Job Summary:
Our organized, meticulous and safety-focused Sterile Processing Technician for our Surgical team to help demonstrate patient care second to none! The Sterile Processing Technician focuses on the proper care and maintenance for all surgical instrumentation, decontamination processes, equipment usage and sterilization processes. The Sterile Processing Technician role is an integral part of the surgical team with an emphasis on infection control. Preferred candidates are able to excel under pressure and in situations that demand patience, tact, stamina and endurance while focusing on minute details.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
* Coordinate surgical instruments and supplies for surgery. Serves as contact person for Operating Room personnel in need of instruments and supplies. Develop strong knowledge of core specialty with secondary experience in other cores.
* Functions as resource in the department and coordinates the trial, purchase and building of new and/or revised instrument sets, responsible for consignment/loaner tray build.
* Performs a variety of Central Processing Department (CPD) Technician service duties such as, but not limited to: washing, (re)assembling and (re)wrapping instruments, equipment and supplies for sterilization; operating sterilizing equipment; dispensing various supplies and equipment; dispensing various supplies and equipment upon request; maintaining inventories; confirming that patient charges/credits are processed correctly; basic computer data input to send messages, work orders, etc.

* Demonstrate effective and thorough communication with CPD Staff, Operating Room (OR) suites, and OR/CPD management.
* Functions as resource in the department and provides coverage to all service lines in times of need and as assigned by supervisor.
* Function as point of contact for assigned service lines, and is the CPD to OR Liaison for all issues related to the CPD. Maintains service line on-hand carts located in OR Cores.
* Participate in projects that improve work efficiency.
* Assists surgeons, RNs, and Surgical Technicians to provide correct instrumentation and equipment for quality patient care.
* Wash, reassemble and rewrap used instruments, instrument sets, supplies and equipment for sterilization. - Reprocess outdated and appropriate contaminated items.
* Operate steam sterilizers and other processing equipment.
* Mark packages to be sterilized with expiration dates.
* Ensure all processed and stored supplies conform to required sanitary/sterile conditions.
* Returns damaged contaminated items for processing.
* Assist with ordering and storage of supplies.

* High School Diploma or equivalent required. Certificate attained through successful completion of a sterile processing program at an accredited institution is preferred.

* Must have in-depth knowledge and experience of surgical instrumentation and be able to properly identify many types of instrumentation and able to proficiently assemble instrument sets with speed and accuracy.
* Must understand and speak English sufficient to read, write and follow oral and/or written instructions. - Must be able to write legibly and spell with accuracy.

Under the direct supervision of the Director, Surgical Services and the Supervisor, Sterile Prep, the Certified Sterile Prep Technician processes all materials that can be reprocessed, including instrument sets, trays, equipment, and specialty items to include decontamination, assembly, packaging and terminal sterilization. Assembles surgical case carts and equipment according to departmental policies and procedures.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
DECONTAMINATION:
Separates instruments from other articles for purposes of washing and decontamination and notifies supervisor of any missing items and reports any malfunctions.
Disassembles, cleans, and decontaminates general, specialty and loaner instrumentation.
Follows manufacturers recommendations when indicated.
Assembles instruments, sets, and peel-pouched items. Prepares special items upon request. Must be able to communicate both inter and intra departmentally.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in performing biological testing of steam autoclaves and sterrad units.
Decontaminates patient care equipment from the nursing units.
Adheres to universal precautions and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
Receives and inspects instruments from the decontamination area and follows established procedures for deletion and repair.
STERILIZATION:
Responsible for loading of all baskets for both ultrasonic cleaners, washer-sterilizers, carriages for plasma sterilizer, and cart washer according to procedures.
Maintains environmental cleanliness and order in general as well as specific work areas.
Prepares documentation for autoclave, plasma bacteriological culture, tray sets, and peel patches.
TRAY SET/ ASSEMBLY
Assembles instruments, sets, and packs according to specifications in departmental catalogue.
Assembles surgical case carts with an accuracy of 90 percent.
Conscientiously performs all functions related to materials processing, which is packaging, loading of machinery, sterilizing, aerating, and handling.
Required to perform other job functions in processing areas as assigned/directed by supervisor.
STERILE STORAGE/SUPPLY:
Responsible for receipt of all reprocessable materials by way of manual delivery according to established procedures and safety regulations.
Responsible for immediate reporting of malfunctioning of any stationary equipment.
Assesses the needs in sterile storage area and maintains inventory levels as designated.
Prepares and maintains inventory of miscellaneous supply items required by Surgical Services.
Identifies outdated equipment and follows procedures for reprocessing.

Certified Sterile Processing Technician - 20 Hours - Afternoon Shift
Sterile processing technician job in Grand Blanc, MI
* Henry Ford Health Genesys Hospital - Grand Blanc * 3:00pm - 11:30pm * Rotating weekends every third week Coordinate surgical instruments and supplies for surgery. Serves as contact person for Operating Room personnel in need of instruments and supplies. Develop strong knowledge of core specialty with secondary experience in other cores. Functions as resource in the department and coordinates the trial, purchase and building of new and/or revised instrument sets, responsible for consignment/loaner tray build. Performs a variety of Central Processing Department (CPD) Technician service duties such as, but not limited to: washing, (re)assembling and (re)wrapping instruments, equipment and supplies for sterilization; operating sterilizing equipment; dispensing various supplies and equipment; dispensing various supplies and equipment upon request; maintaining inventories; confirming that patient charges/credits are processed correctly; basic computer data input to send messages, work orders, etc. Prioritizes workflow effectively, responding to routine and emergency user requests. Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe facility. Performs other related duties as requested by authorized personnel. - Double checks for complete case carts and that appropriate loaner trays are on correct case carts. Ensures that the first scheduled case of the day goes on-time from CPD responsibility end, and will be held responsible for any case not starting on time. - Demonstrate effective and thorough communication with CPD Staff, Operating Room (OR) suites, and OR/CPD management. Functions as resource in the department and provides coverage to all service lines in times of need and as assigned by supervisor. - Function as point of contact for assigned service lines, and is the CPD to OR Liaison for all issues related to the CPD. Maintains service line on-hand carts located in OR Cores. - Participate in projects that improve work efficiency. Assists surgeons, RNs, and Surgical Technicians to provide correct instrumentation and equipment for quality patient care. - Wash, reassemble and rewrap used instruments, instrument sets, supplies and equipment for sterilization. - Reprocess outdated and appropriate contaminated items. - Operate steam sterilizers and other processing equipment. - Mark packages to be sterilized with expiration dates. - Ensure all processed and stored supplies conform to required sanitary/sterile conditions. In lieu of the CRCST, a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) will be acceptable.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REUIRED:
* High School Diploma or equivalent required. Certificate attained through successful completion of a sterile processing program at an accredited institution is preferred.
* Two years relevant experience preferred.
* Must have in-depth knowledge and experience of surgical instrumentation and be able to properly identify many types of instrumentation and able to proficiently assemble instrument sets with speed and accuracy.
* Must understand and speak English sufficient to read, write and follow oral and/or written instructions. - Must be able to write legibly and spell with accuracy.
* Must possess and demonstrate discretion in dealing with confidential information and the communication skills, initiative, tact, diplomacy and dependability to perform all duties of the position; must be capable of functioning in a fast paced, stressful environment.
