Under the direction of the Safety Program Manager for Aquatics, the lifeguard instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control, and safety of all class participants. The lifeguard instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all materials and equipment used for lifeguard instruction. It is the lifeguard instructor's responsibility to observe and direct all class participants, and to provide feedback and appropriate correction according to the American Red Cross or Lifesaving Society. This is a highly skilled water safety work at City swimming pool facilities. This position copes with large groups, including children, monitoring both visually and audible to insure safety, facility rules and health standards. Duties include enforcing rules and regulations governing use of facilities, preventing injury or loss of life, and administering first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation as necessary. Lifeguards are responsible for assisting with routine pool maintenance and custodial duties and other tasks as assigned by supervisors. Work schedules will vary. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and regulations concerning public use of swimming areas and established water safety practices. Supervision is received from the Aquatic Facility Manager who reviews work through personal observations for effective application of life guarding techniques. Work may occasionally be performed under adverse weather conditions. Under the direction of the Safety Program Manager for Aquatics, the lifeguard instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control, and safety of all class participants. The lifeguard instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all materials and equipment used for lifeguard instruction. It is the lifeguard instructor's responsibility to observe and direct all class participants, and to provide feedback and appropriate correction according to the American Red Cross or Lifesaving Society. Under the direction of the Director of Competitive & Developmental Swimming, Head Swim Coach, and/or the Center Aquatics Director, the Swim Coach will assist with all aspects of planning and preparation for the Tampa YMCA Swim Team program. The Swim Coach will assist in the development and recruitment of swimmers participating with the Tampa YMCA Swim Team programs and YMCA Swim Lesson program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assist the Head Swim Coach with the development and implementation of workouts, trainings and season plans. * Lead supervised structured practices and/or dry land trainings, ensure attendance is documented. * Evaluate swimmer ability/performance and plan strategies for their improvement. * Assist in coordinating and executing swim team competitions and meet registrations. * Attend specified competitions, training and/or special events as directed by the Head Swim Coach or Director of Competitive & Developmental Swimming. * Develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies for athletes in the program. * Follow all safety recommendations and guidelines per Tampa YMCA policies and USA Swimming * Communicate program information effectively and in a timely manner to supervisors, participants and their families. * Establishes and maintains a team attitude, and encourages good sportsmanship for athletes and parents. * Attend all required staff meetings. Education/ Experience Required: * Must be at least 18 years of age. * High School Diploma preferred. * A Minimum 2+ years of experience coaching swimming or 2+ years in competitive swimming. * Knowledge of USA regulations and safety requirements. Certifications/Trainings Required: * Must obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain current certifications in BLS CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration. * USA Swimming Coaching Certification required. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job including, but not limited to: * The employee frequently is required to remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness. * The employee frequently is required to see, observe, and hear all participants, and make sound judgments and decisions. * Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances (in normal and loud situations), and communicate swiftly and effectively with lifeguards, staff, emergency personnel and members. * Ability to observe all areas of the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, and hear noises and recognize victims in distress * Remain in or around designated aquatic areas at all times. * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to to move to various locations, sit and/or stand for extended periods, including in and around elevated chair. * Ability to direct and control the activities of others, to work under specific instructions, work alone and under stressful conditions. * Ability to crouch and bend at the waist and knees. * Ability to physically and mentally perform all needed rescues, removals (in and out of the water) and survival skills, including administering CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen effectively. * Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. * Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds. * Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. * Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness, heat and cold. * The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. * This position may require availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Depending on candidate availability and the time of year, Instructor typically work between 6-30 hours per week.
