Phlebotomists are responsible for obtaining blood specimens and collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists have a strong eye for detail, excellent interpersonal skills, proficient verbal and written English skills, and the ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.
Responsibilities for a phlebotomist include but are not limited to:
Preparing patients before drawing blood
Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
Accurately updating patient information in the organization's database
Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing
Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing
Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory
Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices.
Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
