Your Job Might Influence Who You Marry

Have you ever considered how your career choices shape your personal life? Your job not only dictates the hours you spend working and the salary you earn but also influences your conversations around the dinner table. Could it even affect whom you choose to marry?

We were intrigued by this connection, prompting us to analyze data to uncover the marriage patterns among various professions. Specifically, we examined the likelihood of workers in different fields marrying within their profession.

Scroll to the end for the complete list of professions and their corresponding marriage trends, or continue reading for our most captivating insights.

Fascinating Insights

  • And yes, teachers have a strong preference for marrying other teachers.

Methodology

Utilizing the latest U.S. Census PUMS data, we identified the most common occupations among spouses across 1,000 job titles with the highest match rates. This approach allowed us to focus on prevalent job titles, eliminating obscure roles that most Americans would not encounter.

For each occupation, we pinpointed the most common spouse match. Note that while certain jobs (like elementary and middle school teachers) may appear frequently, they are designated as the “most likely to marry” solely for their own category.
