    / Career Interest: The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Kansas Cancer Center and The University of Kansas Health System is seeking an outstanding medical physicist to join our faculty at the Clinical Instructor/Assistant Professor level. This position will be primarily located at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka, KS. About University of Kansas Cancer Center-Department of Radiation Oncology The University of Kansas Cancer Center is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The University of Kansas Cancer Center has recently received a $100 million lead gift to build a new, state-of-the-art destination cancer center. The Department of Radiation Oncology provides cancer care services throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area with over 4,300 treatment courses annually. By July 2024, the Division of Medical Physics will be fully staffed at 21 faculty medical physicists, 18 medical dosimetrists, 4 medical physics residents (2 PGY-1's and 2 PGY-2's), and 1 department-funded clinical research fellow. The Department has just completed a Varian Eclipse/ARIA RTM v18.0 upgrade, the first in the US. KU's IBA ProteusONE is projected to be the first in the region to deliver FLASH therapy. In the upcoming five years, 4 LINACs and 2 Siemens CT simulators will be installed/replaced. The Department has a newly renovated 1200 sq. ft. physics research space located right next to the clinical area on the main Cancer Center campus, and it houses both computational and instrumentation labs. The Medical Physics group at KU strives for excellence in both clinical and research and is rapidly growing a national reputation in many areas, including treatment planning, dosimetry, instrumentation, QA/QC, proton therapy, FLASH, optimization, Monte-Carlo simulations, and more. The Medical Physics research is currently being funded by multiple NIH grants, industry grants and KUCC physicist/scientist recruiting grants. Collaborations with the physics and engineering departments at the KU Lawrence campus create abundant exciting opportunities for both academic research and education. Our primary network includes 7 locations with 11 Varian linear accelerators including TrueBeam, Edge and Ethos. The Department has recently completed a Varian ARIA/Eclipse v18.0 upgrade, the first in the US, and maintains a close relationship with Varian, IBA, and other equipment vendors providing unique opportunities for collaboration. The Department of Radiation Oncology is one of a dozen ABS fellowship training sites for both HDR and LDR brachytherapy for prostate and gynecological cancer. The University of Kansas Proton Center is equipped with a state-of-the-art IBA ProteusONE compact proton therapy system, a RayStation v2023B treatment planning system, and an SDX respiratory gating system that are integrated within Varian's ARIA V18.0, the first ProteusONE center doing so in the world. The system is LATTICE, FLASH, and minibeam capable. Since our proton center opened in May 2022, we have successfully treated more than six hundred patients. The Proton Center is a founding member of the Conformal Flash Alliance and there is an ongoing research agreement with IBA for its preclinical validation and clinical implementation. The sonographer manages the initiation of critical value notification to expedite optimal patient outcomes. We are willing to train you for this! Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions Obtains a patient history and performs a pre ultrasound procedure assessment. The sonographer must utilize their professional knowledge to verify that the exam ordered is consistent with the patient history, indication and/or diagnosis and assessment findings. In the presence of any inconsistencies they clarify the procedure with the ordering physician. They interact and communicate with patients; explaining the procedure, reassuring them and eliciting their cooperation as needed. Performs professional, clinical and technical competencies of assigned location, but not limited to assigned shifts and be readily available when scheduled to perform on-call echocardiographic services as assigned to provide emergent echocardiographic services under the direction of a cardiologist. Demonstrates the ability to identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences that would be consistent with disease process. Any additional enhancements that would provide beneficial information are initiated with the sonographer unless otherwise noted by the ordering physician. Demonstrates both cognitive and psychomotor skill sets in the area of cardiovascular disease states. These skill sets are necessary to accurately and efficiently obtain the appropriate vascular and echocardiographic ultrasound images and hemodynamic information as appropriate. Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of the patients while they are under their care. Interacts and communicates with patients, explaining the procedure, reassuring them and eliciting their cooperation as needed. Maintains cleanliness of supplies, stocks linen and empties laundry on a daily basis. The sonographer must demonstrate an understanding of the imaging planes obtained during a TEE exam. Assists the physician in the accurate acquisition of images from the esophagus. At the KU location the sonographer completes appropriate TEE probe cleaning and disinfecting. Demonstrates an understanding of the imaging planes needed to assist with sonographer-guided thrombin injection procedures in performed in the cath lab under the direction of the cardiologist. Organizes the acquired data in the appropriate sequence that will accurately represent the patient's condition to the interpreting physician. In the presence of critical values the sonographer must display competence in identifying, documenting and communicating this to the interpreting physician. Working closely with the interpreting physician in interpretive sessions, assisting in the evaluation of data and contributing relevant technical information. In accordance with the departmental QI program; the sonographer must provide quality, constructive feedback on peer to peer case study review as assigned; return QI studies to the technical director or their designee in a timely manner.
