**Minimum Qualifications:** High school or equivalent. Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR card. Current Certified Surgical Technologist Certification with the National Board of Surgical Technologist and Surgical Assistant (NBSTSA) OR Certified Surgical Technologist Certification with National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Completion of an accredited surgical technologist training program.
**Preferred Qualifications:** One (1) year surgical technologist experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES: - Performs first assisting duties in the pre-procedure, intraoperative and post-procedure in complex and highly technical surgical cases. - Performs duties within scope of practice in accordance with established practices, procedures and protocols and instructions as given by surgeon.
QMC Surgical Assistant Training Program: position is Phase III of The Queen's Medical Center (QMC) Surgical Assistant Training Program. At this level, consistently performs all Phase I and II skills, and is able to perform interdependently with the surgeon. Requirements are identified in Section #VI of the job description.
II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Essential: standing, sitting, lifting, walking, finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, static gripping of an object for prolonged periods, frequent gripping of an object.
- Occasional: stooping/bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, squatting, twisting body, reaching above, at and below shoulder level, repetitive arm/hand motions.
- Operates computer, microscope, and various surgical equipment, instrumentation and supplies.
IV. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.
- Exposed to blood and body fluids.
IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
- High School diploma or comparable education and training.
- Current certification as a first assistant (CFA), surgical assistant (CSA), or assistant in surgery by one the following:
o National Board of Surgical Technology and Assisting (NBSTSA)
o National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA)
o American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
o National Assistant at Surgery Council (NASC)
- Current certification in Basic Life Support at the Healthcare Professional Level.
B. EXPERIENCE:
- Prior First Assistant/Surgical Assistant experience preferred.
