The United States of America is the second-largest construction market worldwide.
There are over 700,000 construction companies in the country, with their collective, total annual revenues reaching $1.7 trillion dollars in 2016.
And in the United States alone, construction industry expenditures have now exceeded 900 billion U.S. dollars.
New York is currently the American hub for most new construction projects, and topped the list for construction expenditure in American cities in 2013 with $8.5 billion dollars in expenditure. Dallas was second with $5.2 billion in expenditures.
So, what massive construction companies are driving this industry forward in the United States?
The ten largest construction companies in the United States (based on total annual revenues) are:

How We Ranked The Top Ten
In order to take a closer look at each of these companies, we looked at their annual financial reports for 2015 and 2014 online. We compared each company’s total annual revenues for the years of 2015 and 2014.
1.Bechtel Group Inc.
San Francisco, California
Bechtel Group Inc. is a global engineering, construction, and project management company, and they are currently the largest construction firm based in the U.S.
The company is headquartered in San Francisco and was one of only two North American companies to make it into the top fifteen list of the the world’s biggest construction contractors, based on 2014 revenue. Most of the companies in the rankings were Chinese and European contractors.
Bechtel’s 2015 revenues: $32.3 billion
2014 revenues: $37.2 billion
Some of Bechtel’s largest projects include the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Dulles Airport Silver Line expansion (construction on a giant metrorail public transport system).
Fluor Corporation is one of the world’s largest engineering, procurement, construction, maintenance, and project management companies.
Fluor is headquartered in Irvine, California, but has more than 50 company locations around the world.
Fluor’s 2015 revenues: $18.1 billion
2014 revenues: $11.4 billion
Fluor built the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in Alaska, which, at the time, was the world’s largest floating berth and the largest prefabricated pipeline parts.
Another interesting fact is that in 1993, Fluor provided design and construction management services to BMW for the automaker’s first U.S. plant.
3.Chicago Bridge amp; Iron Company
The Woodlands, Texas
Chicago Bridge amp; Iron Company (CBamp;I) is a large American conglomerate engineering, procurement and construction company that specializes in projects for oil and gas companies.
They have major headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas, as well as in The Hague, Netherlands.
CBamp;I’s 2015 revenues: $12.9 billion
2014 revenues: $12.9 billion
CBamp;I is the original provider of the ClariCone solids contact clarifier for potable water and wastewater treatment in Albany, Georgia, as well as constructing the Yankee Stadium Subway Station in New York.
CBamp;I also got involved with disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. They pumped 50 billion gallons of water out of New Orleans in just 17 days, which was two months ahead of original estimates.
Last funny fact: Chicago Bridge amp; Iron Company is not located in Chicago, they do not work on bridges, and they do not generally work with iron.
4.Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.
Jacobs is a diverse provider of technical, professional and construction services, including all aspects of architecture, engineering and construction, operations and maintenance, as well as scientific and specialty consulting.
Jacobs is headquartered in Dallas, Texas as of 2016, and has over 54,000 employees in more than 230 locations spread across the world.
Jacobs 2015 revenues: $12.1 billion
2014 revenues: $12.7 billion
Jacobs helped construct NASA’s Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02), which was installed on the International Space Station in 2011.
The company is structured around four lines of business. Those four lines are Aerospace amp; Technology, Buildings amp; Infrastructure, Industrial, and Petroleum amp; Chemicals.
Kiewit is one of North America’s largest and most respected construction and engineering organizations.
The employee-owned company operates through a network of offices and projects in the United States, Canada, and Australia. They are headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, however.
Kiewit Corporation constructed the TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, which serves as the home for the NCAA’s College World Series. They also lead construction on the Toyota Elephant Passage Exhibit at the Denver Zoo, which went on to receive LEED Platinum certification.

2014 revenues: $10.4 billion
New York City. New York
Turner is a North America-based, international construction services company, and is a leading builder in diverse market segments. They are one of the Big Apple’s leading construction firms, with their headquarters in New York City.
With a staff of more than 5,000 employees, the company completes 10 billion dollars of construction on more than 1,500 projects each year.
One of Turner’s largest projects was the construction of Yankee Stadium, a 1.3 million square foot major league baseball stadium, and home of the New York Yankees.
Turner Construction’s revenues in 2014: $10 billion
The company built the original Madison Square Garden in 1962 as well, which is the home sports stadium to the New York Knicks NBA team and the New York Rangers NHL hockey team. Turner started a full-scale renovation of the facility in 2011 and finished in 2014.
New York City, New York
Skanska is a world leading project development and construction group, and in North America, Skanska is operating within construction, commercial property, and public private partnerships.
Skanska is the fifth largest construction company in the world according to the Construction Global magazine, and their main headquarters in the U.S. is in New York City. There main international headquarters is located in Stockholm, Sweden.
Skanska Construction revenues in the U.S. for 2015: $7.1 billion
Skanska lead the construction project for MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Jets and the New York Giants, that includes seating for 82,500 people.
Other projects Skanska has completed include the World Trade Center Transportation Hub project, MetLife Stadium, and the Mater Dei Hospital.
8.Poole Construction Ltd.
PCL has over 4,400 employees across the United States, Canada and Australia. The organization is active in the commercial, institutional, multi-family residential, renewable energy, heavy industrial, historical restoration, and civil construction sectors.
Their headquarters in the U.S. is located in Denver, Colorado.
The restoration and expansion of the UCLA Pauley Pavilion, home to UCLA’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, is one of their more famous projects.
They also renovated and replaced certain parts of the Tempe Town Lake Downstream Dam in Tempe, Arizona. The company had to remove and replace the existing Bridgestone rubber dam bladders and install a new dam sprinkler system to cool the rubber bladders.

9.Whiting-Turner Contracting Company
Whiting-Turner Contracting has been in business since 1909, and is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s one of the nation’s largest construction management and general contracting companies.
They constructed The Intimidator 305 roller coaster at Kings Dominion amusement park in Doswell, Virginia. The amusement park ride stands at 305 feet tall and reaches top speeds of 91 miles per hour. It’s the second Giga Coaster to be built in North America.
Whiting-Turner 2015 revenues: $5.7 billion
They also constructed Bachelor Enlisted Quarters for the U.S. Navy at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The housing includes construction of four bachelor enlisted quarters for approximately 1,300 soldiers with 650 bedrooms. Each barrack is a four-story, load-bearing, masonry building with an exterior corridor-style construction, and is approximately 72,000 square feet in size.
10.Kellogg, Brown, amp; Root Incorporated
KBR is an American engineering, procurement, and construction company, and formerly a subsidiary of Halliburton.
KBR employs approximately 34,000 people worldwide, with customers in more than 80 countries, and operations in 40 countries. KBR’s headquarters in the U.S. are located in Houston, Texas.
KBR’s 2015 revenues: $5.1 billion
Some of KBR’s biggest projects include the construction of Guantanamo Bay, a United States military prison located within Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, which fronts on Guantánamo Bay in Cuba.
KBR has received many contracts with the U.S. military, including during World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Iraq War. They also constructed a U.S. embassy in Kabul.
