Job Description
This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program. The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below:
International SOS is looking for an individual who is an experience Sterile Processing Technician to provide services for VA members and their families. A Medical Supply Technician is responsible for managing and maintaining the inventory of medical supplies and equipment in healthcare settings, ensuring that items are properly sterilized, organized, and readily available for use by medical staff. They play a critical role in supporting patient care by making certain that the necessary supplies are available and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
The primary purpose of the Sterile Processing Technician (SPS -Sterile Processing Service) is to provide the operating room, dental service, interventional procedural areas, various clinics, wards, departments, CBOCS and other hospital facilities with sterilized and/or high level disinfected (HLD) critical and semi critical reusable medical equipment (RME) such as surgical instruments, instrument sets and flexible endoscopes. Reprocesses (disassembles, cleans, decontaminates, assembles, HLD or sterilized) critical, semi-critical and a few non-critical RME in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, Joint Commission (JC) standards, VHA directive 1116, VA handbooks, Center for Disease Control (CDC), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AMMI), International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) and local SPS policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Perform aseptic principles and techniques, including characteristics of various types of detergents, cleaning techniques, sterilizing mediums; and tests to determine effectiveness of sterilization.
Use, operation, maintenance, assembly, and disassembly of complex surgical instruments, and reusable medical equipment and the specific cleaning, sterilizing and storage requirements of each to ensure RME is sterilized and stored according to manufacturer's specifications.
Interpret written material, technical material, regulations, instructions, and report.
Decontamination Area
Transport contaminated reusable medical equipment (RME) from point of use biohazard areas to Decontamination area of Sterile Processing Service. Sort and decontaminate RME based on manufacturer's instructions and facility standard operating procedures, utilizing correct dosage of chemicals.
Wear proper protective apparel and equipment.
Disassemble and position all parts of RME to ensure removal of bioburden.
Manually and mechanically clean.
Remove bioburden/contamination by soaking, manually wiping or using appropriate scrubbing brush for added cleaning.
Place RME in automatic RME cleaning machines as recommended by the SOP and manufactures instructions.
Remove instrument stains using appropriate chemicals.
Disinfect all critical, semi-critical and non-critical RME.
Perform all functions of the decontamination process including but not limited to manual and mechanical cleaning of surgical, reusable medical equipment, and dental instrumentation.
Transport contaminated reusable medical equipment (RME) from point of use biohazard areas to Decontamination area of Sterile Processing Service. Sort and decontaminate RME based on manufacturer's instructions and facility standard operating procedures, utilizing correct dosage of chemicals.
Follow Manufacturer's Instructions/Instructions for Use (IFU) and safely operate and trouble shoot decontamination equipment including but not limited to washer/disinfectors, cart Washer, Dental handpiece maintenance system, ultrasonic cleaners, automated endoscopic reprocessors and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents.
Conduct visual inspections of all RME items to ensure cleanliness prior to being sending to SPS preparation area for processing.
Perform all the functions for the reprocessing of flexible endoscopes to include the operating of an endoscope preprocessor according to manufacturer's instructions.
Accomplish the inspection, assembly, packaging, and terminal sterilization or HLD) of all RME and flexible endoscopes throughout the medical facility and CBOCs.
Read, understand, and follow all manufacturers' instructions on cleaning RME and department established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets.
Perform and document quality assurance checks for reprocessing equipment as well as RME.
Preparation Area
Perform all functions of the prep/packaging and sterilization process including documentation and quality assurance procedures.
Examine and visually inspect instrumentation and appropriate functioning, and cleanliness.
Assemble instrument sets according to count sheets. Place sets in appropriate outer container or wrap sizes.
Inspect assemble, package, and document the contents of a wide variety of surgical and dental trays and instruments according to count sheet.
Inspects, prepares, assembles, and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, low temperature gas plasma sterilizer (Sterrad), Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AER) and manual high-level disinfecting procedures.
Properly and safely load, operate and trouble shoot a variety of sterilizers including but not limited to steam, low temperature gas plasma sterilizer (Sterrad), Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AER). Additionally, perform all quality assurance testing and documentation required for each sterilizer in accordance with facility requirements.
Store and/or deliver to end user in accordance with facility protocols.
Always wear proper protective apparel and equipment.
High Level Disinfection Area (HLD)
Always wear proper protective apparel and equipment.
Properly transports all items for HLD process before and after processing in accordance with facility protocols.
Inspect items for HLD process, and process following all MI for reprocessing.
Properly stores items after HLD process in accordance with facility protocols.
Perform all functions of the HLD process including documentation and quality assurance procedures.
Properly and safely load and operate the automated endoscope reprocessors and other HLD equipment as needed.
Refill/replace chemicals as needed according to facility requirement.
Return Case Carts/Sterile Storage Area.
Contracted Sterile Processing Technicians shall:
Follow facility protocol on OR case cart process and sterile storage area regulations.
Prepare case carts for the OR and ensuring that everything on the pull sheet is obtained for the next day's cases.
Maintain appropriate sets in sterile/clean area.
Rotate stock as needed.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
Must possess either a HSPA Certification or a CBSPD Certification.
Have at least two (2) years' current recent experience as a Sterile Processing Service Technician.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), or Military Training Network.
Education Required:
High school education or equivalency.
Physical Requirements:
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications:
Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate.

Determines appropriate method of sterilization and attaches chemical indicator tape to package. Sterilizes items comparing control tests to determine that correct parameters (e.g. time, temperature, and pressure) were obtained. Removes items from pre-sterilizers and determines type of tray or set to assemble based on recognition of key items and the operating room or clinic schedules. Examines items to ensure that gross contamination has been removed. Assembles sets and trays by selecting appropriate tray, lining it with a towel, and arranging instruments in the tray in the correct manner. Strives for a logically arranged package that will permit effective penetration of the sterilizing medium. Places devices in the tray, selects correct wrapping for the tray, and wraps and labels tray. Selects correct sterilizing medium and cycles and operates sterilizer. Aerates gas-sterilized items for correct period of time. Monitors operation of sterilizer with prescribed tests.
Distributes supply items to wards, clinic units, or Operating Rooms: Knowledge of distributing items according to established requirements, special requests or as requisitioned. Fills requests for items based on daily schedules of needs or on individual requisitions. Performs daily inventories of wards or units supply areas and replenishes to appropriate stock levels. Consults with customers on items in short supply or out of stock, recommending possible substitutions. Sends requested items to wards and clinics via automated delivery systems. Periodically inventories stock. Maintains records on stock levels and recommends revisions in stock levels as the need for supplies changes.
Receives/stores/controls supply items stock: Knowledge of receiving new supplies, checks deliveries for quality, quantity, and price. Stores items in accordance with inventory system. Assists with inventory. Assembles and loads ward and operating room carts according to schedules and fills special and emergency requests for supplies.

NBSTSA CST certification, IAHCSMM CRCST certification, and/or CBSPD CSPDT certification
Holds and maintains an active BLS certification

As a Sterile Processing Tech, you need to know how to:
Operate and monitor sterilization equipment.
Disassemble carts and follow Universal Precautions for decontamination.
Sterilize, disinfect durable medical equipment and instruments, package clean supplies and instruments, maintain records for all instruments and transport sterilized items to the floor.
Assemble sterilized instruments and recheck all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly check power equipment.
Take measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
Communicate the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
Respond to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
Utilize applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
Provide on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.

Examines condition of supply items: Experience with visually examining items for damage, deterioration, or imperfections such as rust, pitting, and cracks.
Assembles/packages/wraps/sterilizes supply items: Knowledge or experience in packaging individual items or assembling items into sets or trays. Assembles trays or sets according to guides and in a logical manner, permitting effective sterilization. Determines appropriate method of sterilization and attaches chemical indicator tape to package. Sterilizes items comparing control tests to determine that correct parameters (e.g. time, temperature, and pressure) were obtained. Removes items from pre-sterilizers and determines type of tray or set to assemble based on recognition of key items and the operating room or clinic schedules. Examines items to ensure that gross contamination has been removed. Assembles sets and trays by selecting appropriate tray, lining it with a towel, and arranging instruments in the tray in the correct manner. Strives for a logically arranged package that will permit effective penetration of the sterilizing medium. Places devices in the tray, selects correct wrapping for the tray, and wraps and labels tray. Selects correct sterilizing medium and cycles and operates sterilizer. Aerates gas-sterilized items for correct period of time. Monitors operation of sterilizer with prescribed tests.
Distributes supply items to wards, clinic units, or Operating Rooms: Knowledge of distributing items according to established requirements, special requests or as requisitioned. Fills requests for items based on daily schedules of needs or on individual requisitions. Performs daily inventories of wards or units supply areas and replenishes to appropriate stock levels. Consults with customers on items in short supply or out of stock, recommending possible substitutions. Sends requested items to wards and clinics via automated delivery systems. Periodically inventories stock. Maintains records on stock levels and recommends revisions in stock levels as the need for supplies changes.
Receives/stores/controls supply items stock: Knowledge of receiving new supplies, checks deliveries for quality, quantity, and price. Stores items in accordance with inventory system. Assists with inventory. Assembles and loads ward and operating room carts according to schedules and fills special and emergency requests for supplies.
Qualifications
NBSTSA CST certification, IAHCSMM CRCST certification, and/or CBSPD CSPDT certification
Holds and maintains an active BLS certification
Must be able to accomplish routine work with minimum oversight; required to perform duties on own initiative

As a Certified Sterile Processing Tech, you need to know how to:
Operate and monitor sterilization equipment.
Prioritize daily tasked based on interpretation of surgical schedule, determining the requirement for instruments for each surgical case.
Disassemble carts and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination.
Sterilize, disinfect durable medical equipment and instruments, package clean supplies and instruments, maintain records for all instruments and transport sterilized items to the floor.
Assemble sterilized instruments and recheck all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly check power equipment.
Take measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
Communicate the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
Respond to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
Utilize applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
Provide on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.

Job Description
This position functions primarily in a classified ISO-7 environment and requires the individual to wear appropriate PPE. This position will support sterile filling operations and perform other duties, such as cleaning, restocking, visual inspection, and labeling, as required and/or assigned. All assigned tasks must be conducted in adherence with all applicable procedures, cGMPs, company policies and any other quality or regulatory (Ex: OSHA, DEA, FDA, etc.) requirements. Facility is a multiple shift operation where variable shifts, including weekends, may be required.
Shift: Tuesday to Friday
3 PM to 1:30 AM
Responsibilities:
Strictly adhere to all cGMP, health and safety requirements, procedures, and corporate policies.
Authorized to immediately stop any task that is determined to be an imminent hazard.
Always promote and demonstrate safe work practices and adhere to PPE requirements.
Safely handle chemicals, corrosives, solvents, and other pharmaceutical compounds.
Demonstrate physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and push/pull pallets, product cans, etc. multiple times per shift.
