Responsibilities:
Perform a broad range of clinical laboratory tests and analyses in areas such as hematology, chemistry, immunology, and microbiology.
Operate and calibrate laboratory instruments with precision and care.
Ensure accuracy of results by adhering to quality control, safety protocols, and all regulatory standards (CAP, CLIA, etc.).
Maintain detailed documentation of procedures and patient test data.
Communicate critical findings promptly to physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams.

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
- Perform only those tests authorized by the Technical Director
- Follow the clinical laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
- Participate in and maintain records that demonstrate proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
- Adhere to the clinical laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities and ensure instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance is performed in accordance with the laboratory's approved policies and procedures
- Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the defined acceptable levels of performance
- Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify a supervisor, manager or director
- Document all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
- Exercise professional judgment in evaluation, specimen integrity, results accuracy and inter-result validity and take corrective action as necessary. Such corrective action can include, but is not limited to: specimen rejection, recollection and/or retesting using the same or alternate methods and/or utilizing other skills to ensure validity and accuracy of testing at all times
- Perform specialized lab testing for cellular therapies and lab testing for the quality control of cellular therapy products and blood components
- Perform specialized lab testing for RBC and HPA genotyping including Next Generation Sequencing.
- Perform Platelet Refractory Workups including HLA typing, and HLA/HPA antibody identification. Perform DNA extractions.

The Supervisory Medical Laboratory Technician at this level has full supervisory responsibility for the Phlebotomy section which includes outpatient and inpatient services at one of the following sites: Malcom Randall VA Medical Center/Primary Care Clinic, Lake City VA Medical Center/Commerce CBOC, Tallahassee OPC, or The Villages Outpatient Clinic with between 5 to 25 subordinate Phlebotomists.
* Assigns staff to achieve optimum patient care and timely delivery of specimens.
* Ensures the work assignments of employees in the team are carried out.
* Assigns functions to team members in order to meet routine and unusual deadlines and priorities.
* Functions as a primary training coordinator for students and new employees who require education and instruction in phlebotomy techniques, safety procedures, specimen handling, and urine drug screen collection.
* Performs competency assessments of assigned personnel and provides documentation of training activities to meet agency accrediting requirements for The Joint Commission, Food and Drug Administration, American Association of Blood Banks and Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
* Utilizes outpatient laboratory workflow system to determine patient waiting times and adjusts staffing as needed to meet or exceed goals for patient waiting times.
* In case of shortage of personnel due to scheduled or unscheduled leave, the incumbent will be responsible for filling in and for distributing the workload to other team members to ensure smooth workflow.
* Ensures required training such as cardiac resuscitation and Fit Testing is up to date on the employees in their area. Collects and collates data for the Quality Assurance Meeting.
* Prepares schedules and monitors attendance of employees. Coordinates leave requests to ensure maximum coverage.
* Assures formal orientation and training programs are developed and carried out as required. Provide ongoing assessment and development of staff to promote maximum levels of professional achievement and advancement.
* Participates in the interviewing and selection of personnel as required. Provides opportunities for staff development through in-service programs, patient teaching and staff projects in collaboration with Quality Manager.
* Will serve as Records Liaison Officer for the phlebotomy section.
* Maintains current knowledge and answers questions of other employees about procedures, policies and directives. Writes/revises Standard Operating Procedures.
* Resolves formal and informal complaints of employees and patients through Joint Patient Safety Reporting and PATS-R sites.
* Incumbent follows proper infectious disease controls by following standard precaution procedures and using correct Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure that others utilize appropriate PPE for their tasks. The incumbent follows established safety policies and attends mandatory safety training. The incumbent maintains a clean and safe work environment.
* Perform additional medical administrative duties such as participate in special projects or analytical studies of problem areas, conduct investigations and/or systemic reviews of operations, makes recommendations or suggestions for improved methods and procedures, coordinates, implements and completes accepted changes. Drafts policy for clinic operation. Investigates issues and prepares correspondence relating to patient care activities. Accomplishes assigned task on or before the specified deadline.

* Identifies and documents instrument malfunctions and/or unacceptable test system performance by analyzing and interpreting instrument function checks, calibration data, and quality control data.
* Investigates problems/incompatibilities to determine the appropriate solution when departure from normal operating procedures is required in conjunction with more experienced staff as needed.
* Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control/assurance reports.
* Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system.
* Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member, even under difficult conditions, fostering a professional, courteous, and effective manner of communication appropriate to the situation, escalate as needed.
* Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and specific factors, which influence test results.
Work Schedule: Available Shifts
Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 3:30 pm-
with rotating weekends and holidays. And /Or Weekends and holidays tour of duty: 06:30am - 3:00pm.
