Northeast Community College company history timeline

1920

Though the founding of this institution reaches back into the 1920's, here are some interesting events and milestones in the history of Northeast Community College as an institution to date.

1928

Norfolk Junior College was established as part of the Norfolk Public School System in September 1928.

1965

In August 1965, the Nebraska Legislature adopted legislation that would allow voters in counties surrounding Norfolk to create a 14-county technical college region and Northeast Nebraska Vocational Technical School.

1968

Nearly 40 years later, in July 1968, Norfolk Junior College separated from the public school system and became known as Northeastern Nebraska College the following February.

1971

Northeast Nebraska Technical College (NNTC) opened its doors at 801 East Benjamin Avenue in June 1971.

1972

In November 1972, Northeast's region was expanded to the 20 counties of northeast Nebraska.

1973

Northeastern Nebraska College and Northeast Nebraska Technical College merged July 1, 1973.

In 1973, Northeast's campus consisted of four new buildings on the northeast edge of Norfolk and several older buildings located in the downtown area.

1975

The name of the College was changed to Northeast Technical Community College (NTCC) in July 1975.

1977

The NTCC campus was annexed to the City of Norfolk in April 1977.

When it opened in the second semester of the 1977-78 year, the 16,000-square-foot building featured new classrooms, laboratories and a greenhouse.

1983

During the fall of 1983 a group of citizens in Camp, Morris, and Titus counties formed a steering committee to establish a community college district.

1984

In January 1984 a proposition to establish a community college district and to authorize the issuance of $10,000,000 in bonds was passed.

A College President was selected in May of 1984 and construction began in November.

Students had a new place to gather on campus when the Student Center opened in 1984.

1985

In August 1985, Northeast Texas Community College started classes on schedule in the recently completed buildings.

In 1985, Northeast Technical Community College purchased 533 acres of farmland from the State of Nebraska for use in the College’s Agriculture Programs.

1987

Gill began her career in higher education in 1987 in the student service field.

1991

In compliance with state legislation adopted in August 1991, the name was officially changed to Northeast Community College.

The Jim and Elizabeth Whatley Center for the Performing Arts, completed in the fall of 1991, features a theatre with a modern instructional stage and seating for 570.

1992

She has also been employed by Arizona State University, Boise State University, University of Wyoming, and Valparaiso University since first entering higher education in 1992.

1997

Northeast Community College experiences a record growth enrollment in fiscal year 1997 with 7,278 credit students, an increase of 515 students over the previous fiscal year.

2001

Doctor Bill Path returned to campus in 2001 to succeed Doctor James Underwood, who retired.

2002

In 2002, the College was named one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the nation by the National Center for Educational Statistics.

2005

A new 10,000-square-foot education center in the Westside Technology Park in South Sioux City opened for Fall Semester 2005.

2006

Plans began in 2006 to expand Northeast Community College class offerings in West Point.

2008

The West Point extended campus, located in the Nielsen Community Center and made possible by a capital campaign project in the region, opened in 2008.

2010

Lindsay has worked at Northeast Community College since February of 2010 in various roles and most recently as the director of institutional effectiveness.

2013

Kruse leads a division that has raised over $35 million for college programs, scholarships, and facilities since joining the team in 2013.

“He called a small group of former employees together with his thoughts shortly after the college celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013.

2016

Northeast's Service Center is recognized with the Association of College and University Technology Advancement's 2016 Award of Institutional Excellence in Information Technology.

2017

The “Hawk Sculpture Campus Tradition” was presented the 2017 National Service Project of the Year Award from the Association of the Promotion of Campus Activities.

2021

The Student Awards Celebration recognized students for academic and athletic achievements during the 2021-22 year.

2022
