The Medical Director (MD) under direction of the field management team, is responsible for establishing the medical quality and patient care practiced by all doctors in a given hospital. The MD achieves this through strong leadership and serving as a mentor and role model for the associate veterinarians and staff. An MD should demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity, and a consistent positive attitude. The MD is also an integral part of the hospital management team responsible for the overall financial performance of the hospital, and helps create and drive the overall direction for the hospital that will achieve positive results. The MD also fulfills all of the duties of a staff veterinarian in addition to the specific responsibilities of Medical Director.

The summer student patient care associate is a student enrolled full-time in an AVMA accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine/veterinary medical doctor training program or veterinary technician/technologist/nursing training program. Students will be employed as temporary associates for 8-12 weeks, between May and September. Students will be immersed in specialty and emergency medicine to augment the medical knowledge and technical skill that they have acquired thus far in school. The summer student patient care associate will assist the doctors, technicians, and advanced patient care associates with all aspects of patient care and client communication.
As a Summer Student Patient Care Associate, you will:
Possess knowledge of basic veterinary terminology and abbreviations
Able to appropriately and safely restrain canine and feline patients
Able to perform a basic physical examination to collect patient vital signs
Triage patients over the phone and in-person
Collect a basic history from a client
Ability to input patient data into the medical record system. Document treatments administered, treatment adjustments per the attending doctor, and communication with the doctor, client, or primary care veterinarian.
Assist clinician and technicians through the exam and diagnostic workup process
Effectively communicate discharge instructions to a client
Support clinician and client through the euthanasia process
Participate in the delivery of basic and advanced life support as directed by the clinician
Perform phlebotomy
Place intravenous catheter
Accurately perform basic medical math
Administer subcutaneous fluids
Administer SQ, IM, or IV injections
Operate basic equipment including fluid pumps, syringe pumps, SpO2 monitor, ETCO2 monitor, indirect blood pressure monitors (Doppler and oscillometric)
Run basic in-house diagnostic tests including CBC, chemistry panel, urinalysis, coagulation profiles, blood gases, and process slides for cytologic interpretation
Obtain diagnostic quality radiographs using proper techniques and personal protective equipment
Students with prior veterinary medical experience or in advanced stages of their curriculum may be able to complete:
Placement of the indwelling urinary catheter
Bandage application
Endotracheal intubation
Anesthesia monitoring
Assist clinician in advanced procedures such as endoscopy or surgical assist
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a full-time student enrolled in an AVMA accredited DVM/VMD or veterinary technician/technologist/nursing program.
Must be available for a minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks during May - September.
No prior emergency or specialty medicine experience is required. However, animal experience is preferred.

Program Structure
Phase 1 (Weeks 1-14):
4 Weeks of Bootcamp: A combination of virtual (Weeks 1-2) and in-person (Weeks 3-4) training to build foundational emergency medicine skills.
2 Weeks of Specialty Rotations: Gain exposure to various specialties to enhance your understanding and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
8 Weeks of ER Shifts: Apply your training in a real-world setting under the mentorship of experienced emergency clinicians.
Phase 2 (Weeks 15-32):
Increased Responsibility: Transition to managing more complex cases with greater independence while still receiving guidance from mentors.
ER Shift Focus: Work full shifts in the ER, continuing to develop critical thinking and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment.
Ongoing Mentorship: Regular check-ins with mentors to review cases, address challenges, and refine clinical skills.
Exposure to Diverse Cases: Handle a variety of emergency cases to broaden expertise and build confidence in emergency medicine.
Ongoing Didactics: Participate in a weekly webinar series designed to enhance your learning and keep you updated on the latest practices in emergency veterinary medicine.
Phase 3 (Weeks 33-52):
Independent Case Management: Take on full responsibility for managing emergency cases, showcasing confidence and competence in clinical decision-making.
Continued Collaboration: Work alongside the hospital team to provide exceptional patient care while honing leadership and communication skills.
Advanced Skill Application: Apply advanced diagnostic and procedural skills gained throughout the program to handle high-acuity cases.
