Functions under the AST guidelines for performance. Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Assists surgical team during operation/procedure by arranging, inventorying and maintaining sterile set up for operation, and passes items as needed. Provides aid in exposure, homeostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out safe operation with optimal results for the patient within AST standards. Primary Responsibilities
1. Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
2. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
3. Demonstrate excellent communication skills and collaborate with the surgeons, specialty team members, and other departments.
4. Serve as a resource for staff and other disciplines.

10. Upon completion of the procedure, the patient shall be evaluated for any possible damage from positioning which will include assessment of the skin. The abnormal condition shall be reported to the surgeon and treatment and documentation shall be carried out.
11. Support cost containment in the use of materials and equipment.
12. Providing visualization of the operative site by the following: Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding. Packing with sponges. Digital manipulation of tissue. Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging. Manipulation of suture materials (e.g., loops, tags, running sutures). Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view.
13. Positioning the patient. The surgeon shall convey the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure. The surgical assistant will carry out this order. Consideration will be given to the patient's comfort and safety. Points of pressure shall be padded: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, and axillary region. Circulation shall not be impaired. (A tourniquet may be required for some procedures.) Nerve damage shall be guarded against. The temperature of the patient should be discussed with the anesthesia personnel and methods employed to maintain the desired temperature range. The surgical assistant shall be familiar with common positions related to the surgical procedure and will be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position.
14. Close all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous, and skin) as per the surgeon's directive. Be familiar with different sutures and suturing techniques to provide the desired outcome.
15. Demonstrate initiative in problem-solving as related to patient and technical issues that contribute to the improvement of the Operating Room function and operation.
16. Utilizing running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or nonabsorbable material of wound layers, including muscle and fascia. 18. Participating in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate.

Experience
A minimum of two (2) years' experience as a surgical technologist preferred.
Physical Demands
Work is moderately active: involves sitting with frequent requirements to move about the office, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility within the SRHS service area. Work involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Employee is responsible for safely moving, lifting and handling all supplies, equipment and patients. Safe lifting practice is expected in all areas of job performance and employees are responsible to request help whenever needed, regardless of the weight, using available assistance, i.e. lifting devices or additional staff.
Work involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease. Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard.
Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound. Work requires close visual and acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision.
Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue. Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that changes may be instituted according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends.
Mental Demands
Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities. Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone. Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels. Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respectable working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations.
Special Demands
Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.). Must have intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook and Word.
Must have a valid driver license as job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area with the employee providing his/her own transportation.
Must be able to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply appropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages. Must possesses a thorough knowledge of AST process standards, and practice within the AST Scope of Practice for "Surgical First Assistant."

What you will do
Performs scrub duties to assist physician/surgeon during complex surgical procedures.
Makes available instruments in proper position and hands instruments/supplies to the surgeon as needed.
Assists the circulator in a timely and accurate preparation of room based on individualized patient assignment, by utilizing the physician preference card.
Assists the circulator to perform surgical counts by following the policy and procedure guidelines.
Prepares suture and dressing for surgeon use.
Maintains a sterile field for surgical services. Ensures adherence to the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques.
Demonstrates initiative in professional development and continuing education. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization.
Serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to new and less experienced surgical techs. Assists with on-the-job training, education and competency validation to ensure technical expertise and compliance with continuing education requirements. Provides input to manager regarding training performance.
Maintains competency to scrub in multiple surgical specialties.
Participates in committees and department activities that promote a healthy, positive environment and encourages and recognizes the contribution of others.
Effectively manages resources such as supplies and equipment. Plans work and completes job responsibilities in an efficient and productive manner.

Physical Demands
