North Iowa Area Community College company history timeline

1918

Starting in 1918 as Mason City Junior College, NIACC has the distinct privilege of being the oldest Iowa community college.

1918 MCJC was accredited by North Central association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

1919

1919 The first MCJC athletic teams start with city basketball and baseball teams.

1920

1920 First five students graduated from MCJC.

1921

1921 The first organized football game between MCJC and Waldorf College was played, launching a decades-long rivalry between the two schools.

1925

1925 After a 26-0 win over Wartburg College, MCJC is called the Trojans for the first time.

1926

1926-27 The men’s basketball team won the newly-formed Iowa Junior College Conference with a record of 7-0.

1929

1929 S.L. Rugland becomes new dean of Mason City Junior College.

1940

1940 MCJC cooperated with the federal defense program by offering the Civilian Pilot Training course.

1943

1943 College Dean S. L. Rugland serves his country as a Field Director with the American Red Cross in Europe.

1946

1946 Returning GI’s enrolled in MCJC make up one-fourth of the total enrollment.

1947

1947 Clifford Beem becomes dean.

1947 First adult education class offering credit to teachers for certificate renewal.

1955

1955 MCJC moves from the high school building to the Memorial University Building.

1965

1965-66 In the last year as MCJC, enrollment is 1,390 students.

1966

MCJC is to become North Iowa Area Community College at the start of the 1966-67 school year and serve the nine counties in Merged Area II.

1966-67 Mason City Junior College becomes North Iowa Area Community College with an enrollment of 1,802 students.

1968

1968 50th Anniversary of MCJC/NIACC.

1970

1970 David Pierce becomes new president of NIACC in the same year the college begins to move to its current 300-acre site on the east edge of Mason City.

1972

1972 All NIACC students attend classes on a single campus.

1973

1973 NIACC wrestling team wins national title under the direction of coach Kaye Young.

1976

1976 The Music Department presents the first annual Quodlibet.

1977

1977 The Beem Center for Learning, named after Clifford Beem, opens.

1979

1979 The North Iowa Community Auditorium opens its doors.

1981

1981 David Buettner becomes president after David Pierce resigns to serve as chancellor for the Illinois Community College system.

1982

1982 The Administration Building, now named after David Pierce, opens.

1984

1984 Buena Vista College-Mason City Center finds a home at NIACC.

1990

1990 Football team goes to the RC Cola Bowl.

1991

1991 First student apartment added to NIACC Dormitories.

1991 Football team participates in RC Cola Bowl for second consecutive year.

1993

1993 75th anniversary Homecoming float

1995

1995 NIACC First promotional campaign becomes popular.

1996

1996 NIACC becomes entrepreneurial resource with gift from John and Mary Pappajohn.

2001

2001 Mike Morrison becomes president after David Buettner moves to Fox Valley Technical College in Wisconsin.

2002

2002 Soccer field created on campus.

2008

2008 Deb Derr takes over presidency from Mike Morrison, who retires.

2012

Since 2012, the College has received numerous national rankings, including being ranked in the top 10 percent of all community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute.

2013

2013 Steve Schulz becomes president after Deb Derr takes top job at Mount Hood Community College in Oregon.

2014

2014 Campus View Housing, a state-of-the-art dormitory complex on the NIACC campus, opens.

2017

Had 15-game hitting streak: 16, Morgan Thesing-Ritter (Feb, 16 to March 18, 2017)

2018

In 2018, the College celebrated its 100 year anniversary of providing high quality, community-responsive education to our students.

2018 STEM Center opens.

2019
