The Sorter is responsible for safely and efficiently processing incoming recyclable materials so that outbound commodities are acceptable for sale to various brokers or mills. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Sort and segregate recoverable materials (e.g., aluminum, plastic, glass, paper, etc.) from incoming waste. Deposit recoverable materials safely and efficiently into appropriate chute. Assist other sorters on an as-needed basis with heavy or bulky items. The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department, Environmental Resources Division, is seeking a municipal solid waste Sorter who is responsible for identifying, separating, and sorting residential and commercial recyclable, reusable, and non-recyclable materials from incoming solid waste streams. Typical duties include inspecting waste on sorting lines, removing contaminants, placing materials into designated bins or conveyor areas, and ensuring proper handling and disposal of hazardous or prohibited items. The role also involves maintaining a clean and safe work area, operating basic equipment as assigned, and following safety procedures and facility guidelines to support efficient waste-processing operations. Job Description The Sorter oversees the daily operations of the sorting line, ensuring that recyclable materials are accurately identified and separated according to type. The Sorter will primarily sort paper, plastic, and cardboard while maintaining safety and quality standards within the facility at all times. This role will need to work a 9:00am-6:00pm schedule Monday through Friday. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Accurately identify and differentiate various materials brought into the facility Manually sort materials according to type (e.g., paper, plastics, cardboard) to ensure proper recycling streams Review materials for foreign or non-recyclable items and remove them to prevent contamination Take boxes of materials and dump them into designated bins for processing Assist in the movement and organization of materials within the facility as needed Ensure a safe work area by utilizing appropriate safety equipment, including safety vests, gloves, protective eyewear, and steel-toe boots Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a hazard-free work environment Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth operations and address any issues promptly Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to supervisors Perform other tasks or duties as assigned, which may include but are not limited to cleaning and maintaining work areas, palletizing materials for shipment or storage, loading and unloading trucks, assisting drivers as a helper during collection routes.
