As a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE), you will be part of highly creative, efficient team tasked with tackling fascinating and challenging problems building and supporting the operations of Amazon owned data centers. The Amazon Commissioning team (ACx) understands, evaluates, defines and manages the expectations of construction quality in accordance to engineering designs to meet the customer requirements. You will own your projects' successes where you Deep Dived to resolve technical issues and had Bias for Action to address schedule impacts and coordination demands onsite. You will be sharing your lessons learned leading towards team growth and program improvements. You will get the opportunity to provide multi-discipline input into the scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects. During commissioning, you will be continuously auditing Cx vendors' activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements. Following the AWS project reporting format, you will be responsible for regular reporting of commissioning progress and metrics of assigned project to your Regional Commissioning Manager. You will have the opportunity to lead several projects simultaneously to achieve key milestones and deliver data center capacity, while managing project budget as approved by Finance. A day in the life On a typical project, the CxE works across AWS engineering, capacity delivery, operations, and contractor teams to coordinate site activities, prioritize tasks, and ensure each issue has clear path to resolution. The CxE manages the project commissioning vendor whose primary scope is to execute functional tests, identify issues, determine criticality, propose solutions, and document their findings. If project turnover is at risk, the CxE escalates to the appropriate stakeholders. Upon project completion, the CxE will communicate lessons learned to help peers on similar projects in flight and participate in initiatives that drive improvement to the commissioning program. What You Get To Do Design Management Lead (and be the single point of accountability for) the concept design of electrical systems with a focus on reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. Manage third-party consultant teams in developing detailed designs, ensuring continuous improvement to CloudHQ's standard solutions. Oversee design deliverables, project specifications, schedules, and task allocations to ensure high-quality, timely output. Support campus planning, entitlements, design, and permitting processes from site acquisition through construction document delivery on multiple, simultaneous projects Project & Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate closely with customers to integrate their technical requirements into CloudHQ data center designs. Partner with Preconstruction and Construction teams in bid reviews, contract awards, and construction oversight to ensure work meets specifications and offers best value. Liaise with global design colleagues to share best practices and ensure consistency of standards across all CloudHQ developments. Coordinate with the Operations team to ensure designs align with operational best practices and lifecycle cost efficiency. Gather performance feedback from active sites and incorporate insights into updated design standards. Innovation & Standards Development Research emerging electrical and controls technologies, identifying opportunities for improvement. Contribute to CloudHQ's global design standards, ensuring consistency across regions while adapting to local climate, regulatory, and operational requirements. Develop creative solutions and innovations to drive individual and team performance Identify and share lessons learned and integrate improvements into future projects Champion CHQ initiatives on all projects Location: Site-based in Ashburn, VA Travel: Ability to travel to data center sites, client meetings, trainings or conferences as requested and required. Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline. Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred. Experience 5+ years' experience designing electrical systems for data centers or mission-critical facilities, including at least two years in a lead design role. Proven ability to manage external design consultants and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
