The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post- bachelor's certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology. OR 3. A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. This combination of education and experience must have provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of medical technology equivalent to that provided by the full 4-year course of study described in A or B above. All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university. Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. Certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) obtained through written examination by a nationally recognized credentialing agency or State licensing body is a good indication that the quality of experience is acceptable. AND Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing, maintaining instruments, and monitoring quality control; all of which is performed in a clinical laboratory. The Opportunity Responsible for greeting donors at the plasma collection center and conducting a series of registration procedures to verify donor suitability for the plasma pheresis process. You will report to the Assistant Center Manager. The Role In compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), assists qualified donors in completing the screening process. The screening procedures includes but are not limited to: assessing the self-administered health history, answering basic medical questions associated with the donation process, referring donors to medical staff when appropriate and performing health screening procedures such as blood pressure, pulse, weight, temperature. Performs finger stick to obtain sample to obtain donor's hematocrit and total protein levels. Upon completion of the appropriate training, may educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma. This includes explaining the screening process, the health screening tests performed, the appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and any other information pertinent to the donor. Ensure that all donor questions are answered timely, accurately and professionally. May be involved in registering applicant and transfer donors based upon completion of appropriate training and operational needs of the center. May answer the telephone and answer callers question or transfer call to appropriate staff member. Maintaining training files for staff members; and for training and competency evaluation of the Blood Bank staff. Coordinating and working at the bench with technical staff on a day-to-day basis. Ensuring that technical procedures are performed according to the SOP under the highest standards of quality promptly. Review of Antibody Identification Workups, Transfusion Reaction Workups, ABO Discrepancy Workups, and result exception reports. Ensures the correct performance of tests in the assigned section, supervising staff performing these tests. Ensures that staff have been trained in procedures, including completion of technical training checklists. Reviews the performance of tests in the assigned section including review of daily test performance and reports as needed. Initiates corrective action as needed and performs any necessary follow-up. Communicates the results of these reviews as needed to the Administrative Director, Medical Director or other as appropriate. Ensures that technical procedures are written following established guidelines. Reviews procedures according to relevant regulatory guidelines. Establishes and monitors section quality control procedures following regulatory guidelines, initiating any corrective action needed and ensuring that documentation is complete. Reviews QC charts, reports, proficiency testing, etc. and reports this information as needed, maintaining documentation of these for further review and for regulatory inspection. Participates in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of Nemours . Ensures that staff participate in appropriate continuing education programs, especially those designed to enhance knowledge appropriate to job performance. Schedules section employees, ensuring appropriate section coverage, reviewing schedules with others (e.g., shift supervisor, laboratory administration) as needed to ensure that laboratory services are not interrupted. In scheduling, avoids overtime where possible. Rotates section employees to increase staffing flexibility and to maintain staff competency on appropriate section “benches” as needed. Evaluates staff time-off requests in a fair manner, which ensures appropriate staffing levels. Selects, implements and maintains technical equipment for section, writing justification for capital equipment, and evaluating cost-benefit of various alternatives and makes recommendations to laboratory administration. Maintains knowledge of section technical requirements, especially regulatory requirements. Maintains laboratory section's readiness for inspections. Informs laboratory administration of compliance problems and makes plans to correct such failures and carries out these plans as appropriate. Participates in section's inspections, reviewing deficiencies and correcting as needed or assigned. Maintains section supply inventory at appropriate levels. Reviews problems related to supplies. Follows all laboratory and hospital safety policies (including, but not limited to chemical safety, e.g., the laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Plan, infection control policies, etc.) and reviews safety issues as needed. Must be able to perform functions using personal protective equipment and barrier protection, such as disposable gloves, laboratory coats, shields, goggles, etc. Must be able to handle a variety of hazardous materials, such as chemicals and pathogenic organisms. Handles hazardous materials using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); ensures hazardous waste is accurately labeled, stored and maintained in appropriate type of sealed container, when readied for removal from department. Assists with maintaining appropriate documentation. Ensures that staff adhere to safety procedures and that staff receive training or retraining as needed or required. Nemours Children's Health is seeking a Laboratory Assistant (Part-Time), to join our team in Wilmington, Delaware. Schedule: M-F, 6:00am-2:30pm, 8-hour shifts. Weekend and holiday coverage may be required. Perform duties associated with incoming/outgoing department communications as well as processing inpatient, E.R., outpatient specimens, and reference lab requests. Assists tech staff, pathologists, and Director of Laboratory in various tasks. Possess thorough knowledge of laboratory specimen collection and processing procedures, shipping, TATs, and specialty testing. Performs any of following tasks to prepare specimens for laboratory testing. Receives incoming specimens and requisition forms, inspects items for completeness, correctness of information, and condition of specimens. Pours specimen fluid from primary tube into test tubes to create the required number of test samples. Enters required patient and customer data, testing codes, and billing information into computer system, using computer keyboard or bar code reading equipment. Prints bar code labels, using bar code printer, and attaches bar code labels to samples and requisition forms. Centrifuges or performs other tasks to prepare specimens for testing. Distributes all specimens to appropriate department for laboratory testing and assists with the locating of specimens for “add-on” testing. Completes requisition forms and packages and forwards specimens to outside laboratories for tests unavailable on site.
