RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direction of the Assistant Program Director to support the academic and workforce development goals of the EXCEL Adult Literacy and Workforce Development program. Provide basic education to adults and out-of-school youth while creating a nurturing and supportive environment Teach, develop, and help prepare adults to master subtests which consist of four sections of the GED Test which include, reading, writing and comprehension skills in the areas of: Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA*), Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. Prepare lessons and instructional activities based on student interests, ability level, English proficiency, and other factors in the class Plan classwork and homework assignments to support students' understanding of course objectives and basic skills for literacy Develop weekly class assessments to measure each student's mastery level of benchmark skills and determine progress in the class Provide instruction to students using a variety of sound teaching methods, such as whole class instruction, collaborative practice, and independent task completion, while developing problem solving skills in adults Review progress with students throughout the year in individual meetings and discuss methods to help make improvements Create units of study based on common course objectives, best practices in education and tested skills on the GED assessment Maintain an orderly classroom during instruction and other times by establishing procedures for students and expectations for behavior Research, evaluate and assess adult literacy issues appropriate to adult literacy programs. Improvise their job opportunities Maintains confidentiality; have good time management & communication skills; have the ability to accept persons from differing backgrounds and economic situations; have patience; and basic Microsoft Office suite computer skills. Perform additional duties as assigned by manager and leadership QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in adult literacy, ESOL or education or equivalent experience Completion of an internship in adult literacy education Certified literacy teacher Ability to work weekends, weekdays, and flex schedule if needed Two or more years of experience working with adult learners PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time. Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork. Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents. Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation. Have a positive and friendly attitude. 5. Properly dresses in a swim suit at all times. 6. Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to shift start time and be on deck 5 minutes prior to class time. 7. Instructor must make sure classes start on time and end on time, adjusting of class time is not acceptable or the decision of the instructor. 8. Take accurate attendance at the beginning of each class. 9. Make every effort to know each child's name by third class. 10. Be prepared to teach and know the subject of your instruction. 11. Demonstrate swim techniques in the water. (Polliwog & Guppy instructors must be in the water at all times. Minnow I & above levels, instructor must be in a minimum of 4 complete classes). 12. Send home evaluations reports during the scheduled evaluation period. Positive feedback should be the primary objective. 16. Remind parents of the pre-registration period. 17. Never leave the deck once your class has begun. 18. Retrieve all equipment you will need for your lesson prior to class starting and put away when you've completed your class. 19. When unable to work, it is your responsibility to find a sub, submit it on the sub sheet to the Aquatic Director or Assistant Aquatic Director 24 hours prior to your shift. 20. All notices will be attached to your paychecks, it is imperative that you read such notices and act accordingly when necessary. 21. Each session should have a character development segment incorporated into it. 22. All instructors are expected to follow the House Rules. 23. Instructors are required to encourage a family friendly and member friendly environment. Job Summary We are a COVID-19 proactive organization that follows applicable health and safety regulations to help protect our members and staff. The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for attentively and safely providing swimming instruction, facilitating swimming activities to fulfill program goals, and building relationships among members and staff. Job Requirements Frontline employees are not required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, however, BCNY strongly encourages all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and obtain a booster shot. Responsibilities Facilitate Red Cross ‘Learn to Swim' programs for members ages 6-21 As directed by the Aquatics Director, develop cooperative age-appropriate swimming pool activities Ensure that activity plans are implemented as scheduled and that participants improve Take initiative, provide problem solving, and respond appropriately, to participant situations in swimming pool areas Ensure that all necessary reports are completed on a daily basis Use behavior management strategies to defuse inappropriate behavior Attend required department meetings and professional development trainings Other duties as assigned Qualifications At least 1-year experience as a pool lifeguard, instructor, or comparable Demonstrated leadership experience in an educational, social service and/or youth development setting Familiarity with principles of supervision, organization, and maintenance Current Water Safety Certification from the American Red Cross required Previous experience working with children required First Aid and CPR Certification required What We Offer PTO: Sick time only The Boys' Club of New York is an equal opportunity employer and makes employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, or any other status protected by law.
