Role: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Durham NC
Responsibilities
The position will serve as a contractor supporting existing design engineering colleagues in project execution activities, which will include the following types of activities: 3D CAD modeling in Solidworks, creation of part/assembly drawings in Solidworks, assisting with procurement of prototype parts, assembly and testing of prototype systems, processing/reviewing test data, etc. The position will be responsible for spending time in the lab disassembling and building up assemblies to better learn and understand the mechanics, operation and functionality of these components and assemblies. This engineer will also help with general engineering needs within the mechanical design engineering group, as time permits and needs come up during the term of the contract.
Produce technical drawings, BOM's and product documentation in collaboration with the CAD and PLM team
Perform calculations in support of component design and part selection
Support building and testing of prototypes systems in a laboratory environment
Assist with coordination of engineering and testing activities within and across R&D test labs
Communicate and present information in a clear and concise manner to key stakeholders in a cross functional matrixed organization
Contribute to problem solving and technical support, including design updates of equipment, process development and related documentation.
Requirements
Requirements Bachelor's or Master's degree with a concentration in Mechanical / Electromechanical Engineering
Demonstrated experience with SolidWorks 3D Engineering Design Software (Solidworks CSWA certification or equivalent skills is a plus)
Experience with industrial Pneumatic or Hydraulic systems is a plus

**Responsibilities**
The **Mechanical, Process, Structural or Civil Engineering** interns will perform meaningful work in support of the SRMC organization. The selected **Mechanical, Process, Structural or Civil Engineering** interns will be assigned to 1 of 4 SRMC production facilities or Design Engineering where the interns, as part of a mechanical or structural-structural Mechanics Engineering group will:
- Work daily on various technical topics with an engineering mentor
- Provide assistance to system engineers to assess system health, prepare/review design changes, determine replacements for obsolete parts, troubleshoot system equipment, review work packages, support/resolve installation technical issues.
- Work with data management/organization to assist in developing tools associated with system health, and spare parts.
Additional Information:
The internship is expected to be a 10-12 week period from May 2026 until the end of July 2026. Housing is not provided, but reasonable rentals may be available through local university student housing offices. The selected candidate will be responsible for their own transportation.
A 40-hour work week is set and scheduled by the individual departments. SRMC utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), etc. Each workday has a 30-minute lunch. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly rate; no summer interns will be assigned to shift work; overtime is not available; Interns will be paid for site holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th) as applicable.
Assignments will be located in SRMC facilities in Aiken, SC. Public transportation is not available, and interns will be required to arrange their own transportation. A valid Driver's License, Registration and proof of automobile insurance is required for driving on the Savannah River Site.

Essential Functions
* Learn about managing the project budget by controlling expenditures, coordinating owner and subcontractor billings, identifying work not covered by subcontractor, and ensuring successful office support related to overall cost and schedule.
* Learn about Safety and Quality Control programs and how to coordinate actions to address problems.
* Learn about company procedures, the correspondence process and handling, etc. with the Office Manager in accordance with the Operations Manual.
* Learn how to review and process submittal data and shop drawings.
* Understand how to coordinate submittals, deliveries, etc. that affect the project schedule with the Superintendent.
* Monitor/review weekly and monthly status reports and weekly subcontractor meeting minutes, change orders, etc. to understand process.
* Understand change documents and change proposal requests for price review.
* May go with Project Engineer to meetings with architect and owner representatives to understand information required by owner, necessary progress reports and summaries, and how action plans from owner/architect meetings address all outstanding issues related to the project.
* Learn how changes, clarifications, directives, RFIs, etc. are updated on "as-built" plans and coordinated with company supervision and subcontractors/suppliers.
* Learn how to maintain RFI logs and change request log.
Minimum Requirements
* Currently enrolled in a Construction Management, Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering program.
Preferred Requirements
* Prior commercial construction internships or work experience, very helpful, but not required.
* Able to develop new skills and knowledge quickly.
* Participate in training, seminars, task team meetings, etc.
* Demonstrate expanding knowledge of construction details about miscellaneous metals, casework, doors, specialties, radiation protection, etc.
* Strong computer skills including the ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
* Possess good self-organizational and management skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Job Responsibilities:
Assisting a Fulltime Mechanical Engineer to provide mechanical engineering expertise in the area of mechanical design, hydraulics, drivetrains, motors, simulation analysis, or engineering testing procedures. Assist in the design and development of innovative forklifts and material handling equipment focusing on one of the following:
* Mechanical Design - Create layouts of proposed design ensuring that designs are functional, safe, reliable, serviceable, manufacturable, cost effective and esthetically and ergonomically correct. Select appropriate materials, organize bill of materials data and approve detail drawings.

* Testing Procedures - Identify the commonly-used concepts, methods, and procedures for the detailed development and analysis of experimental and standardized tests for new and modified products or components. Devise and apply validation procedures for components and systems under development. Evaluate new components and technologies.
Job Qualifications:
* Candidate should be pursuing a Bachelors degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering
