by providing clear direction to employees and communicating directly with all necessary parties for organizational awareness and reaction.
Conducts daily security rounds and inspections to ensure compliance with security policies, identify potential risks, and communicate vulnerabilities or maintenance concerns.
Assists employees, guests, and visitors with security procedures and building access.
Documents and maintains detailed records of security incidents, visitor access, and suspicious activity.
Ensures adherence to organizational security policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Understand the Credit Union's policies and procedures to ensure compliance and accountability for managing operational risks. Adhere to established internal controls and procedures to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and maintain the integrity of credit union operations.
Perform other duties as assigned
Physical Security Officer II:
Assists with the training of current and new Physical Security employees.
Provides enhanced visitor management through executing hotel guest suite and event procedures.
Assists with investigations of security concerns and workplace incidents, providing detailed reports and recommendations to management.
Provides initial investigation into incidents to clearly and efficiently escalate as appropriate
Senior Physical Security Officer:
Leads investigations of security concerns and workplace incidents, reviewing reports, directing peers through the process, and recommendations to management.
Acts as the Credit Union's incident command in emergency response situations in the absence of management.
Leads incident debriefings when involved as a key contributor to the investigation or action.
Oversees and reviews peer documentation and reporting, ensuring all security logs, incident reports, and compliance records are accurate and up to date.
Deploys to branches and other locations as needed to provide security presence and support.
Trains, mentors, and provides support to other Physical Security Officers serving as a resource for escalated critical decisions and emergency situations. Communicating to management as needed.
Job Requirements:
Physical Security Officer I:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Prior experience in law enforcement, military, security, or similar
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required or ability to obtain
Physical Security Officer II:
Completion of one or more formalized trainings in security/first responder with certification of completion. (i.e. Physical Security Certification, Fire Safety Training, etc.)
Senior Physical Security Officer:
Security Guard Licenses or Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice required; -or 3 years of experience in security roles in lieu

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period.
Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment, and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.

Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery, active violence. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; Frequently moves equipment or materials for transport between areas of buildings.
This position requires onsite presence at the employee's assigned location for all scheduled shifts.

Responsibilities
Provide any needed assistance to customers, team members and visitors
Perform security patrols by foot and/or by company vehicle
The protection of individuals and their property while controlling access to the premises
Neutralize situations calmly with tact and common sense

Qualifications
Must Have Qualifications:
High School Diploma
Meet physical needs of the job
Meet all legal requirements to be able to work in the United States
Must demonstrate good moral fitness and ethical standards

Must be detailed oriented and have satisfactory literacy and writing, documentation, communications and interpersonal abilities
Have no disqualifying criminal history or convictions

Meet minimum requirements set by insurer to drive a company vehicle:
No moving traffic violations in the past 3 years
No at fault accidents in the past 5 years
Have not had driver's license denied, suspended or revoked in the last 3 years
No driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUI) convictions in the past 5 years
Ability to work a 1pm-10pm shift
Monday through Friday hours, however, may be required to work nights, days, holidays and weekends
