All positions are part-time and located in the Cobb County PARKS Department and may be filled as a Lifeguard or Lifeguard/Instructor, depending upon qualifications. The water skills will be the pre-requisite for the lifeguarding class if the applicant isn't certified. Applicants may be asked to complete the water skills as part of the interview process. Applicants must pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking lifeguarding courses.
The water skills test consist of the following:
* 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
* Two-minute tread using legs only
* The ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft. deep, surface and swim 20 yds. with the weight using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds

Lifeguard: $17.00/hr. (Grade: 100P)
Lifeguard/Instructor: $17.51/hr. (Grade 101P) Part-Time Lifeguard:
Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures: ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Observes and oversees the activities of swimmers: scans the water; enforces pool rules; maintains discipline at facility; takes preventive safety actions; rescues distressed swimmers; provides emergency first aid and CPR; and performs other emergency life saving services as needed.

Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor

Minimum Qualifications
Part-Time Lifeguard:
Must be age 15 or older. Must be able to pass a water/skills test. High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor:
Must be age 16 or older. Must be able to pass a water/skills test. High School Diploma or GED supplemented by one year of experience in lifeguarding is preferred.
Part-Time Lifeguard:
The following nationally-recognized certifications are preferred: Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid.
Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor:
The following nationally-recognized certifications are preferred: Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, CPR, and First Aid. Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Job Responsibilities
Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area using constant scanning techniques to achieve a 10x10 reaction time and dealing with redirection and warnings in a timely manner. Remain alert and attentive to all swimmers while on guard.

Greet and develop effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Maintains alertness at all times while observing patrons in and around the facility.
Enforces all rules, regulations and procedures governing the City of Gainesville's aquatic facilities, including compliance with health, safety and building codes; enforces by informing general public participants.
Rescues swimmers in distress; administers first aid to the injured; administers Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), if necessary; calls for emergency assistance, when needed.
Reports all incidents and accidents to the designated Supervisor and completes an accident report.
Monitors activities, special events and programs at pool facilities and assists as needed. Acts as the City's representative during rentals of pool facilities by outside agencies.
Answers telephone and provides public with pertinent information about facility operations and deals with inquiries or complaints from the public in a diplomatic and respectful manner.
Performs general janitorial and attendant work including, but not limited to set-up before events and activities, clean-up after events and activities, cleaning the pool and deck area, bathroom floors and fixtures, concessions areas , store room and office area daily. Checks these areas during each break and spot cleans, as necessary.
Responsible for monitoring and for the minor maintenance of equipment, materials and facilities; reports any damaged and unsafe equipment or required maintenance or materials such as cleaning supplies tothe designated Supervisor.
Moves and lifts heavy equipment, tables, chairs, and other objects to prepare for and clean up after events and programs.
Collects entrance or equipment rental fees and money for food and beverages from customers; makes correct change and issues receipts.
Prevents unauthorized persons from entering the facility.
Checks chemical status of pool several times daily and adds chemicals when needed in absence of the designated Supervisor.
Attends 4 hours of in-service training per month as scheduled by the designated Supervisor.
Assists swiminstructors in teaching Red Cross swimming and water safety courses as assigned by the designated Supervisor.
Informs the designated Supervisor of any problems or changes in regard to the general operation of the facility.
Responsible for the care of the children/adults at the facility they are assigned to.
Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
Assists the designated Supervisor in any phase of the pool's operation not outlined above.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May lock and unlock facilities and notify appropriate authorities in event of an emergency.
