Summary

Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

As outlined by CLIA, after successful completion of orientation, training and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role-
-1. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results;
-2. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples;

Plates Microbiology samples
Performs testing in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis and Coagulation.
Checks the quality control of each test prior to running and reporting patient results.
Calls worklists on the computer, does editing of results and data enters test results.
Confirms abnormal results prior to releasing and bring any “rare and improbable” test results to the attention of a supervisor.
Processes specimens and logs requisitions as needed.
Reviews daily specimen management reports.
Assists the Laboratory Supervisor in training new employees.
Troubleshoots problems (client, instrument, computer) as needed.
Performs maintenance on the automated Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation and Urinalysis instrumentation as needed.

Job Summary:
General rotating MLS/MLT to work in all the clinical laboratory areas. The MLS/MLT performs a wide array of laboratory procedures in all departments exercising independent judgment and being involved in evaluation of present procedures. Works closely with supervisors and coworkers to complete patient testing, quality control, correlation studies and special projects. Actively participates in specimen collection procedures. Must have good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

Recognizes, evaluates and is able to resolve instrument errors and malfunctions and notifies the department supervisor.
Performs, evaluates, and accepts or rejects quality control values based upon stated guidelines; troubleshoots any unacceptable values, utilizing a basic scientific approach to resolve problems and obtain acceptable quality control. Takes appropriate action when controls remain beyond acceptable ranges.
Analyzes patient and proficiency samples while prioritizing work based upon a status of routine, urgent, or stat to maintain an efficient workflow.
Notifies clinician of any abnormal results that require immediate attention.
Communicates any relevant patient information to other healthcare professionals who require the information.
Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures, when necessary, to obtain blood specimens. Assists in specimen collection when requested.
Evaluates specimen (s) for acceptability for Laboratory testing and takes appropriate action when specimens are not acceptable.
Educates patients and co-workers in correct specimen collection procedures; determines quality and acceptability of specimens collected by patients and co-workers.
Demonstrates good teamwork by providing assistance to co-workers when necessary.
Adheres to all required safety regulations as stated in policies and procedures.
Maintains a safe, organized, and clean workstation.
Assists the supervisor by performing part or all of the supervisor's duties for short periods of time, in the absence of the supervisor or when the supervisor is not available, so that departmental goals and tasks can be met/exceeded.

Job Responsibilities
Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving
Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
Perform and document preventative maintenance and quality control procedures
Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
Assist with processing of specimens when needed
Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or a non-traditional Bachelor's degree that meets local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory testing experience is required OR a MLS degree
ASCP or AMT certification is preferred
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus
High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs

Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervises the daily operation of the assigned department and of the general Laboratory when required.
Reviews the daily patient and quality control logs for errors, omissions and potential problems.
Maintains instrumentation, and coordinates or performs preventive care based on the manufacturers' guidelines.
Recognizes, evaluates, and is able to resolve instrument malfunctions.
Initiates inventory and purchase requisitions for the department, striving to keep expenses within the stated budget and to provide adequate supplies to meet the department's needs.
Reviews and edits (when necessary), annually, all current procedures for clarity, errors, and required changes. Makes a determination on current techniques and apparatus if changes should be made for special conditions or expedite results.
Develops and implements new procedures. Which are clear and concise, and tests that are accurate, precise, reduce turn around time, and are cost effective.
Evaluates and documents employees' performance annually within 2-4 weeks prior to employees' evaluation date. Assesses employees' competency in areas of responsibility.
Assigns proficiency testing to personnel, monitors timeliness of reports, analyzes results and troubleshoots if necessary.
Consults with Pathologist on specimens or results that are unusual or technically more difficult to process or assess.
Based on outcomes of performing testing and employees' performance appraisals, develops education programs to improve employee performance.
Maintains an error file for the department to monitor trends etc., and takes appropriate action when adverse outcomes are detected.
Communicates effectively, both written and verbally, with staff members and co-workers on all pertinent information in a professional manner.
Collects, compiles, documents and reports statistical analysis required by state and federal guidelines (i.e. JCAHO, CAP, FDA, DPH, AABB, CLIA, OSHA, etc).
Prepares for special projects or events, such as computer downtime, community events, implementation of new programs and testing protocols.
Enters and edits ordering information in the computer system on patients and specimens to maintain accurate records of testing and patient billing.
Assists the manager by performing part or all of the manager's duties for short periods of time, in the managers absence or when the managers not available, so that departmental goals and tasks can be met/exceeded.
Prioritizes testing workload and assignments and delegates work to staff within the department. Completes specific assignments and assists staff in completing work when short staffed or under tight deadlines.
Reviews, analyzes, maintains and adjusts staffing to ensure all required tasks are completed.
Responds appropriately and in a timely manner to the requests and needs of patients and customers.
Orients new employees and students to the department. Encourages and trains current employees to improve processes, become more efficient and better meet customer needs. Coaches those who demonstrate a need or are deficient in an area to aid in improvement.
Acquires knowledge through educational in-services or seminars throughout the year. Passes a competence understanding of technological advances, disease processes and regulatory changes. Retains, applies and teaches others on this knowledge.
Evaluates specimens for acceptability for Laboratory testing, and takes appropriate action when specimens are not of acceptable quality.
Continuously assesses and assures cost effectiveness of department operations. Develops cost benefit analysis for testing protocols.
Maintains a safe environment for patients by assuring that sharp objects, toxic substances and other objects potentially harmful to children are not accessible.
Assures that the environment of care or services is free of objects which may contribute to the likelihood of patient falls, slips or trips. Makes readily available assistive devices for ambulation. Complies with policies and procedures relating to gait belts and similar devices.
Is aware of the increased risk of falls, slips, and trips for elderly patients and visitors, and assures that the environment of care or services is free of objects and spills which may contribute to the likelihood of patient falls, slips, or trips.
Is sensitive to the tendency of older patients to have hearing difficulties. In This Role:
You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes, and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries, and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.

What You'll Need to Succeed:
You are able to work the overnight shift
You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred.
It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus.
Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).
