Internship Overview
This residency internship is for candidates who want an immersive environment near Princeton, IL: experience agricultural operations on-site while producing real research work in quantitative strategies and market analytics. The internship is unpaid, but housing and a living stipend are provided.
What You'll Do (Trader Support & Research Ops)
1. Support traders by validating ideas: translate hypotheses into testable questions, define metrics, run controlled experiments, and summarize results.

8. Translate observations into market-relevant research angles (e.g., “what might matter for pricing behavior and why”).
Requirements (Must-have)
Python (pandas/numpy), basic visualization; comfort with CSV/Excel. SQL/Git are a plus.
Strong quantitative foundation (math/stats/econ/finance/engineering/CS or equivalent majors). Master's degree required; PhD strongly preferred (or PhD candidate with demonstrated research capability).

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DETAILS:
The Chicago Fed's Research Department sponsors a summer internship program for Ph.D. students to enable participants to conduct research, present results, and engage with experienced economists.
The Research Department seeks qualified candidates for summer 2026 internship positions. Ph.D. students in macroeconomics, applied microeconomics, or financial economics who are actively working on their dissertation are encouraged to apply.
The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to advance their research project and participate in the intellectual life of the Department. Interns will be mentored by experienced economists on their research as well as on a variety of potential career concerns. They will also have the opportunity to present their work in our seminar series and interact with staff and visiting economists.
Interns are hosted for up to twelve weeks, beginning the 2nd week of June, and receive compensation during the program. Interns are expected to report in person, full time.
Please note that all program participants must be authorized to legally work in the United States. Applicants who are not currently authorized to work in the United States must make arrangements independently to obtain the necessary work permissions to be able to participate in the program. In 2014, our team developed a compact proton linear accelerator (linac) design for an accelerator-driven system (ADS) aimed at nuclear waste transmutation, based on state-of-the-art niobium superconducting RF (SRF) technology. Since then, a transformative SRF approach using Nb₃Sn has emerged, offering performance comparable to niobium while enabling operation at higher temperatures-potentially reducing operating costs for future linac-based accelerator facilities.
Under a newly approved project, we will redesign the original ADS driver linac to leverage Nb₃Sn SRF technology.
Key responsibilities include:
+ Leading the physics design of a next-generation proton linac, optimizing acceleration efficiency and transverse focusing
+ Designing new SRF accelerating cavity types across multiple operating frequencies
+ Conducting end-to-end beam dynamics studies at full beam energy and current, including comprehensive error analyses using large-scale beam simulations
+ Evaluating linac failure scenarios, defining tolerable failure modes, and developing strategies and procedures for rapid recovery with realistic recovery-time targets

As part of the Conservation Research Department, the intern will work closely with the Wetland Biologist to document the wildlife that use these habitats and monitor species abundances in response to restoration efforts; special focus is given to amphibians, aquatic insects, and reptiles. These efforts will help us understand how restoring temporary wetlands can benefit animals. This research will help inform management strategies to best protect wetlands
Wetlands are biodiversity hotspots and their protection is critical to support diverse wildlife. Shedd Aquarium is working with community volunteers and local partners to restore and monitor wetlands across Cook County. This restoration work falls under Shedd's Conservation Priority Area to Revitalize Habitat.
Environment:
Interns will work directly with Melissa Youngquist at Shedd and at field sites around the greater Chicago area. At Shedd, interns will work in the Conservation Research Laboratory and the technician office. Work will primarily be sedentary at a desk, using microscopes and computers. The role requires sitting for extended periods of time and proper ergonomic set up is required to protect from back, neck, and eye strain.
In the field, interns will walk, off-trail ,through wooded, prairie, and wetlands habitats. Environmental conditions depend on the weather and may be cold, hot, rainy, humid, or very pleasant. The intern will be exposed to plants, mud, biting insects, and other wild animals (amphibians, reptiles, fishes, etc). The intern must by physically able to carry 30 lbs of gear for 5 miles in all weather conditions.
Learning Goals:
Gain skill in field and laboratory procedures to collect data on community composition
Demonstrate understanding of how to conduct scientific research: study design, data collection and analysis, and presentation of results
Gain working knowledge of restoration and wetland ecology in Chicago

Responsibilities & Projects:

Set out/monitor audio loggers, document amphibian breeding activity, and sample tadpoles in wetlands
Document roadkill near wetlands
Surveying snakes in a restored wetland/prairie complex
Assist with laboratory work
Laboratory work will include use of a dissecting microscope to sort, identify, and count macroinvertebrates samples
Assist with data entry
Enter data from datasheets into Excel
Processing frog-call recordings

This internship will run from 3/16/26-6/5/26.
The first day of the internship will be a full day orientation from 9am-5pm. This is required, even if you will not normally be scheduled on Mondays.
We anticipate this position will be scheduled for 30 hours per week during this time period, pending business needs and individual performance.
Preferred schedule: Availability flexible Monday-Thursday between 9am and 5pm.
Set schedule based on intern availability and host department needs.
