The Wardlaw+Hartridge School company history timeline

1882

In 1882, the precursor to the Wardlaw School, The Leal School for Boys, headed by Mr.

1884

The Misses Scribner and Newton's School for Girls was founded in 1884 in Plainfield near the Wardlaw School.

1894

The Nursing Training School at Muhlenberg Hospital was established in 1894.

1903

The school name was changed to The Hartridge School when, in 1903, Miss Hartridge became the school's owner.

1916

In 1916, Charles Digby "Pop" Wardlaw moved from teacher to Head and purchased the school, and changed its name to The Wardlaw School.

1920

Hartridge graduates filled six key college leadership posts in one year in the 1920's, at Vassar, Smith, Radcliffe and Wilson.

1924

Located on Muhlenberg Place, the school is believed to have come under the control of the Plainfield Board of Education at a later point and closed around 1924.

1926

The duCret School of Art began as the Van Emburgh School of Art in 1926 seeking "to prepare students for entry into a career in the visual arts."

1959

In 1959, the school was purchased from 'Pop' Wardlaw and renamed The Wardlaw Country Day School.

1976

The Wardlaw School and the Hartridge School merged into one coeducational school, the Wardlaw-Hartridge School, in 1976.

1991

In 1991, many students of the Vail-Deane School were assimilated into the Wardlaw-Hartridge School.

1997

In 1997, the consolidation of the lower, middle, and upper schools to a single campus was completed when the Lower School moved into a new wing on the Upper School campus in Edison.

2000

The Soumas Heritage School of Music opened in April 2000 and quickly achieved a fine reputation, offering adults and children instruction in voice and a large variety of musical instruments.
