Sterilization technicians ensure that instruments and operatories are properly sterilized and set up for dental procedures. They process instruments, monitor sterilizers and assist with turning over and setting up treatment rooms; some also help expose digital images, escort patients and record exam notes. General duties include turning on and maintaining equipment, disinfecting operatories, restocking supplies and assisting the front office. Responsibilities Include Decontaminating, packaging and sterilizing instruments using appropriate protocols and monitoring biological and chemical indicators. Setting up and turning over operatories between patients, ensuring that all surfaces are disinfected and properly stocked. Maintaining sterilization equipment, performing routine tests (e.g., autoclave spore testing) and documenting results. Ordering and organizing dental supplies; assisting with inventory control and equipment maintenance. Escorting patients, taking digital radiographs (if state allows) or assisting the dentist with charting. Supporting the front office by restocking forms and supplies and maintaining a clean, safe work environment. Ideal Qualifications High‑school diploma or equivalent with experience in dental or healthcare sterilization preferred. Knowledge of instrument processing, infection‑control protocols and safety procedures. Ability to operate and maintain sterilization equipment and to follow written protocols precisely. Disassembles and decontaminates all instruments, procedure trays, and equipment returned from the nursing units following departmental policies Assembles all instruments and procedure trays following and completing appropriate count sheets Processes all items appropriately using either sterrad or steam sterilization & properly loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers & documents load contents per hospital policies Completes required biological, chemical and Bowie Dick testing and documents results accordingly Reports any discrepancies in testing & potential equipment and/or instrument problems to Central Management immediately Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition & prepares case cart request generated by the Operating RoomProperly stores all sterile supplies housed in the department & properly dispenses equipment and supplies requested by the nursing units Demonstrates proper use of PPE Personal Protective Equipment and Standard Precautions, proper record keeping, performance testing, cleaning and disinfecting, drying, transportation and storage of all endoscopes.
