Diagnoses and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on mobile and stationary equipment. Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on mobile machinery to reduce downtime.     Captain, M/V Ptarmigan Reports To: Portage Glacier Cruise Manager The Captain of the M/V Ptarmigan is responsible for the safe and compliant operation of the vessel on Portage Lake in accordance with the United States Forest Service (USFS) contract, United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations, and company standards. This role delivers exceptional guest service through professional vessel operation, narration, crew leadership, safety compliance, and coordination with engineering and shoreside teams. The Captain oversees vessel crew, ensures operational readiness, and supports all aspects of the daily cruise experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Vessel Operations & Compliance Operate the M/V Ptarmigan in full compliance with the USFS contract and all USCG regulations. Incorporate the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) security plan into daily operations. Provide guest narration when USFS interpretive services are not available. Conduct required USCG drills, safety exercises, and maintain all associated records. Ensure strict adherence to all safety, environmental, and reporting requirements. Crew Leadership & Guest Experience Provide strong leadership by setting goals, priorities, and expectations for crew and support staff. Supervise the Boat Supervisor and Deckhands. Interview, hire, train, and evaluate seasonal staff. Ensure all retail accounting and ticket sales are reconciled and submitted daily. Maintenance & Operational Support Partner with the Engineer to diagnose, troubleshoot, and support repairs of vessel systems. Coordinate daily start-up and shutdown of vessel and facility operations. Assist with basic mechanical, electrical, and safety-related tasks as needed. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. Ability to perform all USCG-required safety and emergency duties. Work is performed in a marine environment with variable weather conditions. Ability to work long hours while maintaining a professional, calm, and positive presence. Qualifications Required High School diploma or equivalent. Valid USCG 100-Ton Inland Master license (minimum). Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid drivers license with clean driving record (MVR required). Ability to work legally in the United States.
