Shift Details: We are open seven days a week, and typically schedule four 10s. Weekends preferred, closed on major holidays.

Job Summary: This position provides leadership and training to the medical support staff in the operation of a small animal facility in accordance with hospital policy and procedures and provides medical care to patients as allowed in the veterinary practice act. Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be proficient in a variety of skills ranging from but not limited to laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, surgery, dental and nursing skills.
Ability to demonstrate patience and composure in stressful situations, and ability to handle a fast-paced environment.
Ability to stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
Ability to give SQ, IM and IV injections.
Knowledge of usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs and ability to readily explain them to the clients.
Knowledge of the common anesthesia and recovery states and ability to alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients.
Ability to properly extubate, monitor temperature and recover a patient from anesthesia.
The employee must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.
The employee must be confident around pets.
Required Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
State Department of Regulation Licensing required.

Physical Requirements:
The employee must have the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with a coworker.
The employee must be able to endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods of time.
The employee must possess sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while in hospital environment.
The employee must be able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
The employee will be routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.

We require a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) licensed in the State of Oregon who is detail-oriented, highly organized, proactive, accountable, and an excellent communicator with a genuine passion for animal welfare and saving rescue dogs in need.
As the primary medical point person, this role manages the full spectrum of care, from initial intake to post adoption support and everything in between. The Medical Manager serves as the essential link connecting shelters, foster homes, adopters, and our valued veterinary partners, ensuring seamless and high-quality medical oversight for every dog.
Core responsibilities include administering physical examinations and immunizations, managing medical records, maintaining inventory, and possessing an expert knowledge of pharmaceuticals, common diseases, their symptoms, treatment, and preventative care in order to inform intake decisions, help foster homes, and ensure good medical decisions are made. Given the nature of rescue work, availability for medical emergencies is a must, as is the ability to compassionately weigh in on rare medical euthanasia decisions as part of a team.
The Medical Manager will also be responsible for helping to establish and grow our medical policies and processes.
Key Responsibilities
Hands On Care
* Be on-site at New Dog Days to address the medical needs of, and questions about, newly arriving shelter dogs.
* Support Wellness Exams alongside licensed veterinarians by assisting with initial examinations, administering vaccinations and medications, and providing necessary follow up care.
* Assist veterinarians during exams by performing preliminary physical evaluation, maintaining thorough medical notes, and ensuring accurate record-keeping.
* Administer booster vaccinations, implant microchips, and provide additional support for care within the scope of licensure.

Function/Duties of Position
The Clinical Veterinary Technician 1 assists in providing clinical care, nursing support and husbandry for a variety of laboratory research animals. This is the first level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the higher levels with increased level of oversight on clinical cases and focus on assisting surgical procedures. This role will be supervised or guided by senior staff and DVMs. At this level there is an emphasis on animal health, training, and greater supervision. It is distinguished from other Veterinary Technician series by the emphasis on clinical care and nursing support. Work inside an ABSL3 facility is a requirement of this position.

Rounds/Triage
With oversight, evaluates new and ongoing clinical cases
Provides basic treatments within clinic guidelines or as determined by the attending veterinarian

Function/Duties of Position
The Clinical Veterinary Technician 1 assists in providing clinical care, nursing support and husbandry for a variety of laboratory research animals. This is the first level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the higher levels with increased level of oversight on clinical cases and focus on assisting surgical procedures. This role will be supervised or guided by senior staff and DVMs. At this level there is an emphasis on animal health, training, and greater supervision. It is distinguished from other Veterinary Technician series by the emphasis on clinical care and nursing support. Work inside an ABSL3 facility is a requirement of this position.
Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards
Rounds/Triage
* With oversight, evaluates new and ongoing clinical cases
* Provides basic treatments within clinic guidelines or as determined by the attending veterinarian
* Determines which cases need immediate care from the attending veterinarian, and which can be managed through routine practices
Nursing and Critical care
* Provides assistance and support in the assessment, treatment, and stabilization of patients with urgent medical needs.
* May independently stabilize patients while the veterinarian is en route.
* Provides ongoing care for patients with potentially life-threatening illness or injury whose condition is likely to change moment to moment.
* Monitors recovery from sedation and patient care, including creation of medical records and administration of medications.
* Performs general nursing functions in the clinical hospital, hospitalized patient area, and animal housing facilities
Therapeutics
* Performs standard clinical procedures on research animals including but not limited to: checking for standard pathogens and treating as appropriate; venipuncture, intravenous and urethral catheter placement; medication dose calculations; administration of medications via intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal and oral routes; body fluid and tissue collection; cleans, debrides, sutures, and bandages wounds; assists with dental manipulations; monitoring of animals receiving gas anesthetics.

* Checks clinical cases daily for signs of abnormal behavior, illness, or injury
* Records information necessary to document adequate clinical care; and reports observed findings to veterinarians
* Records requested environmental data; fills out death record on dead or euthanized animals.

General Maintenance

Animal Restraint: Developing skills for restraint of patients for diagnostic procedures (i.e. ultrasonography, radiology), sample collection, assist with medical procedures. Develop skills to restrain fractious and anxious patients in a safe and humane manner.

The Team
Certified Veterinary Technicians work collaboratively with the medical and operations leadership team to ensure the clinic's overall performance in accordance with all the medical standards set forth by our executive leadership and in compliance with the OVMEB veterinary practice act.
The Position
The Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is a vital member of the Shelter Medicine team. As part of our high volume, high quality veterinary hospital your responsibilities include proficient venipuncture, intubation of dogs and cats of various sizes, preparing, monitoring, and assisting veterinarians with procedures and surgery. Work under the direction of a veterinarian, performing triage exams, entering medical records, restraining animals, administering patient treatments, performing euthanasia, and maintaining the facility at the highest level of cleanliness and order. CVTs also engage with the public, veterinary community and shelter staff to provide consultation and information. All OHS staff members contribute to the stewardship of the organization's mission and are expected to stay current on and understand issues related to animal welfare and OHS programs.
This is a part-time, 20 hour/week position with a schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Thurs, Friday from 7am - 1pm (24 total hours/week). Occasional Holiday work may be required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist veterinarians with physical examinations and help determine the nature of illness or injury.
Handle individual animals of varying species, size, and temperament in a caring, respectful, and safe manner.
Ensure that animals with infectious diseases are handled safely and according to infectious medicine protocols.
Perform patient care including taking and recording TPR, dressing wounds, and applying splints and other protective devices.
Administer medications, fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian.
Perform routine lab procedures and tests, collect urine, draw blood, and perform skin scrapings.
Place catheters, administer intravenous fluids and tube feedings.

Enter medical and treatment notes according to established protocols in a timely and accurate manner.

Basic Qualifications

Medical Related Skills:
Phlebotomy
IV catheter placement
Preparing and restraining animals during procedures
Anesthetic induction
Anesthetic monitoring
Assisting in surgery
Suture cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues
Apply bandages and/or splints
Wound care
Ability to use a stethoscope and otoscope
Advising pet owners on proper care, etc.
Duties (including but not limited to):
Demonstrate excellent relations with client/ pets in the waiting area and exam rooms
Exceed the client's expectations of service
Compassionate nursing care is the top priority for all patients
Housekeeping/ maintenance
Ability to perform a cursory examination of an animal
Ability to recognize potential patient issues
Clearly communicate your findings to a doctor
Record keeping
Fill prescription and dispense medications as prescribed by the doctor, etc.
Education and Physical Requirements:
College or college-equivalent education as required in becoming a Certified Veterinary Technician if applying to be a CVT
Dependable attendance is required
Must be able to lift 40 pounds
Must be willing to work long or irregular hours under pressure conditions
The ability to walk, bend, stand, squat, or reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
