Hardware Engineer (founding)
Electrical engineer internship job in Santa Rosa, CA
Founding Hardware Engineer (Stealth Robotics Startup)
On-Site • San Francisco, CA
About Us
We're a tiny, fast-moving team building autonomous systems for heavy industrial machines. We retrofit existing equipment with a plug-and-play autonomy kit that taps directly into machine controls and layers on a full perception + connectivity stack: multi-sensor vision, LiDAR, high-precision GNSS, IMU, and a low-latency tele-operation network.
In just a few months, we've gone from first prototype to real machines operating on active job sites, with early recurring revenue and a growing pipeline of paid pilots. We're backed by top-tier early-stage investors along with a group of founder-operators who know what it takes to build in the real world.
Our founding team has built and shipped hardware, software, and robotics systems before. We thrive where physical machinery, harsh environments, and rapid iteration collide.
Why Join Us
You want to work on problems that actually matter - fixing how the world builds things. Construction is the backbone of civilization, and it's currently broken. We're here to change that.
You don't want a cushy robotics lab job. You want to build robots in the mud, on real sites, under real constraints. You'd rather spend a week living out of a dusty RV next to a machine you're debugging than polishing a slide deck.
You want to see your designs move 20-50 tons of real hardware. You want to feel the stakes.
You want teammates who operate at founder-level intensity and ownership.
About You
You're a hacker at heart - the kind of person who gets a prototype working before most people finish their planning doc.
You've built something from scratch: a company, a product, a robot, a system - success not required, agency absolutely required.
You work extremely hard, laugh often, and don't mind chaos. You prefer “figure it out now” to “wait for perfect requirements.”
What You'll Own
As a founding Hardware / Mechatronics Engineer, you'll design and build the core systems that enable remote operation, sensing, and autonomy assistance on industrial machines. You'll work across mechanical, electrical, and embedded disciplines, often all in the same day.
System Design & Prototyping
Architect and build tele-operation hardware systems, including power, compute, and control modules for machine retrofits.
Sensor Integration
Integrate and calibrate cameras, LiDAR, radar, GNSS, IMUs, and other sensors using interfaces like GMSL, CAN, and Ethernet.
Electrical & Mechanical Integration
Design robust wiring harnesses, brackets, mounts, and enclosures that survive real-world abuse.
Communication Interfaces
Implement and validate CAN, LIN, J1939, Serial, and Ethernet connections with both existing ECUs and custom control hardware.
Manufacturing & DFM
Work with vendors to bring designs from scrappy prototypes to reliable production, including DFM, testing, and validation.
Testing & Validation
Lead machine bring-up, HIL testing, and on-site debugging alongside software and autonomy engineers.
Documentation & Design
Produce schematics, harness drawings, CAD models, assembly docs, and anything else needed to build and scale the hardware.
Compensation & Support
Base: ~$250-380k
Equity: ~1-3%
Full health/dental/vision, relocation + visa support, downtown SF workspace with full electronics/mech prototyping tools, 401(k), high-spec laptop, and budget for any gear you need.

Electrical Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)
Electrical engineer internship job in South San Francisco, CA
Zipline is on a mission to transform the way goods move. Our aim is to solve the world's most urgent and complex access challenges by building the first instant logistics system that serves all humans equally. Leveraging expertise in robotics and autonomy, Zipline designs, builds, and operates a fleet of cutting edge, autonomous delivery drones. We serve tens of millions of people around the world.
Joining Zipline's Emerging Talent program as an intern is an opportunity to contribute to our promise of building a system that provides equitable access to critical healthcare supplies for millions of people. We believe that internships are more than just opportunities to learn by watching or doing low level tasks. We expect our interns to take on meaningful work that actively contributes to moving Zipline's mission forward, while learning real-world skills that will serve them in their careers for the long term.
Join us, and build the future of logistics with the best humans around!
About the Electrical Engineering Team
At Zipline, the Electrical Engineering Teams are at the heart of our flight and ground systems, responsible for designing, building, and testing all the electronics and software that goes into a scaled instant logistics system. From custom circuit board design, EOL tester development, and sensor integration to real-time flight control and communication systems, the team ensures our platforms operate safely and effectively in some of the most challenging environments in the world. The team works cross-functionally with mechanical, test, embedded, software, and systems engineering teams to create scalable, high-performance products that power life-saving missions every day.
The Role
Leading the way in drone delivery often means exceeding the capabilities of what's available off the shelf, and as a result we are engineering the majority of our system in-house. Doubling down on the reliability of our systems is critical to delivering to our next billion customers--people whose lives will be meaningfully affected by smarter, more equitable access. We are deliberately expanding our electrical design and test capabilities and adding to the ranks of our experienced team to achieve these goals.
We need dedicated engineers to burn down risk and improve reliability in our system like their life depends on it, because others' lives do. Electronics are where software meets the physical world, and so our electrical engineering team has a wide array of engineering skills and works with a variety of different teams. We need people who are comfortable working in different domains, thrive when working on a problem as part of a small group, and are able to communicate technical concepts clearly to a wide variety of stakeholders--software and mechanical engineers, hardware test and manufacturing, and operations and field support, to name a few. Our small team can get a lot done because our team members are strong individual contributors with a good grasp of electrical engineering fundamentals and the ability to define requirements for their systems, rapidly develop creative and simple solutions, and prove with testing that their work meets the rigors and edge-cases of real-world deployment.
What You'll Do
You'll have your own projects but we haven't been saving an "intern project" - you'll be a full member of our team, and like with our other engineers, we'll work with you to find projects that align with your goals and interests and the team's and company's priorities.
Examples of previous projects for interns include:
Prototyping new versions of our battery charging electronics to meet harsher environmental requirements in new countries where we're launching our service
Architecting ground support electronics to assist the air vehicle with take-off and landing
Developing and deploying test equipment such as EOL's for design validation and production
Supporting design validation campaigns to ensure that our avionics products meet design and reliability requirements
Root cause investigation for our products from test, flight, or field issues.
What You'll Bring
Must have at least completed the second year of your Undergraduate studies. Masters and PhD students are also eligible.
You've designed and tested a custom circuit board (it doesn't need to have worked - we'd love to hear about it!)
You've worked on a project in or out of school that moved under its own power (plane, car, boat, quadcopter, rocket, balloon, rocket on a balloon, submarine, rover, etc. - we're not picky)
You've collaborated on the above two things as part of a group - school club, competition team, as part of a job/internship, or just with friends
In your application, we'd love to see either a sample of work you're proud of or a short note about your prior experience and how it relates to the three points above.
Bonus Qualifications:
Experience in Robotics/Automation: Prior exposure to robotics systems, automation, or sensor data (through coursework, projects, or clubs) is a plus.
Software Development: Exposure to object-oriented programming (e.g., C++ or Java) is a bonus.
Cloud Computing/Big Data Tools: Familiarity with cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure) or big data tools (Spark, Hadoop) is helpful but not required.
What Else You Should Know
Our internships are full-time positions, in-person at our South San Francisco or Dallas office. We will host our Summer 2026 interns from May or June to August.
Candidates are limited to three (3) applications within a 30-day period.
The starting cash range for this internship is $38 - 42/ hour. Please note that this is a target, starting cash range for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for this role. The final cash pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, and working location. The total compensation package for each role may also include: a housing stipend; overtime pay; relocation support; paid sick time; and more.
Zipline is an equal opportunity employer and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws or our own sensibilities.
We value diversity at Zipline and welcome applications from those who are traditionally underrepresented in tech. If you like the sound of this position but are not sure if you are the perfect fit, please apply!
Zipline is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities. Please let your point of contact at Zipline know if you require any accommodations throughout your interview process.
