1898 & Co., a part of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking an accomplished Managing Director to lead its successful and growing Northeast Region (NER), which currently consists of 60 employees. The successful candidate will demonstrate proven success in delivering innovative solutions for clients in the consulting and technology spaces, with a strong focus on the energy sector, including both production and delivery.
This position reports directly to the NER Vice President of Operations with a dotted-line relationship to the 1898 & Co. Vice President and General Manager. The Managing Director will be based in either Boston, Wallingford, or Philadelphia and will collaborate closely with local office leadership in Portland, Boston, Wallingford, New York City, Morristown, Philadelphia, and other Northeast locations, as well as with national practice leaders in Energy & Utility Consulting, Technology Consulting, Business Strategy & Transformation Consulting, and Digital & Cyber Consulting, and with 1898 & Co. global practice managers across other Burns & McDonnell regions.
**Responsibilities**
+ Ensure the implementation of Burns & McDonnell's Safety and Quality Control programs across all Northeast offices.
+ Lead business growth by positioning the practice at the forefront of the energy transition, including clean energy, decarbonization, electrification, and grid modernization.
+ Build and maintain trusted relationships with senior leaders across the energy value chain, including utilities, developers, producers, system operators, regulators, and corporate energy buyers.
+ Develop and execute a long-term strategic plan in partnership with regional and national leadership to expand markets and service offerings.
+ Provide leadership and oversight for the NER 1898 & Co. teams in Energy Advisory, Power System Planning, and Technology Consulting.
+ Align regional operations with national 1898 & Co. practice areas: Energy & Utility Consulting, Business Strategy & Transformation, and Digital & Cyber Consulting.
+ Incorporate emerging technologies such as digital twins, AI/analytics, distributed energy resources, hydrogen, and renewable integration into solutions for clients.
+ Represent the firm as a thought leader in industry forums, regulatory discussions, and client advisory boards.
+ Lead business development efforts, including opportunity identification, proposal strategy, client engagement, and contract negotiations.
+ Recruit, develop, and retain staff; mentor future leaders; and build a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing team.
+ Create succession pathways and cultivate the next generation of leaders and practice leaders.
+ Collaborate across Burns & McDonnell practices, including Environmental Services, Transmission & Distribution, Power, and others, to pre-position and deliver integrated solutions.
+ Oversee the execution of projects that consistently meet or exceed client expectations for quality, schedule, and budget.
+ Drive innovation and efficiency by leveraging digital tools, automation, and AI to improve delivery and profitability.
+ Provide financial leadership by developing and then achieving Sales, Revenue, Billable Time, Gross Profit, Effective Labor Multiplier, and Breakeven
+ Multiplier, PDIP, Administrative and Marketing Costs, Equity Charges/Invoicing, Sales Backlog, and Net Income targets.
+ Lead with transparency, accountability, and adaptability to manage organizational change in a fast-growing business.
**Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree in engineering, business, or a related field from an accredited program and 13 years of related professional consulting experience in complex industries are required.
+ Master's Degree/MBA is preferred
+ Minimum 10 years of professional experience in consulting, design, or project management, specifically in the energy sector is strongly preferred.
+ Demonstrated leadership and management experience, with the ability to scale and develop organizations is preferred.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly present complex information to clients, regulators, partners, and employees at all levels.
+ Strong ability to influence, lead, and manage change across a dynamic, growing team.

+ Possesses strong knowledge of commonly used transmission engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the transmission engineering services industry.
+ Additional responsibilities include providing instruction and guidance to less experienced staff members. This position may develop into a leadership role at which point this individual will be expected to lead teams of engineers as well as be a primary interface between Burns & McDonnell Engineers and our clients.
