1960

He founded (1960) what became the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), which aired his talk show, The 700 Club.

1961

In late 1961, he began broadcasting religious content, funded by small donations from individuals and local churches.

1964

During the telethon Robertson asked viewers to pray for the 700 supporters needed to keep CBN on the air. Its goal was to raise enough money to cover the station’s $7,000-a-month operating expenses for 1964.

1965

In 1965 Robertson incorporated the telethon’s fundraising into a program that he named The 700 Club.

1976

CBN began to reach an international audience in 1976 when its first international broadcast was heard in the Philippines.

1977

On April 29, 1977, CBN launched a religious cable network, the CBN Satellite Service.

1978

Another international effort, Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation, was begun in 1978.

Robertson subsequently founded CBN University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and it opened to students in 1978.

1981

The channel was later revamped as the CBN Cable Network in 1981, and began incorporating secular programming alongside religious content.

1982

In the 1990s the station began broadcasting news, sports, family entertainment, and religious programming via satellite. It began broadcasting from South Lebanon in April 1982 and also had operations in Israel.

Internationally, CBN launched the Middle East Television Network (METV) in 1982.

CBN’s financial commitment to Operation Blessing International reached $1 million by 1982.

1988

After a strong start, however, his support waned, and Robertson withdrew from the race in February 1988.

1988: CBN Cable is renamed the CBN Family Channel.

1990

In 1990 the cable network was sold to International Family Entertainment, Inc.

In 1990 CBN began targeting the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), formerly the Soviet Union.

1994

1994: CBN Asia is launched.

1995

1995: CBN WorldReach is launched.

1997

In 1997 it began 24-hour satellite broadcasts, and its broadcasts were also seen on all cable systems in Israel.

1997: METV begins satellite broadcasts over the entire Middle East region.

1998

The Flying Hospital flew its first mission into El Salvador in 1996. It was sold in 2000 to a charitable nonprofit organization but continued to remain an integral part of OBI’s evangelical missions.

2001

In March 2001 it laid off 50 workers at its Virginia Beach office, most of them in television production.

During 2001 it received $51.7 million worth of food, clothing, cleaning supplies, toys, and other items from corporations and product donors.

In 2001 it won awards for Best Children's Program, Best Animated Program, and Best Use of Computer Animation from Axiem, Telly, and Omni International.

2001: METV is sold to LeSEA Broadcasting.

2002

The following year he founded the Christian Coalition, an influential conservative political organization, and served as its head until 2002.

2007

In 2007 he stepped down as CEO of CBN and was replaced by his son Gordon Robertson.
