JOB SUMMARY
The Metadata & Discovery Librarian supports student success and lifelong learning by ensuring library resources are accurately described, easily discoverable, and consistently accessible. This position is responsible for creating and enhancing metadata, managing discovery services, and maintaining library systems that enable seamless access to both physical and digital collections.
The librarian contributes to policy development, provides reference and circulation support, and helps ensure smooth daily operations in the Library Director's absence.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICIATIONS
Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), Library and Information Studies (MLIS), Information Science (MSIS), Library Science (MLS), or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
Minimum one (1) year of experience in cataloging, metadata, library systems, or related technical services work. A combination of relevant coursework, internships, graduate assistantships, or supervised field experience may count toward this requirement.
An additional two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following: cataloging, metadata, library systems, technical support, library administration, access services, information literacy instruction, or research assistance.
Demonstrated knowledge of national cataloging and metadata standards.
Knowledge of and experience with a cloud-based library services platform.
Knowledge of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is valued.
Knowledge of web accessibility and ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliance standards is valued.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
METADATA CREATION & CATALOGING (35%)
Improve existing records through metadata enhancement and quality control projects.
Support long-term resource discoverability by maintaining accurate and consistent metadata.
Perform original and copy cataloging for physical and electronic materials in multiple formats.
Ensure compliance with national and local metadata standards, including MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging), RDA (Resource Description and Access), AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules), DCRM (Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials), NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Program), LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), and LCC (Library of Congress Classification).
LIBRARY SYSTEMS AND DISCOVERY SERVICES (25%)
Administer and configure Alma and Primo to support institutional needs, optimize workflows, implement enhancements, and coordinate system updates.
Oversee metadata display, indexing, and discovery layer optimization to improve user access and search functionality.
Maintain LibApps and other library software; coordinate updates and provide staff training on new features.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to database access, authentication, and catalog functionality.
Collaborate with IT (Information Technology) staff and vendors to support reliable on-campus and remote access to electronic resources.
ACCESS SERVICES (20%)
Deliver circulation and user support services, including check-in/out, account assistance, and technical troubleshooting.
Create a welcoming environment by helping users navigate library systems, collections, and services.
Provide first-tier research and reference assistance at the service desk and through online channels.
Provide course-integrated research support upon request, including the development of online learning objects, research guides, and instructional tutorials.
COLLECTION MANAGEMENT (15%)
Develop and maintain procedures for managing the print collection.
Support collection evaluation and maintenance efforts, including deselection, inventory, and usage analysis.
Maintain accurate records of missing and lost materials and coordinate with faculty for collection input.
Train and supervise student workers and library staff assisting with stacks maintenance tasks.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (5%)
Serve on college committees.
Participate in professional development activities.
Promote library resources and services.
Assist the Library Director with collection statistics and reporting.
Provide support for government documents workflows, including inventory updates, routine maintenance of the collection, and compliance with federal depository regulations.
Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB LOCATION
This role is an on-site position primarily located on the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, TN. Travel is required within the college's five-county service area including travel for statewide meetings, national conferences, etc.

Responsibilities:
Interacts directly with library users of all ages at the circulation and reference desks. Uses the library automated circulation system to circulate materials and perform a variety of clerical tasks.
