A Cytotechnologist utilizes knowledge and anatomical laboratory experience to receive accession and prepare cytological specimens for examination. The Cytotechnologist performs the analyses of cytopathology specimens in an accurate and timely manner. This position requires the exercise of independent judgment, timeliness, accuracy and responsibility with minimal supervision by the director or supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Cytology Specimen Prep Duties and Technologist Responsibilities
Prepares cytologic specimens for analysis
Assures proper maintenance of equipment
Verifies and assures accuracy of specimen and patient information.
Enters information into computer reporting system according to standard laboratory procedures
Performs all appropriate laboratory technical procedures including specimen prep, staining, destaining and restaining and screening with little or no supervision
Screens specimens and dots slides as appropriate for pathologist
Performs testing and reports results on laboratory specimens
Performs all duties associated with FNA specimen collection, processing and screening
Meets the diagnostic performance guideline established by the medical director
Performs job duties in an honest, punctual and ethical manner
Reviews and updates all cytology related procedures and procedure manuals on an annual basis and prepares for review by the Medical Director
Performs quality control and maintains all appropriate documentation
Achieves minimum daily workload productivity as established by the Medical Director
Adheres to NYS screening guidelines for cytotechnologists and maintains proper documents pertaining to number of slides screened
Maintains competency and assumes responsibility for continuing education relevant to responsibilities
As a Cytotechnologist II, participates in the quality control program by re-screening negative pap smears to validate test results
Demonstrates technical skills necessary to perform specimen collection and triage
Accepts and identifies specimens received in the laboratory
Checks specimen container and requisition for proper identification and specimen transport condition
Enters patient demographics and specimen information into the pathology information system.
Selects paperwork required to ensure specimen identification, specimen processing and billing
Verifies insurance information and retrieves missing information.
Demonstrates the ability to perform gross examinations of specimens
Checks and maintains accurate specimen identification
Determines correct fixatives for requested procedures
Weighs and measures specimens
Selects tissues and cassettes for processing and stores residual tissues using methods that insure preservation
Records required information necessary for subsequent procedures such as embedding and cutting
Dictates gross descriptions clearly, accurately and according to guidelines of the department
Photographs specimens correctly
Implements proper tissue processing procedures
Follows decalcification procedures
Demonstrates the ability to process Heme/Path bone marrow specimens
Demonstrates the ability to prepare reagents for bone marrow Wright Giemsa stain
Performs Wright Giemsa stain on bone marrow smears
Demonstrates the ability to coverslip and prepare bone marrow slides to be submitted to the pathologist
Other Lab Duties
Assists the Histotechnologists with slide labeling as necessary
Assists with cover slipping and staining procedures as necessary
Maintains laboratory equipment, including monitoring and changing reagents as necessary
Maintains any temperature or other laboratory related charts as requested
Performs other qualified laboratory duties as requested by supervisor
Assures adequate laboratory supply inventory
Thoroughly, accurately and legibly documents test results
Demonstrates and uses the applicable computer systems
Reviewed the policy for Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan
Understands the proper use of all personal protective equipment necessary to perform all assigned duties.
Adheres to all policies and procedures regarding precautionary measures taken to minimize risk of bloodborne pathogen transmission.

Job Description:
To coordinate the activities in the Nursing Skill Laboratory including scheduling, record keeping, maintenance of equipment and supplies and assisting faculty and students in the use of lab resources. Writes/updates lab policies and SOPs as necessary.

Reviews lot to lot studies, linearities, and instrument correlations as needed
Reviews calibrations and Quality control monthly
Acquires appropriate proficiency testing material that meets NYSDOH guidelines. Reviews, results, and provides corrective action as needed.
Responsible for pulling monthly statistics of volume of testing performed.
Ensures competencies are performed by all staff on hire, in six months, and annually
Ensures licensed medical technicians and technologists have documented 12 hours of continuing education annually

Performs specimen audit for each section of the laboratory and annual review of each audit performed to ensure corrections maintained

* Communicate (via e-mail/phone) to students relevant reminders regarding deadline updates.
* Update and maintain accurate student records/correspondence/evaluations.
* Update, oversee, and follow up on all compliance standards.
* Review NYSED, CDC, OSHA and other government agencies routinely to assure compliance.
* Collaborate with the Department Chair and course instructors to assist in securing ongoing and new clinical sites.
* Assist with creating and maintaining clinical placement schedules.
* Serve as a liaison to students for documentation and accesses required for clinical placement.
* Assist with all documentation required for student and adjunct placement.
* Participate in new student orientations.
* Continue maintenance of clinical placement processes within the shared network drive to store information useful to entire department.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Registerd Nursing pursuing completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
* Possess a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in New York or be eligible for such.
* Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in clinical nursing in direct patient care as a registered nurse (will consider one year with other comparable experience). Must be competent in nursing skills, adult teaching/learning skills and use of technology. Experience with Google Suite or Microsoft Office desired.

The Nursing Laboratory Coordinator for the Skills Lab and Simulation Lab is a 12-month OPAP Level IV position that will plan, operate, coordinate, and oversee the nursing skills lab and simulation related to the Associate Degree Nursing program. The coordinator will work collaboratively with the Nursing Department Chairperson and Nursing faculty and other health program faculty to ensure safe and effective use of the simulation lab and skills lab facilities.
The coordinator will also assist the Nursing Department Chairperson or Clinical Coordinator with student clinical compliance. This position reports to the Department Chair of Nursing and/or lead faculty of Nursing Laboratories.
Key Responsibilities: Daily operations of the Nursing Simulation Center:
Manage the area to greet students and faculty and direct them accordingly. Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls requiring the use of judgment and the interpretation of policies & procedures.
Monitors daily operation and keeps accurate records of use of the of Simulation lab and provides updates to Department Chair as needed.
Schedules and coordinates training sessions, clinical lab sessions, and individual requests from faculty, staff and students.
Assists faculty with set up/ break down and running of simulations.
Fosters positive work environment within department as well as throughout college.
Provides instruction for cross training of staff within department.
Assists with managing and scheduling work study students; delegate's responsibilities to work-study student as appropriate.

Assist and Support in simulation and clinical activities in the Nursing Simulation Center and Skills Lab:
Provides daily on-site guided practice sessions and lab usage instructions for students.
Establishes clinical skill lab stations; sets up and removes equipment and supplies to accommodate the needs of over faculty and students.
Set up for simulation and clinical skills sessions and ensures all materials needed are available throughout clinical and practice sessions. Assist in simulation & clinical skills activities.
Develops instructional materials regarding the set-up and usage of a wide variety of clinical models and manikins.
Maintain equipment and supply inventory for the labs. Creates supply orders of hardware, software, and clinical skills equipment and supplies. Reports need for replenishment to lead instructors of Nursing Skills Laboratory.
Maintains currency in hospital policies and procedures related to direct patient care.

Collaboration with internal and external constituents:

Assist with all documentation required for student and adjunct placement.
Participate in new student orientations.

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Registerd Nursing pursuing completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
