Internship: This position is a paid, full-time, limited term assignment at our Austin, TX headquarters that offers interns the opportunity to gain substantive hands on experience. Interns enjoy the opportunity to get training and mentoring from experienced professionals in one or more areas. Interns may also be eligible to continue working part-time through the fall and spring semesters, depending on department and agency needs.
The Health Automation & Operations Intern will work closely with the Health Division Chief Health Care Officer, Chief of Staff, and Health Administrative Support Supervisor to streamline and organize internal files and emails, automate routine tasks, and support the Division's strategic plan using Microsoft Office suite tools (SharePoint, PowerAutomate, Outlook, OneDrive, etc). This internship will provide the opportunity to leverage Microsoft tools and AI to automate business operations. The incumbent will respond to internal requests, automate email and filing systems, and help with strategic planning. This position will proactively work with the team, Health staff, and agency employees.
This position will start on June 4th 2026 and will end on August 7th 2026.
Salary will be dependent upon education level:

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Automation & Organization
* Assist the Health Division Chief Health Care Officer organize and maintain internal files and emails using SharePoint, Outlook, OneNote, and OneDrive.
* Leverage PowerAutomate and other Microsoft tools to automate timely reminders, emails, scheduling, and review of administrative tasks (e.g., scheduling quarterly meetings, updating SharePoint users, organizing SharePoint sites).
* Assist in automating the updating and tracking of the Health Division's strategic plan and deliverables.
* Support the Health Administrative Support Supervisor in automating and improving workflows for administrative processes.
* Create PowerBI dashboards for long-term data management and organization
* Create and deploy AI agents in Microsoft Copilot to enhance operations

POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, but regularly operating independently, serves as a peace officer and performs a wide variety of community-oriented police services and public assistance in alignment with the mission of the Forest Preserve District. Work requires the ability to travel to and patrol a significant number of preserves as needed within an assigned shift. General supervision is provided by the Director of Public Safety and the Police Sergeant.
ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES and FUNCTIONS to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation
Works varying shifts performing security patrols, traffic control, investigation and first aid at accidents, detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct
Works an assigned shift using independent judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance
Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone and responds to emergency radio calls
Carries out duties in conformance with federal, state and county laws and ordinances
Patrols assigned areas to provide a welcoming and safe environment within the preserves
Investigates misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations and to otherwise serve and protect
Arrests and constrains suspected law violators using reasonable and lawful methods
Interrogates suspects, witnesses and drivers, preserves evidence, investigates and renders assistance at scene of vehicular accidents, takes measurements and draws diagrams of scene
Summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles as needed based on the situation
Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift
Seeks out and questions victim, witnesses and suspects including developing leads and preparing for cases and providing testimony
Searches crime scenes
Analyzes and evaluates evidence
Prepares a variety of reports and records in an accurate and timely manner
Practices the philosophy of community-oriented police work including assisting residents when necessary and appropriate and explaining laws and District ordinances to the public
Coordinates activities and exchanges information with other officers, other District Divisions, and other law enforcement agencies as needed
Maintains contact with the Director of Public Safety and Sergeant to coordinate investigation activities.
Provides mutual assistance during emergency situations
Patrols forest preserve property by emergency equipped vehicle, on foot, bicycle, and/or by use of specialized vehicle (motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, etc.)
Provides first aid and CPR to injured preserve users and/or employees
Establishes positive relationships with community and preserve users and assists preserve users by providing information and answering questions
Maintains vehicles and equipment and reports any equipment failure or damage
Attends and/or completes all required training such as firearm training and obtains and maintains required certifications and/or licenses
Open and closes preserve gates as needed
Responds to emergency call-outs on a 24-hour, 7-days a week basis
Works irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays
Possesses and maintains a valid and current Illinois driver's license free from suspension or revocation during term of employment; must maintain insurability with the District's fleet insurance carrier
Attends professional conferences, workshops and seminars as appropriate within budget parameters and with Department Head approval
Obtains and maintains all required licenses and certifications and keeps up-to-date on professional trends and developments related to position accountabilities
Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, the Employee Handbook, and applicable laws and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum age: twenty-one
Completion of high school diploma or GED equivalent
Must be a graduate of a State of Illinois basic recruit academy and meet requirements for Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board for Certified Police Officer or eligible to receive a waiver of training
Must be legally able to work in the United States
Must have experience as a sworn law enforcement officer
Must hold a valid Firearm Owner's ID

Nature Education Specialist reports directly to the Nature Education Supervisor and will work at various parks within Mansfield and the Mansfield Activities Center (MAC). Responsibilities will include, but not limited to the development and execution of a variety of outdoor recreation programs and educational programs. There are 3 main facets to this position: Field Trips, Nature Education (teaching), and Outdoor Education (kayaking, archery, etc.). Choose your focus area and get trained to assist in the other areas!
EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:
Conduct daily outdoor recreational activities for children of all ages including archery workshops, kayaking tours, fishing programs, camping events, and more.
Conduct daily outdoor educational program such as field trips, summer camp, preschool & home school programs, scout programs, birthday parties, nature craft classes, nature hikes, science classes, and more.
Assist with other Nature Education programs, classes and activities as needed.
Assist with marketing Nature Education programs by having booths at events to promote Oliver Nature Park, helping with newsletters, and more.
Develop new exciting programs for families, children, and adults.
Assist staff in planning, developing, promoting, executing and evaluating recreational programs for all ages.
Observe safety precautions; correct minor safety problems; conduct activities in a safe manner.
Maintain discipline at all times using appropriate behavior management techniques.
Operate city-owned 15 passenger van for local day trips and field trips as well as other city-owned vehicles and trailers.
Attend mandatory staff trainings and meetings.
Perform basic office duties such as answering phones, making copies, faxing, filing, and gathering data.
Enforce and maintain all Parks and Recreation policies and procedures as needed
Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.

(Some auxiliary assignments will be performed at other alternative locations and during hours outside of the normal daily work schedule).
* When necessary, will be required to support the call center by answering calls for the replenishment of supplies, help judges locate paperwork in their boxes, and document and record the completion status for calls into an electronic database file.
* Responsible for placing forms, documents, and supplies in boxes for storage by lifting item onto shelves or stacking them onto pallets for placement into overhead storage bays and required to operate a pallet jack for large heavy items that cannot be moved or safely lifted.
* Assist in cleaning the warehouse storage area and keeping the area well organized and must pull damaged and out of date items and dispose of them per established recycling requirements.
* Required to work as a supply "delivery runner" to drop-off requested supplies at designated voting centers. Must have dependable transportation.

Performs routine safety and health program work. Work involves assisting with the development of safety policies and procedures; participating in the safety training and education of staff; inspecting work areas and activities for hazards; and assisting in investigating accidents. II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Conducts inspections of unit operations and facilities to ensure compliance with established risk management guidelines, policies, and procedures; prepares evaluative reports; recommends improvements and modifications to resolve problems and deficiencies; and prepares responses to requests for information related to unit operations and activities.
B. Assists in investigating reported hazards, accidents, injuries, fires, and other incidents; inspects construction, remodeling, and renovation sites to ensure compliance with safety standards; conducts Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) site assessments; and prepares inspection and investigative reports and recommendations.
C. Assists unit administration during situations that pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury; assists in implementing appropriate corrective action; and prepares reports and maintains contact with other departments and regional staff.
D. Monitors the use, maintenance, and storage of hazardous materials, safety equipment, and devices; and monitors environmental factors, operating procedures, safety procedures, contamination, and pollution.
E. Assists in developing, implementing, and conducting safety-training programs; ensures compliance with training requirements and documentation; and provides technical assistance.

III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education, Experience, and Training
1. Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
2. One year full-time, wage-earning experience in criminal justice, risk management or a related field (e.g., loss control, workers' compensation, environmental science, occupational safety, or industrial hygiene). Fifteen semester hours from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE) may be substituted for each six months of experience.
3. Successful completion of the Alternate Unit Risk Manager (AURM), Collateral Duty Safety Officer (CDSO), or Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) certification programs preferred.
B. Knowledge and Skills
1. Knowledge of risk management program operations, practices, and procedures.
2. Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes.
3. Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
4. Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
