A Technical Account Manager, as the name suggests, provides technical support to customers before, during, and after-sale. Though it might seem simple, the Manager has many things to do over a workweek.

Amongst other things, the Manager maintains a financial and performance database, researches market trends and needs, reports on efficiency and sales statistics, ensures that products are delivered on time and unbroken, teaches customers how to use the product, and reports to the developers and manufacturers on the feedback of consumers in hopes of improving the product.

A person hoping to become a Technical Account Manager must, generally, have at least a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering or a similar subject. They must also have some experience working in sales and technical support and must have a good understanding of both. Being a people's person and having good communication, computer, and analysis skills are important too.

What general advice would you give to a technical account manager?

While it is exciting to be starting your first job as a recent graduate, don't be too hasty. Be sure you are entering a positive atmosphere with strong leadership. Take time to ask about the company culture and turnover rates. You can find low and high turnover rate ratios on the Internet for your industry. A high turnover rate company likely has a poor working atmosphere.
