Responsibilities
* Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic exam
* Perform technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens
* Section the embedded tissue, using a microtome and mount the section properly on a microscope slide
* Perform various immunohistochemical tests on formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections
* Process mounted sections through routine and special staining procedures
* Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens
* Prepare the stains and reagents needed for special procedures
* Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
* Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments
* Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed
* Record equipment log data in an accurate and timely manner
* Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
* Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies
* Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, analysis and reporting
* Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions when needed
Requirements
* High school diploma or equivalent is required
* Associate's Degree is preferred
* ASCP Histology certification Preferred
* Ability to meet CLIA requirements
* Experience with routine histology procedures and equipment
* Immunohistochemistry experience is a plus
* Comfortability embedding both large and small specimens

Immunology / Serology:

What You'll Need to Succeed:
You are able to work the overnight shift
You will start training in the Parasitology Department, but you will be expected to cross train in other departments
You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred.
It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) orMedical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus.
You will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).

Have earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, ormedical technology from an accredited institution.

Have education and training equivalent to an associate degree that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either:
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
24 semester hours of science courses that include: six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology; and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, ormedical laboratory technology in any combination.
AND
Have laboratory training that includes either of the following:

At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as a Public Health Laboratory Technician performing high complexity sample analysis in accordance with the current environmental/biological scope and/or accredited under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP).
Perform high complexity tests that are authorized by the Clinical Laboratory Senior Scientist.
Complete demonstrations of capabilities as dictated by the laboratory.
Shall follow all laboratory policies and Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs).
As outline in 42 CFR 493, the testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.
Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
Each individual performing high complexity testing must:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

REQUIRED SKILLS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The Public Health Clinical Laboratory Technicians must qualify under one of the following options:
Be a Doctor of Medicine, doctor of osteopathy, or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine, osteopathy, or podiatry in the State in which the laboratory is located.
Have earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, ormedical technology from an accredited institution.
Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, ormedical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Have education and training equivalent to an associate degree that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either:
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
24 semester hours of science courses that include: six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology; and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, ormedical laboratory technology in any combination.
AND
Have laboratory training that includes either of the following:
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS; or
At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

Community Hematology Oncology provides comprehensive medical care in a community setting for adults coping with a diagnosis of cancer or serious blood disorders. The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) provides technical support in the OHSU Community Oncology Laboratory to complete laboratory testing for clinic patients. The MLS performs Hematology, Chemistry and Urinalysis testing. The position requires monitoring and interpretation of all quality control systems. The incumbent is responsible for both routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Community Hematology Oncology provides appropriate age care to the age groups that are indicated.
Function/Duties of Position
Instrument Processing:
Performs testing in all sections of OHSU Community Oncology Laboratory with accuracy, speed and efficiency using Sysmex XN 1000, Beckman Coulter AU 480, Beckman Coulter Access, Abbott Piccolo Express, Microscope. Follows all written procedures, policies, and guidelines.
Sample Preparation:
Prepares patient samples for testing. Determines acceptability of specimens and results. Repeats specimen testing as necessary to ensure accuracy. Reports results via computer and phone.
Result Validtion:
Ensures all patient data, both internal and send out testing, is received and documented in the patient Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Recognizes Critical Value results and immediately responds by notifying the appropriate provider.
Instrument Maintence:
Calibrates and performs routine maintenance on analytic analyzers. Uses problem solving skills to troubleshoot when indicated by patient or quality control results.
Computer Skills:
Performs required work using computer programs: EPIC, Word, Excel, Portal, E-chart, and basic navigation of Community Hematology Oncology computer files.
Quailty Control:
Performs all quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) tasks. This includes, but is not limited to daily analyzer controls, instrument function checks, Proficiency Testing, documentation of QA issues involving both patients and/or instrument problems. Reports all QC and/or QA problems to the Laboratory Manager in a timely manner.
Inventory/ Supplies:
Maintains adequate laboratory supplies by performing regular stock inventories and processing supply orders as needed. Maintains a clean environment within the laboratory.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science orMedical Laboratory Science which includes a clinical lab externship, and current certification as MT (ASCP), or MLS (ASCP) within 90 days of hire. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR
Completion of a 2 year accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, plus MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 90 days of hire, and 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR
Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological field, and four years experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical laboratory performing testing and related tasks. The Knight Cardiovascular Institute Research Assistant II (Lab Technician) is responsible for various duties related to sample processing and laboratory maintenance for both investigator initiated and sponsored clinical trials. They will maintain inventory, cleanliness, equipment ordering, sample processing, and participating in ongoing benchtop research and data collection. The RA2 assists with purchasing of equipment and supplies and communicating with scientific and clinical staff.
This position also contributes to written reports, abstracts, project proposals and grants, and presentations. This position will primarily support our Cardiomyopathy research team within the division of Cardiology, however the lab they will maintain serves the entire clinical trials unit and they will have overlap with all sections within the Cardiovascular Medicine Clinical Trials Unit and Knight Cardiovascular Institute. This is an onsite role.
Function/Duties of Position
1. Always promotes the mission of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute through our Professional Standards of timely Customer Service, Reliability, Productivity, Professionalism, Accuracy, Timeliness, Integrity, and Problem-Solving.
2. Responsible for the lifecycle of bio samples while in the CTU from collection to shipping.This includes but is not limited to:
* Works in collaboration with study coordinator to maintain and file regulatory and study documents of all samples collected for various studies.
* Keeps detailed accounting records of all samples processed, shipped, and stored.
* Creates and maintains a database of all bio samples in cryostorage.
* Processes samples after collection and prepares for shipping.
* Prepare, finalize, and deliver all packages for shipment at days end.
* Maintaining laboratory reporting and signature requests from the PI .
3. Benchtop research for investigator initiated clinical trials, including but not limited to:
* Perform various molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA/library preparation, PCR, Sanger sequencing, and other assays as deemed necessary.

* Preparation of reagent solutions needed for molecular research.
* sample processing including DNA, RNA and protein.
* Monitor and maintain consistent laboratory day-to-day operations, assist with purchases of equipment and supplies, and oversee maintenance of equipment.
4. General Laboratory:
* Perform general lab upkeep and record keeping as necessary.
* Provide support to stocking laboratory.
* Provide support in laboratory cleaning and decontamination.
* Provide support and training to new clinical trials staff who are familiarizing themselves with sample processing.
5. Data Collection/Data Analysis/Record Keeping:
* Collect scientific data pertinent to research projects, keep records of information (which may include database searches).
* Maintain integrity of all databases, including sponsor EDC as required.
6. Report Preparation and Literature Research:
* Prepare reports containing analytical, descriptive, and evaluative content that will be submitted for publication, grant applications, progress reports, presentations at national and international meetings, etc.
* Assist the Clinical Trial Managers, coordinators, or Principle Investigator with other research related projects and administrative/office related duties as needed.
* Assist manager and coordinator as needed in supporting sponsor visits (i.e. proctoring visits, monitoring, site initiation, etc.)

Location: Marquam Hill & South Waterfront CampusSchedule: Monday - Friday, 6am - 6pm primary business hours with variability depending on clinical schedules with occasional evenings & weekend work to meet project deadlines/goals. As a salaried employee research assistant is expected to flex their time in conjunction with OHSU policy; this may mean working more than 40 hours in a week and then less another.
Must be able to travel to all KCVI worksite locations, including potentially using the tram numerous times each day. Will work with human biological samples, including samples which may contain infectious disease. Research assistant Coordinator may be expected to travel to conferences, new study meetings.
