Medical Laboratory Scientist Duties and Responsibilities: Performs routine typing, antibody identification and resolution of immunohematological problems submitted to the lab for study, including written reports and maintenance of records, as directed by the supervisor. Assists transfusion services in the selection of compatible blood for patients and to advise them on technical questions. Displays initiative in the undertaking of these referral cases and maintains a high level of customer service and expertise to the referring transfusion service. Maintains the capabilities of the reference lab by evaluation and preparation of reagent sera, cells, and necessary chemical reagents (including lectins and enzymes), as assigned by supervisor. Performs maintenance of equipment, supplies and glassware, as assigned by supervisor. Performs periodic quality control of reagents and equipment, as assigned by supervisor. Maintains a clean and organized work area and adheres to safety guidelines, policies and procedures. Performs molecular testing, product QC and labeling of blood products. The technologist will be expected to take 24-hour call for emergency consultations with hospitals and staff personnel including, if necessary, laboratory investigation and selection of compatible blood. Performs periodic tests of proficiency and/or competency, submitted by outside organizations (CAP,CDC,AABB, etc.) or prepared by the supervisor. Provides excellent customer service, cultivating positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers and external customers. Exhibits safety, accuracy, respectfulness and efficiencies within specific job tasks. Assists with special projects as assigned. Physical Requirements: Must have visual ability to perform and interpret tests. Must have manual dexterity in manipulation of test materials and equipment, including computer keyboards. Must have the physical ability to work assigned work periods, including typical 8 hour shift plus possible extended hours when on-call, in emergency situations, or when assigned. Job Specifications: BS degree (from accredited school) in medical technology or related field with certification. MLT or other appropriate and related laboratory experience may be acceptable upon demonstration of ability. Experience in blood banking and, specifically, immunohematology, would be required for non-medical technologists. Pre-hiring examinations of technical knowledge and ability may be required. Must have the ability to communicate clearly, being grammatically correct both verbally and in writing. Weekly schedule: 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Be on call during non-office hours for 7 days in a rotating schedule when assigned. Must be able to respond by phone within 15 minutes and report to the center within 30 minutes when on-call. Responsible for the performance of both routine and special test procedures for which qualified by education, training and experience. Accountable for accurate results and the proper use of quality controls, materials and procedures. Must recognize the interdependency of tests and conditions that affect test results. Responsibilities may include:
Assist with field inspections of construction projects, working closely with experienced technicians and engineers to learn proper inspection techniques and procedures.
Perform materials testing under the guidance and supervision of senior technicians, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
Learn to collect samples from job sites and assist in transporting them to the laboratory for further analysis.
Assist in conducting laboratory tests on construction materials, following standardized procedures and utilizing appropriate testing equipment.
Record and document test results accurately, maintaining detailed records of findings and observations.
Support the team in preparing reports and summaries, contributing to the overall project documentation.
Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.

Job Summary - Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/MT)
Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist perform tests on blood and body fluids to determine the presence or absence of disease, monitor response to treatment and aid in health maintenance. Provides guidance and oversight to other testing personnel with lesser credentials. Responsible to troubleshoot and address instrument issues and recognize need for service. Responsible to use critical thinking and clinical knowledge to assess questionable results and correlate with clinical information to determine accuracy.

• Required: Bachelor's Degree must be obtained within 90 days OR High School Diploma or equivalent AND Grandfathered status under CLIA Regulations

This position is responsible for providing accurate, timely and effective provision of laboratory support. The LST II will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service with all internal and external customer interactions. The LST II is responsible as required for the skillful acquisition of laboratory specimens for testing, utilizing safe, accurate, effective, professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies. The LST II will be responsible for all processing, transport and referral of all types of laboratory specimens and reports as required. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: 6 months phlebotomy or clinical laboratory experience of successful completion of a clinical training program.
Other: The LST II position must: satisfactorily complete the specific facility competencies, including but not limited to checklist, written examination, management observation, etc., to be eligible for advancement to the next higher job description.
