Utilizes computerized robotics, column and array-based sequencers, various electrophoresis and hybridization equipment, and photographic and digital imaging equipment to perform and document testing. Analyzes and interprets the results obtained. Performs PCR to amplify regions of nucleic acid of interest using protocols established in the laboratory. Pours and runs (via electrophoresis) agarose gels to assess the adequacy of the PCR products obtained. Documents the results utilizing digital and/or photographic imaging systems. If PCR reactions are not successful, performs problem-solving steps to determine the cause of the failure and corrects the problem. Must repeat PCR reactions on individual samples as required to obtain adequate results. PCR must be performed without contamination. Perform all PCR reactions with contamination free controls. Correctly tracks nucleic acid/PCR samples to maintain chain of identity and prevent sample mix-up. Achieves the laboratory standards for turn-around time. Documents the results of testing in patient folders and laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Presents testing results to the laboratory director for verification and final reporting. Enter laboratory orders into Composite Health Care System (CHCS). Perform timed blood collection procedures, such as glucose tolerance tests. Utilizes glucose point of care glucometer which provides immediate glucose results in evaluating the patient's condition before administering the glucose load. Collect blood specimens from ambulatory or bed patients via venipuncture, finger, or infant heel stick, as appropriate, using standardized procedures. For venipuncture specimens, this entails the application of a tourniquet, selection of the proper vein, disinfection of the puncture site, and entering the vein using a sterile blood collection and vacutainer. The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, capillary tube, pipette, or glass slide for blood smears. Dress the skin puncture site after blood collection. Carefully observe the patient for any sign or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and take appropriate first aid measures to prevent injury and stabilize the patient. Verifies specimen labels, properly label collected blood specimens with appropriate patient identification information, and deliver specimens to the Laboratory's Central Operations section within the established specified time frame. Provide immediate care to patients by recognizing adverse reactions to procedures and instituting immediate corrective measures. Mentors Phase II laboratory students and medical technology interns in phlebotomy. Perform applicable documentation. Maintain blood collection tray in a clean, hygienic state and replenish blood collection supplies as needed. Maintain supply levels for drawing stations and shelves on a daily basis. Perform clerical duties in Laboratory Central Operations. Answer telephones, look up test results in the laboratory computer, and fax test results to ordering healthcare providers/physicians. Process patient demographic data into the laboratory automated data system (i.e. CHCS or manual system). Identifies and corrects patient data errors. Verifies physician, patient information, ward and clinic locations, and provider codes for entering accession information into the computer terminal, and work with wards, clinics, and other medical personnel to resolve missing or incorrect data. Receive telephone calls and visitors to the laboratory. Determine nature of call or visit. Direct callers or visitors to appropriate personnel. Personally provide the information requested when routine or procedural matters of the laboratory are involved. Apply established guidelines concerning the release of information on test results, adhering to the provision to the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Contractor personnel shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity. Contractor personnel shall maintain open and professional communication with members of the MTF staff. Complaints validated by the Flight Commander/Medical Director shall be reported in writing to the Contract Administrator and the Contractor for action. Failure of the Contractor to correct validated complaints raised by the MTF staff and the Contracting Officer (CO) will be considered a failure to perform. Contractor personnel shall prepare all documentation (to include patient records) to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient/donor health records. Qualifications Degree: Certificate. Education: High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS or two part Phlebotomy program. Experience: A minimum of three years of experience is required within the previous 48 months. The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, capillary tube, pipette, or glass slide for blood smears. Dress the skin puncture site after blood collection. Carefully observe the patient for any sign or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and take appropriate first aid measures to prevent injury and stabilize the patient. Verifies specimen labels, properly label collected blood specimens with appropriate patient identification information, and deliver specimens to the Laboratory's Central Operations section within the established specified time frame. Provide immediate care to patients by recognizing adverse reactions to procedures and instituting immediate corrective measures. Contractor personnel shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity. Contractor personnel shall maintain open and professional communication with members of the MTF staff. Complaints validated by the Flight Commander/Medical Director shall be reported in writing to the Contract Administrator and the Contractor for action. Failure of the Contractor to correct validated complaints raised by the MTF staff and the Contracting Officer (CO) will be considered a failure to perform. Contractor personnel shall prepare all documentation (to include patient records) to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient/donor health records. Qualifications Degree: Certificate. Education: High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS or two part Phlebotomy program. Experience: A minimum of three years of experience is required within the previous 48 months. Certified phlebotomy technicians with less than three years of laboratory experience would be considered if prior military service National Guard, Reserve or internship at this facility.
