Please consider joining our growing team today! Knife River is looking for an experienced Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic to work swing shift for our Idaho division. This position will require you to be able to work both independently and as a team player. Working in extreme weather conditions should be expected. This will be a night shift position. This role is responsible for safely keeping trucks and equipment running and properly maintained. Job Responsibilities: * Must be able to read and understand operating/maintenance manuals and/or technical schematics. * Conduct inspections of company fleet pertaining to on-road and off-road equipment in accordance with company policy and/government jurisdiction regulations. * Maintain compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA, etc. * Interact with vehicle/equipment operators, job site personnel, office personnel, vendors and technical support to help determine the level of service or repair needed for equipment and/or job needs. * Must know how to operate company equipment to diagnose problems to communicate to management. * Operate and maintain overhead and truck counted cranes. * Maintain equipment and tools in a clean, orderly and safe condition. * Perform repairs on vehicles and equipment in adverse weather/environments hot or cold, night or day. * Operates equipment such as forklift or skid loader in a safe and efficient manner. * Organizes shop inventory to be safely and efficiently retrieved or stored. * Complete required paperwork for accounting, payroll, operations or material inventory as directed. * Always work safety and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes and behaviors. * Ability to wear company issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with company policy. * Must work as needed, given the unpredictability of how long jobs or trips will take, including overtime, nights and weekends. * Regular attendance. * Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: * Class C license * Must be self-motivated and a team player with excellent interpersonal skills. * Basic skills for trouble shooting and diagnostics. * Minium 5 years' experience working with semi-trucks and trailers. * Perform the various duties of a mechanic. * Ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous and respectful toward others. Preferred Qualifications: * Class B License with tankers endorsements. * Hazmat * Forklift experience. Physical Requirements: * Requires walking, bending, squatting, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree. * Heavy work-exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move object. * Requires the use of hands for grasping and fine manipulations. * Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. * Head movement/rotation moving head in any direction (up, down, side to side). * Requires climbing in and out of Ready-Mix and Flatbed Trucks multiple times a day. * Wear company issued Personal Protective Equipment * Exposure to dust, fumes and gases. * Exposure to outside working conditions; to cold or hot temperatures. Foster positive customer relations. * Advise customer and/or service writer of any repairs or services which should be performed within the next 3 months. * Participate in training and utilize that training in the course of work. Primary Function The primary function of an employee in this class is to maintain and repair County Heavy Equipment Fleet. This position is differentiated from the Sr. Mechanic position by its emphasis on performing specialized repair and maintenance on heavy equipment and the Landfill Gas Generator system. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Shop Manager. The principal duties of this class are performed in an automotive shop and field environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, power tools and equipment, and related hazards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (will vary by assignment) Performs maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment, including but not limited to heavy-duty trucks and semi-tractors, 10 wheelers, material spreaders, excavators, skid steers, bulldozers, graders, scrapers, snowmobile groomers, underbody blades, dump bodies, snow plows, compactors, backhoes, trailers, electronic message boards and signs, street sweepers and generators. Performs maintenance and repair work on the Landfill Gas Generator system; Performs high-level maintenance, troubleshooting, safety inspections, and repair work on all fleet vehicles, light and heavy equipment, industrial equipment, both gas and diesel, and other related equipment; Fabricates makes alterations, and welds various projects; Troubleshoots and performs inspections and repairs on hydraulic systems, drive trains, transmissions, suspensions, steering systems, heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation systems, electrical systems, brake systems, and emissions and related systems; Services gas and diesel vehicles and equipment with fluids and lubricants, performing tune-ups, clutch and brake adjustments, mounting and balancing tires, and servicing front end steering and suspension systems; Performs troubleshooting and repair work on sophisticated and technical emergency equipment associated with public safety; Performs troubleshooting and repair work on electronic control systems for engines and heavy equipment; Performs troubleshooting and repair work on shop and repair equipment; Evaluate required repair work for completion in-house or by an outside vendor; Provides emergency field service to disabled vehicles; Maintains shop and work area in a neat, clean, and orderly manner; Performs all work duties and activities per County policies, procedures, and safety practices and in accordance with automotive and diesel industry standards, policies, procedures, and safety practices. Other Duties and Responsibilities May be assigned to perform duties with other Department crews; On call for the Landfill Gas System; May be on-call to respond to emergency situations, including vehicle breakdowns; Performs other related duties as required. Competency Requirements Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the diesel mechanic's trade, with particular reference to diesel vehicles and light and heavy equipment; Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic's trade, with reference to fleet vehicles and light and heavy equipment maintenance; Installation, diagnosis, servicing, and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, brake systems, steering and suspension systems, hydraulic systems, power and transmission systems, vehicle electrical systems, computerized engine controls, and related components and systems; Operating and maintenance requirements of heavy duty and mainte nance equipment; Fabrication of components in building police cars and other County equipment; Federal (OSHA) and County heavy equipment and automotive repair and maintenance safety principles and practices including the use of air-powered equipment, lifts, and hoists; Personal computers and software used for maintenance, diagnostic, and repair functions; Recordkeeping procedures. Special Qualifications and Requirements Idaho driver's license with Class A CDL. Hazardous materials and tanker endorsement are required**; and Full Master Mechanic tool set including locking toolbox is required. Tools should be sufficient to perform all the required job functions. R12 and 134A certification is required; and Forklift operator certification is required; and Welding certification is preferred; and MSHA Certification preferred.
