Position Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Research Scientist to lead R&D efforts in design and development of electrolyte and electrode and for next-generation lithium-ion battery systems, particularly sodium-ion batteries and lithium-sulfur (Li-S). Formulate electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, and compatibility with reactive electrodes (e.g., Li metal, sulfur cathode, hard carbon). Develop strategies to suppress polysulfide shuttle effect, dendrite growth, and interfacial degradation through electrolyte or additive engineering. Study and tailor the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) to enhance long-term stability and cycling performance. Utilize additives, passivation layers, and electrolyte formulations to form stable, robust interphases on lithium metal and other active materials. Cathode and anode development Cathode Materials Development - Research and optimize sodium-ion cathode materials (e.g., layered oxides, polyanionic compounds, Prussian blue analogs) for high specific capacity, structural stability, and rate capability. Anode Materials Development - Investigate hard carbon, soft carbon, and alternative anode systems; evaluate surface modification, pore structure, and pre-sodiation strategies to improve initial Coulombic efficiency and long-term cycling. Testing & Characterization: Conduct electrochemical testing (e.g., EIS, CV, LSV, GITT) to evaluate ionic conductivity, electrochemical window, stability, and interface behavior. Use advanced materials characterization tools (e.g., XPS, SEM, TEM, FTIR, NMR, TOF-SIMS) for interface analysis and post-mortem studies. Collaborate with electrode and cell teams to integrate new electrolytes into lab-scale and prototype cells (coin, pouch, or custom formats). Validate electrolyte performance in full-cell configurations under relevant operating conditions (temperature, current rate, etc.). Technical Reporting & IP Generation: Document experimental results in technical reports and lab notebooks. Contribute to intellectual property development through invention disclosures and patent filings. Present research findings internally and at external conferences or in peer-reviewed journals. Collaboration & Leadership: Work cross-functionally with materials scientists, engineers, and technicians to advance electrolyte technology. Mentor junior scientists or interns and contribute to team development. Specific Skills / Background Ph.D. in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, polymer science or a closely related field. 5+ years of research experience in next generation battery R&D, with a strong focus on electrolyte and interphase reaction. Deep expertise in advanced liquid, semi-solid, polymer and solid based electrolytes tailored for sodium-ion battery and Li-S systems Proficiency in additives design Experience in electrode design, fabrication, including slurry mixing, coating, drying, and calendaring, as well as coin and pouch cell assembly under dry room or glovebox conditions Strong background in electrochemical testing & analysis, materials characterization, and cell prototyping. An Embedded System Senior Staff Engineer will be responsible for the electronic design, firmware design, manufacturing, testing, and support of a real time embedded system used to validate engine control system Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) for both internal GE Aerospace and external customers.
