DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The Corrections Officer Trainee participates in formal training sessions and on-the-job assignments to develop skills and techniques in the custody and supervision of inmates in a state correctional facility. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a corrections officer. Work in this position involves the care, custody, control, and non-professional counseling of inmates.
Duties and other information for this position include:
Direct and indirect contact with inmates and visitors.
Directing inmates and maintaining security in cellblocks, housing units, cottages, work areas, dining, and recreation areas, by monitoring the movement and activities of inmates.
Observing inmates and inmate behavior by making periodic and unannounced rounds, head counts, and security checks, and reporting anything unusual to a corrections officer.
Work a 40-hour work week with shifts to be determined, work any shift and work in all areas of the institution as assigned, work overtime as required by operation necessities and emergencies, work on those weekends and holidays which occur during your normal work schedule, and report to work under adverse weather conditions.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Participating in formalized instruction in the areas of sociology, psychology, court procedures, self-defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and the facility's organizational structure.
Providing advice and guidance in assisting inmates in their adjustment to and participating in correctional processes and the Department's rules and regulations.
Prepare written reports.
Respond to emergency situations.
Uniforms provided.
Eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.

Organizational Location: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations, within the 25 FOD locations and are assigned based on the needs to the agency ERO Field Offices.
As a Deportation Officer at the Entry Level you will work with more experienced officers to provide support and perform the following segments of work related to immigration investigation, custody, identification and location, arrest, prosecution and deportation:
* Assist with the apprehension of individuals that are accused of violating immigration or related laws;
* Assist with preparing investigative reports in sufficient detail and accuracy to support possible prosecution and/or administrative action;
* Perform law enforcement support duties such as taking fingerprints and photographs;
* Conduct routine interviews using various law enforcement methods and techniques (e.g., observation, interviews, document inspection, data analysis, etc.) to respond to a variety of immigration inquiries and complaints; and
* Document, transport, deport, and/or escort criminal and non-criminal migrants under the guidance of a more senior officer.
* Initiate both criminal and civil prosecutions and deport migrants to foreign countries as well as performing various aspects of custodial operations related to civil immigration enforcement.

You qualify for the GL-5 grade level if you possess one of the following:
Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible general experience, one (1) year of which was equivalent to at least a GS-4, in the Federal government. The experience must demonstrate the ability to: analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; plan and organize work; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and deal effectively with others in person-to-person situations. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical, or other responsible work is qualifying if it provided evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position. * Class standing in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses;
* Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
* 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
* 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
* Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of successfully completed graduate education in an appropriate discipline and experience as described above. To meet total qualification requirements for GS-7, first determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required; then determine the education as a percentage of the education required; and then add the two percentages. The total combination must equal at least 100 percent of the requirement.
A college transcript(s) is required if claiming education in lieu of experience and must show your grade point average for your undergraduate study, including all transferred courses. GPAs are rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Abilities Assessment: All applicants must pass the PAA prior to graduation from FLETC. The PAA consists of a 1.5 mile run in 14 minutes and 25 seconds, 220 sprint in under 47 seconds and 22 push-ups in 60 seconds.
Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess a valid state driver's license and be able to drive an automobile or light truck. You may also need to obtain and maintain a state commercial driver's license to operate an over-the-road bus capable of transporting 30 or more persons.
Age Restrictions: The date immediately preceding an individual's 40th birthday is the last day to be referred for selection (PL 93-950 and 100-238). However, the age restriction may not apply to individuals who are qualified preference-eligible veterans or who are currently or have previously served in a federal civilian (not military) law enforcement position covered by 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or 5 U.S.C.§ 8412(d).
Training: Candidates selected will be required to attend and successfully complete the ERO Basic Immigration Law Enforcement Training Program located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). DO training is approximately 50 days in duration. Please note, in accordance to ERO Training policy 11158; no one will be permitted to attend more than two ERO Academy training sessions.
NOTE: Employees who do not successfully complete basic immigration law enforcement training and are terminated from training are ineligible to return to the ERO Academy for training, unless selected as a law enforcement officer under a different vacancy announcement. No one will be permitted to attend more than two ERO Academy training sessions.

This is corrections security and custody work, at the full performance level, ensuring the care, custody and control of inmates in a County correctional facility. Work includes immediate responsibility for enforcing rules and regulations, maintaining order and discipline among inmates, escorting inmates, and preventing escapes; work also involves operation of electronic control panels and other security equipment, as well as computers. A position in this class reports to supervisory-level corrections personnel.

Manages housing unit operations which includes monitoring inmate activities in the dayroom and outdoor exercise yard; supervising the distribution of meals, medication, commissary, and laundry; conducting a physical count of all inmates; issuing movement passes; confiscating and accounting for inmate property and conducting rounds, medical checks and psychiatric checks.
Responsible for the cleanliness of all areas of the institution and conducts daily inspections of dayrooms, cells, and all other working areas. Assures all inmates maintain an acceptable level of hygiene.
Monitors and controls all movement in the facility through the proper operation of electronic door control panels.
Maintains an accurate log of all activities, writes incident reports, inmate misconducts reports, and reports all information through the chain of command.
Communicates professionally and respectfully with inmates, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Calls and responds to security and medical emergencies. Administers first aid/CPR and follows the Use of Force policy when handling situations.

Starting Salary: $19 / hour Responsible for all initiatives and daily tasks associated with loss prevention and safety management as directed by Loss Prevention Manager to ensure the safety and well being of all employees and company assets.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure full knowledge of and exemplify LP/safety policy, procedure and standards.
Train store employees on LP policy and procedure and ensure compliance.
Train store employees on safety policy and procedure and ensure compliance.
Detect and capture shoplifters according to company protocol.
Monitor potential employee theft suspicions. Partner with LP Manager to address concerns.
Prepare incident reports, accident reports and investigative reports according to company guidelines.
Assist management in the investigation of employee policy & procedure violations.
Communicate and support all initiatives surrounding shortage reduction including, but not limited to audits, inventory counts, etc.
Offer recommendations and solutions to potential loss/safety concerns.
Ensure complete confidentiality with regard to current and past investigations and outcomes.
Special projects as assigned.
Respond to alarm calls as needed and required in order to resolve all issues causing them.
Qualifications:
Ability to physically apprehend and assist in the detention of shoplifters as required.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
Basic knowledge of computer applications; i.e.: Excel, Word, and Power Point.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be able to work for extended periods at a desk on a computer or standing/walking as required.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
Experience in conducting investigations preferred.
1-2 years of retail Loss Prevention experience preferred.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The Corrections Officer Trainee participates in formal training sessions and on-the-job assignments to develop skills and techniques in the custody and supervision of inmates in a state correctional facility. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a corrections officer. Work in this position involves the care, custody, control, and non-professional counseling of inmates.
Duties and other information for this position include:
Direct and indirect contact with inmates and visitors.
Directing inmates and maintaining security in cellblocks, housing units, cottages, work areas, dining, and recreation areas, by monitoring the movement and activities of inmates.
Observing inmates and inmate behavior by making periodic and unannounced rounds, head counts, and security checks, and reporting anything unusual to a corrections officer.
Work a 40-hour work week with shifts to be determined, work any shift and work in all areas of the institution as assigned, work overtime as required by operation necessities and emergencies, work on those weekends and holidays which occur during your normal work schedule, and report to work under adverse weather conditions.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Participating in formalized instruction in the areas of sociology, psychology, court procedures, self-defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and the facility's organizational structure.
Providing advice and guidance in assisting inmates in their adjustment to and participating in correctional processes and the Department's rules and regulations.

Shift differential is up to $1.25 per hour.

PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
