Provide swim instruction exclusively to students in the SNAP program.

Maintain consistency and reliability in attendance and scheduling.

DEFINITION

The Division
The Recreation Services Division is responsible for overseeing recreation activities including youth and adult sports, management of city facilities (park buildings) and a variety of special events throughout the year. The Program
The Recreation Services Division offers a wide variety of Aquatic Programs and Classes at The Victor E. Benstead Plunge pool year-round. The Victor E. Benstead Plunge has been serving the community since 1956. "The Plunge," as commonly referred to, is a heated Olympic sized 50 x 20 meter outdoor pool, open year round. The pool is divided into two courses; one 25 yard and one 26 meter course. The pool is heated year-round to about 80° to 81°. The Plunge operating hours are from 4:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with classes and programs offered at various times.
The Positions
LIFEGUARD ($18.94 - $20.88 per hour)
Lifeguard duties include but are not limited to:
* Enforce pool safety rules and regulations;
* Monitor swimming and other pool activities;
* Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning;
* Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid;
* Inspect swimming pool for cleanliness and perform routine maintenance;
* Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepare written reports of these activities;
* Assist in teaching swimming techniques.
AQUATICS INSTRUCTOR ($19.40 - $21.39 per hour)
Aquatics Instructor duties include but are not limited to:
* Perform lifeguard duties;
* Teach swimming techniques, diving, water polo, and competitive and synchronized swimming;
* May coach the swim team and officiate at swim meets.

THE OPPORTUNITY

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Human Resources (HR) reviews all application materials to determine whether candidates meet the established minimum and preferred qualifications. Those who qualify will be advanced to the next stage of the recruitment process. All applicants will receive email notifications regarding their status.

Appraisal Interview
The appraisal process includes both an oral interview and an in-water/on-deck skills assessment, conducted on the same day. Applicants will take part in a structured oral interview led by a panel of Recreation subject-matter experts. Each candidate will be evaluated on their responses to standardized questions designed to measure their qualifications, communication skills, and overall suitability for the position.
Interviews and skills tests for qualified applicants will be held on a designated weekend at the Paloma Valley High School pool.
IMPORTANT - REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
All applicants who advance to the interview and skills test must complete an Applicant Release of Liability Form on the day of testing.
* Applicants under 18 years of age must have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian.
* Failure to submit this form will result in disqualification from the testing process, as participation in the skills assessment cannot proceed without it.
Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
Eligible List: Once the appraisal has been completed, HR will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Maintain physical fitness, including the ability to swim 300 yards, tread water, and lift, retrieve, and move over 100 pounds, including heavier swimmers and maintain stamina in all types of weather. Ability to exert moderate physical effort in standing and walking, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects. Ability to lift and carry pool equipment, supplies, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds. Additional testing requirements are established by the department.
Sensory demands include the ability to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; and interact with patrons, staff, and the general public, and handle conflict situations involving the enforcement of safety standards and practices.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The employee is constantly exposed to wetness and moisture. The employee may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatic facility, as well as blood and body fluids rendering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Employees may interact with upset facility users and general public while enforcing departmental policies and procedures and safety requirements. The noise level varies between being moderate and loud depending upon pool play and number of users and typically ranges from 70 decibels to 80 decibels or higher. The employee is expected to work variable hours, including different shifts, evenings, and weekends.
