    Positions for Substitute Bus Drivers have been declared open in the Weber School District transportation department. These are on-call positions for 4.75 hours per day, 9 months per year. Purpose Statement The job of a bus driver was established to transport students over scheduled routes and to/from special excursions; ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensure students' safety during transport, loading, unloading from buses, and any emergency evacuation. Essential Functions Advises students and other passengers of behavior requirements to enforce rules and regulations and maintain safety. Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and potential emergencies to resolve or recommend a resolution to the problem. Assists students and other passengers in providing safe ingress and egress from buses, including emergencies, evacuations, and regular transport. Attends safety meetings, in-service training, etc., to maintain knowledge of and ability to adhere to laws and regulations relating to driving a school bus and meeting State Department of Transportation standards and guidelines for school bus drivers. Cleans the interior and exterior of assigned vehicles to maintain the vehicle's appearance, sanitation, and safety. (e.g., windows, mirrors, sets, floors, ceilings, etc.) Able to climb and descend bus stairs 3 times within 30 seconds to safely operate the bus and evacuate students. Able to drag a 125-pound object on the ground 50 feet within 30 seconds to assist a student in an emergency. Drives school buses to transport students, special education students, and faculty over scheduled routes and to/from school and field trips safely and on time. Fuels assigned vehicles to maintain vehicles in safe operating condition. Informs school personnel, parents, etc., of practices and incidents to provide information for follow-up action and proper procedures. (e.g., rules, regulations, laws, policies, etc.) Inspects assigned vehicles to ensure the vehicle is in a safe operating condition and meets state requirements. (e.g., pre-trip/post checklist, brake system, oil levels, coolant levels, pressure, fuel, etc.) Able to kneel for 10 seconds, turn head to look under the bus, and return to standing within 5 seconds to operate a bus safely. This must be performed twice within 60 seconds. Able to move right foot back and forth between throttle and brake 5 times within 10 seconds while sitting and looking forward to operate the bus safely. Opens and closes the bus door, activates the 4-way hazard lights, and activates the right/left turn signals within 15 seconds while sitting and looking forward to operate the bus safely. Able to pick up and carry a 50-pound object 35 feet within 20 seconds from the bus seat (16 inches) to assist a student in a possible emergency. Prepares documentation to provide written support and convey information for the safety of students, audit trail, time worked, and equipment maintenance. (e.g., incident reports, daily pre-trip inspections report, student count, passenger misconduct, daily mileage, etc.) To maintain safety, supervise students, bus aides, parents, and teachers during transit. Other Functions Assists other personnel as required to support them in completing their work activities. Job Requirements Specific skill-based competencies required to perform the job's functions satisfactorily include adhering to safety practices, administering first aid, operating district vehicles used in transporting students, operating fire extinguishers, two-way communication radios, etc., and preparing and maintaining accurate records. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include safety practices and procedures, State Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code sections applicable to student transportation, city streets, and locations, essential preventive maintenance of Weber School District vehicles, emergency evacuation techniques for regular and special education students including medically fragile, and CPR and basic first aid. Specific ability-based competencies required to perform the job functions satisfactorily include communicating with diverse groups, adapting to changing work priorities, meeting deadlines and schedules, working as part of a team, and setting priorities.
