In 1893, The Gardner’s donated their 782-acre farm to the Red Cross to stage emergency supplies and to create a training school.
When the merger occurred in 1901, United States Steel was determined to eliminate the unions.
The 1916 strike at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube plant was declared on January 6 by the 8,000 employed workers, seemingly as a result of wage demands as well as the employees wretched housing conditions.
A Christmas gift from Barton is one of the items as well as unique quilt created in 1917 to support the men involved in World War I.
In the 1920’s, New Castle enjoyed its greatest prosperity.
Youngstown Strike (left) is one of Gropper’s most compelling works, apparently prompted by the extended strikes staged in 1936-37 by workers at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, Youngstown, Ohio.
In 1998, the City of New Castle was a host city for the History Channel Great Race.
The city also proudly celebrated its 200th birthday in 1998 with a downtown fireworks festival that attracted over 30,000 people.
