The Financial Aid Counselor reports to the Director of Financial Aid and fulfills a variety of administrative and professional activities designed to serve our student body and meet the strategic enrollment goals of the college. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, counseling students and families, data entry and analytics, researching regulations, reconciling fund balances, evaluating processes and procedures, sending and receiving electronic files and supervising student workers. Candidates for this position will be evaluated on their demonstrated capacity to think critically, exercise good judgment and work independently.
This full-time position offers the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule after the completion of the training period.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Aid Counseling & Communication
Works with new and continuing students and their parents regarding the application for and renewal of financial aid as it pertains to accessing enrollment and satisfying their student account balances
Participates in monitoring financial aid email account and addresses communications accordingly
Reviews and packages new and continuing students recognizing the difference between consistent administrative functions and unique professional judgment that may be needed case by case
Reviews and update financial aid forms and web presence
Financial Aid Administration
Collects documentation from students and parents to ensure compliance with federal, state and institutional awarding guidelines
Reviews and processes Federal Direct Loan Programs on behalf of eligible students and/or eligible parents
Submits, receives and reconciles electronic records in administration of federal financial aid programs exercising accuracy and time management skills
Processes Return to Title IV (R2T4) calculations as a result of student withdrawals
Monitors Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for students and reviews and processes appeals and communications
Manages state grants, confirming eligibility, requesting disbursements from state agencies, responsible for reconciliation and coordinating periodic state audits
Work with a variety of alternative loan programs and third-party scholarship agencies to secure funding for students
Assists with Admission events designed to recruit and yield prospective students
Designs and delivers financial literacy presentations used to educate new and continuing students, college staff and faculty and/or other community audiences
Collaborates with appropriate personnel in other college departments including, but not limited to, Academic Advising, Bursar, Registrar and Student Central to carry out financial aid processes and properly advise students
Supports and assists the Director of Financial Aid in streamlining processes, utilizing technology, assisting in data collection for annual audits and other inquiries
Researches financial aid regulations to ensure compliance and maintain institutional eligibility
May supervise student workers

Summary
Assist the Office of Admission and Financial Aid in support of the University's effort to attract qualified students through the timely and effective administration of student financial aid and admission counseling. Responsible for managing the admission-related loan counseling process for accepted students. Assist with institutional scholarship program management. Reports to the Financial Aid Director. Collaborate with the Senior Executive Director for admission counseling efforts.
Principal Functional Responsibilities
Financial Aid Loan Counseling and Shared Program Management: Lead the planning, development, and implementation of accepted student financial aid loan counseling in alignment with institutional goals and regulatory requirements. Assist in the administration of financial aid loan programs for newly accepted students, including federal and private loans. Meet directly with newly accepted students. Assist in the management of the preferred lender list and private loan comparison tools. Admission Counseling: Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of an accepted student financial counseling program. Support prospective and accepted students through recruitment into the initial term of enrollment with an emphasis on gap funding counseling through private loans. Work extensively with the admission staff to cross-train and collaboratively deliver timely and relevant counseling to promote accepted student enrollment. Meet with prospective and accepted students and families to present educational funding options and facilitate private loan applications.
Reporting and Data Processing: Key user or primary administrator of one or more admission and financial aid systems. Analyze reporting needs and collaborate with staff to create reports that improve operations and assist with decisions. Compile mid-year and year-end reports to evaluate preferred lenders.
Other Duties: Represent the admission and financial aid office on university and community committees in support of the director. May assist the directors with attending ongoing training and professional development to stay current with regulations and best practices. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree

FINANCIAL AID ADVISOR - CAMPUS
The Financial Aid Advisor (FAA) performs administrative work directly related to the administration of financial aid programs. The FAA coordinates and executes state, federal and institutional financial aid programs in an ethical, expeditious and efficient manner, to provide the greatest possible benefit to both the student and college. Duties are performed in a customer environment requiring independent judgment and decision making.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Administer all financial aid programs supported by Valley College and executed at the local campus level in accordance with all state and federal requirements and institutional policies and procedures.
Interview all students requiring financial aid assistance, prepare financial aid packages, including refinancing.
Develop new financial aid resources and act as a liaison between the school and agencies.
Remain technically current in new government and company regulations and procedures by attending sponsored financial aid workshops and seminars and by participation in local financial aid associations when feasible. Apprise management of updates and changes.
Perform financial aid orientations and student financial counseling.
Ensure all appropriate financial aid accounting procedures including accounting procedures associated with federal funded programs, are implemented and maintained in accordance with corporate and federal requirements.
Coordinate and administer collection activities for financial aid programs.
Administers all reporting functions to ensure all Valley College reporting requirements are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Conduct entrance and exit interviews and practice timely default management.
Assist with the development and revision of corporate financial aid policies.
Special projects as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position operates in a professional office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The employee must be able to:

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time, salaried position. The standard work week is Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION and PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE
A Baccalaureate degree (or higher) in Business Administration or related field is preferred. This individual needs to have good interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively in a customer environment. A combination of related experience and education may be acceptable should the incumbent not hold a baccalaureate degree. This position requires that the incumbent maintains a high level of professionalism and confidentiality when working with students.
If the incumbent has student federal loans (Title IV): The incumbent must maintain all their student federal loans in good standing (no delinquencies or defaults). Failure to do so may result in restricted access to resources essential to conducting job responsibilities and may result in disciplinary action up to termination of employment with the college.
