The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, a part of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, within the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus, seeks qualified applicants for the full-time position of Plant Science Research and Education Facility Turfgrass Research Technician (Laboratory Technician 1). Supervised by the Plant Science Research and Education Facility Manager and the Department Head, this position provides technical assistance to faculty and researchers in establishing and maintaining turfgrass for research, teaching, and outreach. Duties also include maintenance and repair of equipment associated with field and greenhouse projects as well as pesticide applications. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Establish, maintain, and renovate turfgrass areas for research, teaching, and outreach activities. Prioritize cultural management of turfgrass research plots in consultation with researchers and farm manager. This includes mowing, irrigating, fertilizing, cultivating, and pest scouting. Prepare and apply pesticides as needed to manage weeds, insects, and diseases of turfgrasses in research fields and greenhouses. Identify turfgrass species and diagnose common weed, insect, and disease problems. Operate equipment, instrumentation, and related components including computer software and systems. Assist in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing gas powered equipment. Calibrate field equipment to ensure accurate application of fertilizers and pesticides. This multidisciplinary center houses the Novecare consumer products division labs, as well as R&I function labs specializing in analytical, microbiology, and physical chemistry. The HPC lab is dedicated to designing and testing formulations within its focus areas. This position offers the candidate valuable hands-on experience in aqueous formulations, surface modification, beauty cleansing, and relevant analytical techniques, providing an excellent introduction to these key fields. Experience in formulation of home / personal care products will be a plus. We count on you to: * Work alongside a senior scientist to develop novel base formulations for long-lasting hard surface cleaning, with a focus on biodegradability and the creation of microplastics-free products for our portfolio. * Formulation preparation and application testing of treated test substrates (polymeric, stainless steel or ceramic) for assay of cleaning performance and film appearance according to standardized protocols. * Plan and execute experiments, stability tests, setting milestones, driving projects to completion and creating charts and tables that clearly represent the outcomes; * Periodically summarize results in technical reports and discuss conclusions with the project team; * Housekeeping * Understand and follow key Syensqo safety policies and procedures for the site, including but not limited to the following: Emergency response / Crisis management / evacuation guidelines.
