Reality Labs at Meta is seeking Research Scientists with experience in product-focused machine learning and signal processing research to advance our pioneering work in neuromotor interfaces, which has grown out of the acquisition of CTRL-labs. We're building a practical interface drawing on the rich neuromotor signals that can be measured non-invasively via surface electromyography (EMG) with single motor neuron resolution. The postdoc will develop a rich agent-based model of eco-evolutionary dynamics. The model will be written in C++, and will have the following properties: 1) stoichiometry, 2) lower-level particles that self assemble into higher-level agents, and 3) the capacity for interactions between the lower level particles, such that they can be modeled as an ecological community. The postdoc will use this model to test hypotheses about the conditions that support the emergence of Darwinian evolution. Specifically, they will use information theoretic techniques to determine under what circumstances collections of particles that are best understood as individuals arise. Using a simpler model, we have already identified hypotheses about which patterns of ecological interactions among lower-level particles support the emergence of a higher level individual. The postdoc will test these hypotheses in the more complex system, and seek to further refine them. Because the new model will have both stoichiometry and ecological interactions, it will be comparable to prior work on ecological modeling and to prior work on chemical reaction networks. We will use the model as a bridge between these systems, enabling us to identify properties that a chemical reaction network would need in order to exhibit a major evolutionary transition in individuality. These hypotheses will then be tested by our wet lab collaborators. The postdoc will be responsible for coding, running in silico experiments, developing necessary mathematical formalisms, writing papers on our findings, and giving talks. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. * Perform "waived," non-patient testing, & quality control testing, as directed; * Assist with media/reagent preparation; * Assist with study documentation, testing, quality control & record keeping; * Properly prepare specimens for testing by centrifuging, aliquoting, & labelling, adhering to published procedures & guidelines; * Receive & sort specimens, including blood, bodily fluid, & tissue; * Evaluate specimens for correct identification & suitability for testing; * Use complex scientific instruments to process specimens, adhering to published procedures & guidelines; * Identify and correct problems and/or errors with submitted specimens, orders, and processing on scientific instruments; * Follow established best practices to ensure that Patients, orders, & specimens are always identified & labelled correctly; * Prioritize work based on Patient type & sample priority; * Prepare specimens for transport & storage, deliver appropriate specimens to designated laboratory section for testing; * Use a computer to verify sample collection information, retrieve patient test data, & enter data; * Track specimens & work pending lists to identify incomplete tests & problems; * Resolve problems by taking appropriate actions as dictated by the circumstances; * Communicate effectively, & in accordance with the ICARE values, in-person, via the telephone, & via email; * Provide instruction in laboratory technique, instrumentation, & application of laboratory test procedures to new Caregivers, students, fellows, residents & clients; * Assist in training new Caregivers; * Maintain inventory, replenish stock & supplies; * Perform technical, clerical, & service duties as assigned, including (but not limited to: equipment cleaning & maintenance, emptying trash, washing dishes, taking & recording temperatures, filing & retrieving specimens, handling biohazard & chemical waste); * Follow instructions given by Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Pathologists, & Leaders. Job Requirements General Requirements • N/A Work Experience • Experience in a clinical laboratory preferred. Education • High school diploma or GED • Completed two college level science courses or 1 year of laboratory experience. • Recent completion of a course in Medical Terminology or completion within 60 days following employment. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Ability to read, follow directions, & perform procedures associated with specimen collection, handling & processing. • Ability to recognize problems & take corrective actions. • Ability to communicate effectively & professionally both in person & via the telephone. • Ability to work well under pressure & to handle crisis situations. • Ability to function as part of a team dedicated to Patient care. • Ability to use a keyboard as required to perform the essential duties of the job. • Ability to follow instructions.
