What you will do
Performs an electrocardiogram (EKG) on patients' to get a recording of the heart's electrical activity through repeated cardiac cycles and notify the physician if something appears wrong.
Explain testing procedures to patient to obtain cooperation and reduce anxiety.
Observes the recording of cardiac cycles to get an acceptable tracing for the provider to review and interpret.
Monitor patients' comfort and safety during tests, alerting physicians to abnormalities or changes in patient responses.
Obtain patient identification prior to performing the EKG.
Attach electrodes to the patients' chests, arms, and legs, connect electrodes to leads from the electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, and operate the EKG machine to obtain a reading.
Adjust equipment and controls according to physicians' orders or established protocol,(adult, pediatric, transverse, posterior or rhythm strip)
Prepare and position patients for testing.
Check, test, and maintain EKG equipment, making minor repairs when necessary, to ensure proper operation.
Supervise and train other EKG technologists and possibly respiratory and nursing students or nursing staff.
